“VERY WELCOMING”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

We have been here several times before and always look forward to our return. This time we stayed two nights and the area has plenty to offer for an even longer stay. There was nice note of welcome in our large room which looked out on a prettily landscaped slope in the quiet back. This is a busy hotel, obviously appreciated by locals as well as tourists. The Restaurant serves very good tasty food, and a great breakfast. The Bar has a great selection of beers/ales and single malts and there is a front garden, across the road, looking out on the harbour where one can enjoy the picturesque view with a coffee or a drink.

We've stayed a few times before but were really disappointed this time around. Staff are very friendly and breakfasts are great. Rooms are average in general but the location makes up for that. However the food was really poor (ie dinner). It's not cheap and was just not value for money and definitely had gone down massively downhill which is a shame. The haggis starter was just a pile of haggis and the "fresh" mackerel main course in citrus glaze was terrible - it was clearly not fresh (have caught fresh mackerel myself and it neither looks or tastes like that). Very poor dinner. In addition - don't stay in the annex room 14! We were woken both mornings at 6am and 5.40am because the people in the room above had got up. They were not particularly loud but the floorboards make a horrendous noise and impossible to sleep through. The sound proofing ( or lack of it ) means you can hear every word so basically if the room above you is awake - so are you! I mentioned this on checking out but got no interest and was actually told they had never had any complaints before which I cannot believe. I was pretty havked off that they didnt seem to care whether we had an enjoyable stay or not. i think tjis says it all - captive market so standards dont really need to be maintained. If we are stuck we would stay again for B and B only ) though we would try all other accommodation first!). but we would never eat there again and would avoid the noisy room. Recommend Plockton inn and even more so the Shore (which is fabulous) - avoid Plockton hotel for dinner at all costs!

Stayed two nights while travelling around Scotland.

The dilemma for choosing a room is between a view over the harbour (with the potential for noise from the street) or a quiet garden room at the back with little to see. We were in a garden room on the first floor; a door leads onto the garden which extends steeply behind the property. No scope for a sitting area (too steep) but very pleasant to be able to step outside the bedroom for some fresh air...ideal for smokers, I suspect. Room was a good size, pleasant but no "wow" factor. En suite bathroom was not well lit but a powerful shower and large bath.

Service in the restaurant was excellent after a initial hiccough on the first evening, when we waited 10-15 mins for our order to be taken; the manager apologised and we were not lacking for attention for the rest of the evening. It is a very popular venue, with would-be diners without a reservation being turned away. (Incidentally, a table is always held for residents, although they do request that you inform them, if you are eating elsewhere.)

Another reviewer has commented on the "soulless" atmosphere in the dining room - the ambience (or lack of it) is the hotel's weak point but there is a good atmosphere in the bar. I can't say it spoiled our meal - we dined there the second night on the strength of the quality of our first meal and were not disappointed. A good, varied menu. After the false start, the service was also of a high standard. Worth at least another visit.

TIP: not to be confused with the nearby "Plockton Inn".

Myself and a group of friends recently visited the Plockton Hotel for a few drinks and decided to stay for dinner. Noticing that every table seemed to be reserved, we still asked and a very helpful chap, Christian, managed to find a way to accomodate us. The food was excellent with decent sized servings and at a very reasonable price (just under £100 for 6 adults including some starters and some desserts with main courses that pretty much sampled most of the menu). Our waiting staff were polite, very helpful and attentive but not overbearingly so. It was so good, we decided to go again the next night and we certainly weren't let down - my ribeye steak was cooked to perfection (it seems far too few chefs can actually cook a proper rare steak).

The bar area is very welcoming although it does get pretty busy. The staff are efficient and friendly and they have a good range of 'guest' beers available (I'd recommend 'Happy Chappy' if they still have it). The resturant area is very clean, tidy and not over crowded with extra tables (even though they would almost certainly be able to use them). Views from the front of the hotel are fantastic and worth the stop over just on that basis.

One of the key reasons why we went back, aside from the great food obviously, was because of the great service we received and especially from Christian. The guy bent over backwards to squeeze us in the first night, was very friendly and helpful and made this an especially memorable evening for one of our party. I believe he hails from Hungary and he could certainly teach some of the other staff we enoucountered in the Highlands in other places a huge amount about great customer service! As one of our party put it, Christian, you're a legend!

We came away somewhat disappointed by our experience but not totally disillusioned. The hotel has a prime location with a wonderful view but suffers from a mix of high prices and average quality, when it comes to rooms and food. The dining-room is completely soulless, so much so that we chose to eat elsewhere the second night. The bar area looked much more atmospheric. Service was generally good, although there wasn't always someone on reception when you wanted them. I would rate the breakfasts as very good although they would have been so much more enjoyable if served in an attractive area.

Beautiful location and fantastic lunch with a view. Delicious seafood platter. Service was very friendly and the bar where we ate was comfortable. Will definitely be back to plockton and this hotel. We were recommended lunch there by a friend and they were spot on with their praise.

It's always a little strange to read a devastatingly negative review of a place where, despite the pretty awful weather, you've just had a lovely three day stay - I found all the staff extremely cheery and attentive, the pub lovely, and the food ok - I had the veggie option, which was alright. My wife however had a huge plate of mussels followed by a platter of prawns and said it was the best she'd had while we were over in Scotland. I myself fell in love with a Cromarty ale called Hit the Lip, and lord knows when I'll have another chance to try it! With the rain thrashing down outside, we found the pub area a cosy and welcoming place to while away a few hours, and service was brisk and pleasant. The room was fine, we were in the annexe - space to move around in, a view over the water, comfortable bed. My one lament might be a lack of drying facilities - soaked to the bone after a hike, it was impossible to get things dry before leaving. Even a drying stand might be useful, or something similar. And kudos to the staff for coming up with an adaptor for our European plugs. All in all, a lovely visit - hope to go back one day and see what Plockton looks like in the sun!
