As guests of family who are "regulars" at Mid-Ocean, passing along long term comments about the fabulous characteristics of this fine facility. With a special golf course, there are also breath-taking views of the ocean.

Mid-Ocean Golf Club has unique characteristics that encourage visitors to come from distant locations to enjoy the golf course and the club's other outstanding features and accommodations.

Played three rounds in perfect weather during early December 2013. Excellent course. A bit hilly in places. Outstanding ocean views at the beginning and end of the round. Very good conditioning with superb green complexes. Clearly the best course in Bermuda and one of the world's best. Caddies leave a lot to be desired. If it wasn't so hilly, I would have carried my own bag. The on-site rooms were very nice...maybe just a half step behind a typical Ritz Carlton room. Bathrooms had very relaxing rain shower heads.

Played two rounds at the MOC over the Xmas holidays, one with caddies and one with carts.

The incredible Arctic Vortex that completely disrupted North America weather patterns and broke temperature records in New York's Central Park previously set in 1896 manifested itself on the island of Bermuda with high blue skies and gale force winds of 40MPH plus.

Feeling like Amundson racing Scott to the South Pole, we kitted up in wind gear, refused to keep score and treated the rounds as life experiences. And what experiences they were! The first few holes and the final three are all extremely exposed to the ocean front winds and salt spray. Getting a "taste of Bermuda" was easy every time we passed downwind of an exposed bunker, leaving us with Bermuda's unique pink sand in our mouths and eyes and its salt spray coating our glasses and equipment.

The golf was an exceptional learning experience. Any strike not straight and true would slice or hook so violently that scrub balls were in order. Those of us driven by our egos foolishly still pulled the big stick out of our bags on the tees and watched ball after ball fly away home. Those more humble swung their favourite irons and progressed calmly and methodically towards each green.

What truly makes the MOC one of the top courses in the world are its greens. The number of times we misread the breaks and watched our balls swing away from the hole rather than towards the hole is astounding. Our trust in our caddies was shaken multiple times as they called for breaks that we did not believe possible and (with the wind shear added) we truly came to doubt both our eyes and everyone's judgement after a while. Hole location for each of the two days was challenging but not exceptional. Quite simply, reading the greens was a true challenge.

Having played two rounds at Port Royal earlier in the week, I would venture to put forward the perhaps controversial view that for the pure golf experience and challenge, I would rank Port Royal ahead of the MOC.

Port Royal scores higher with more dramatic elevation changes from tee to green, more spectacular ocean front views and vistas, greater pure technical challenge hole by hole, more blind shots due to better use of the natural lay of the land, and better course design in key respects with the ocean cliffs much better integrated to increase the challenge at holes where ever possible and the build up of the holes making for a more dramatic finish on fourteen to eighteen.

The MOC excels in its greens (virtues previously extolled), natural flow from hole to hole and use of water hazards, the snob appeal of the surrounding estate properties (think Michael Bloomberg and Silvio Berlusconi) and the 19th hole, a member driven club house. In terms of facilities, Port Royal simply cannot compare except that it has a more magnificent setting and outstanding ocean views facing west towards North America thus capturing the setting sun at the end of each long day.

Stayed in MOC for 4 days, room excellent, golf challenging but fair, 2nd week in October slow play, weather great. Whole experience spoiled by club house bar closing at 7.00pm Saturday evening, because there were no members present, unfortunately the beach bar / restaurant was off-limits due to a wedding taking place at the same time.
Staff helpful and friendly.
