We arrived with my husband feeling very sick with a chest cold/altitude sickness. Antonio was very helpful with the altitude sickness, even stopping at the local pharmacy for pills on his way into Cusco and returning to the hotel to give them to me when I had been back five times and always found it closed. He also gave another man and myself a ride to the town of Tauca to start a hike to Lamay when it would be difficult to get a cab on a Saturday morning. He gave excellent information and advice on this hike. The hotel itself was comfortable, clean and attractive, the service friendly and attentive.

Stopped here for one night on our way back from Machu Pichu after the Salkantay Trek - but wished we could have stayed longer. The bath was a real treat after our long trek and everyone was so friendly. We arrived late and the restuarant was closed but they rustled up a couple of the best burgers and offered limes and honey to help ease my cough!
The weaving display by a local community in the lodges gardens after lunch was interesting and so colourful - loved it and the local sunday market, if we ever come this way again will definatley be back at La Casa de Barro.

Our time at Casa de Barro was perfect in every way. It started with Jose, co-owner, picking us up (a group of six friends) from the late night train on the way back from Machu Picchu. He was right on time, very accommodating, sharing his knowledge about the Sacred Valley as we drove along - just like he did for the next few days.

The hotel (which is really more like B&B) is lovely. Goes without saying, very clean, large rooms, with everything to be comfortable. We had a matrimonial room, so even had a nice bath. Antonio, the other co-owner, made us feel at home. Asked what time we wanted to have breakfast. When we wanted to just sit around and talk in the evenings, he started fire and offered us a bottle of a good red wine. We had breakfast and dinner every day at the hotel and the food was quite good; served in a cosy, colorful dining room, with a full-wall glass window overlooking the green yard.

The town of Chinchero is centrally located in the Sacred Valley, which was very convenient for our day trips to explore the area. Jose became our invaluable guide to the area, taking us to cool local places off the beaten path (chicha, food, historical sites).

Instead of original two days, we ended up staying four days to enjoy the peace and comfort. Kind people who made us fall in love with Peru.

Room Tip: Ask for the second level rooms as they offer wonderful views on the snow-covered mountain range.

Casa de Barro is a very fashionable lodge in a town nestled high in the mountains. Antonio is a gracious and natural host. The rooms are beautiful, tasteful and cozey. The on-site restaurant is excellent- very wonderful food, real coffee. Chincheros is "the" village to be in if you want to visit and talk with the women who have, for generations, been weaving important Inca-influenced textiles. The lodge is gorgeous- multi-levels, very handsome decor- that is modeled after Italian lodges Antonio experienced during his years in Italy. Ask him about his breakfast with Armani.

First of all the owners are Unpretentious, soft spoken, geniune, and among the most interesting people I have ever met.Attempting to describe this place or its proprietors makes me realize how unworthy I am to do so. Here are only 2 examples of why I love this place and its owners.
When we finished hiking the Inca trail the bus agreed to drop us off at Casa de Barro before heading back to Cusco. When we pulled up Antonio was actually waiting out on the curb for us with his dog Jackson.I have no idea how long he had been waiting, or how he could have known what time we would be getting there but that gesture was so touching that I literally shed tears of joy , I felt like I was back home.
Another example: We were there for Christmas (during the rainy season) prior to arriving I let Antonio know that I really wanted to go to the Sunday Market to shop for textiles.Well that day it actually snowed and the market was rained out. As if sensing my disappointment, later that week( once we got back from the Inca trail) Antonio went out of his way to drive us out to a weaving commmunity in Umasbamba near Laguna Piuray. It is called Centro Artesanal Virgen Purificada, I wrote a seperate review for it, (too much to say to put it all on same review). He never made us feel rushed or like he had more important things to do, and when we got back we realized he had a several tour groups stopping in for lunch, it was a super busy day for him and he still treated us like we were the only ones that mattered to him. Who does that these days?
I could keep going on on why you should stay here , Chinchero itself is a rare gem worthy of exploration not just driving by. We stayed here 1 night before hiking the classic Inca trail and 2 nights after that. It was perfect for us because the altitude was higher than Cusco so we had no problems with the altitude during the trek.Never worried about the safety of our luggage left behind. Furthermore there is an amazing trail which made for a great warm up, behind the church ( do not miss an opportunity to see the inside) which we had completely to ourselves apart from Peruvians from the local communities. So you wonder about the food? Out of this world !! I believe Luisa , Antonios wife is the genius behind it. Every meal was exceptional. As for the grounds of La Casa de Barro, it seems they were constructed to be in harmony with their environment and suit the village perfectly.Out of the 5 different places we stayed in Peru, this was our favorite !!

Room Tip: Don't obsess over it. They are all good rooms.
