I couldn't have enjoyed our stay at Hacienda Bambusa more. We were there in a quiet period, and were upgraded to an amazing suite on the first floor, with a huge balcony. There we got to know the five hummingbirds (3 different types) that liked to drink from the nectar feeder hung there, and found it hard to drag ourselves away.

The rest of the trip, we did not enjoy Colombian food (one more arepa might finish me off!) but we had the best meals of our trip at Hacienda Bambusa. It was a great relief to enjoy meals again! We had the 5 course Colombian regional tasting menus each night, and really enjoyed them. We particularly loved how they staged dinner in different locations around the garden and couryard.

The managers lent us bikes to explore the estate, and organised us an amazing horseback ride with very nicely kept and behaved horses. We also loved an early morning bird-watching trip (despite the painful 5.30am start).

The location is amazing, it's stunningly beautiful and teeming with birds. Plus the pool is gorgeous. I just wish London were closer so I could return more easily!

Room tip: The upstairs rooms have balconies which are lovely

Thank you so much for your brilliant feedback. We are chuffed to hear you say you had the best meals of your trip while at Bambusa - I'll share this feedback with our chef and watch his head grow even larger.;-) We have made a concerted effort to serve good quality food, that is not pretentious or ostentatious - but rather fits with the rural setting and highlights the diversity of quality ingredients available to us here in Colombia.

The hummingbirds will be here when you come back - remember we now have a daily direct flight with Avianca between London and Bogota. Leaves around 10pm and arrives Bogota at 4:30 - so plenty of time to connect with the short flight to Armenia and be here in time for breakfast!

Cheers-

Olivier

Olivier and Alejandro are just the most attentive and lovely managers of this beautiful resort on the coffee region. Our family of 5 had every need and request tended to (they got our lost luggage from our airline, made special foods for the kids, surprised us with new treats every day).

And the guides there are superior - Camelo and Sebastian are just amazing: they know everything about the region and treated us just like family, taking us to breakfast at their home after a hot air balloon ride, playing endless games with the kids, teaching us all about the incredible resources of the region (from banana trees, cacao plants, pineapple plantations).

Rooms are lovely, food is great, activities are super cool, and we felt so incredibly relaxed. Amazing job Bambusa! We hope to be back.

Laura-

Thank you for your lovely note - so sorry in my delay in responding. It was an absolute pleasure having your charming family here at Bambusa. We love seeing kids running around the property - enchanted by the natural world that surrounds us. We consider all guests family and strive to treat them in that way. You are welcome back anytime!

Interesting hacienda property in Armenia Quindio region. Bamboo structure, beautiful grounds and courtyard, pool and bar area. Very few rooms (less than 10), they re spacious and have good cross ventilation. Staff was very attentive, warm and friendly. Food was good, they moved us to different settings each night which was a nice experience. Wine selections very limited (consistent with this region of Columbia)...not a criticism, just a heads up.

The hotel, however, is in the middle of nowhere. You must traverse unpaved and potholed roads for close to 30 minutes to get there. If you are going in/out during your stay, this is not easy. If you are going to park there for a couple days, less of an issue. If back in the region, I probably wouldn't stay there again for this reason. Rating reflects property location - everything else was terrific!

Hi Jim-

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive review of Bambusa and for pointing out the peculiarities of our location. It is true that there are other Hacienda's to stay at in the area that are closer to main roads than Bambusa.

But, by and large it is our setting and location that sets us apart from the others. This is a real working Hacienda, very secluded and surrounded by nature. When touring in the area, it does involve a lot of driving on very curvy roads to get to the various national parks and villages - so the best advice is to plan more time, not less - in the area to allow at least a full day at Bambusa to break up the driving and relax a little.

Thank you again for your honest feedback.

I would be giving this accommodation 6 stars if I could .
Rooms wonderful, food amazing and staff very helpful.
The dinner is a tasting menu - each night a different region. Cost 70M pesos.
The best food we had in Colombia.
Trips out - the walk round the farm with Camilo was great.
We went to a coffee production place near Buenovista - San Alberto - very good.
Filandia and Solento - great places to visit. A good hike as well.
Then we took the spectacular car journey to Medellin ( 6 hours).
So as you can see, plenty to do and a great base to do it.
Special thanks to Alhandro for making our stay so great

Room tip: Those on the first floor seem best

Bambusa is tiny (8 rooms), elegant, quietly luxurious, staffed by the kindest, warmest people. The food is delightful and thoughtfully prepared. Rooms are fully equipped. Service is topnotch. Internet and TV service are fine for those who care. The setting is in the middle of, you know, but it is actually a reasonably short drive from the Armenia airport with direct scheduled jet service from Bogota. The birds are marvelous. The hotel arranges excellent activities with superb college-graduate fluent-English guides, and we learned that we could suggest our own (a fun cooking class using ingredients that we picked ourselves on the grounds of the hacienda). The best activity was a day in and near Pijao, a highland hamlet that lives on coffee, not tourists, and most of our day was spent on the 10 acre coffee farm of Don Leo, up the mountain in a war surplus jeep, whose family served a huge "farm lunch" prepared over a wood fired stove. Then Leo showed us the coffee plants, and led us through the harvesting, washing, sorting, drying, milling steps, and even roasting in his shed. He told us something of his life, which is the story of the coffee farmers in the mountains of Colombia, complete with run-ins with rebels and the narco troubles before the country became safe. A wonderful day, and a marvelous stay. Overall it is much like a visit to a luxury lodge in Africa.

Room tip: There are only eight rooms :)

Thank you so much for the great feedback. We loved your description of the day spent going to Pijao - it's certainly one of the most cross cultural immersive experiences we offer and we try to recommend it whenever possible.

Olivier.
