HostelTrail Popayan

Except for the noise of the street in the room, very good hostel, clean and comfortable, nice and cheap breakfeast, cosy TV room, tables and chairs to eat/write/relax, very helpful and friendly staff. Very well located, between the bus terminal and the city main square (both at a few blocks walking). They organise a great tour to Coconuco hostsprings coming back by bike (30 km, mainly downhill!). I recommend!

My private room was OK, but there are definiteley not enough showers and bathrooms when the hostel is full, which was the case during Semana Santa. But generally the hostel was good, we cannot expect luxory if we pay budget.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is not included but you can order it at extra cost. The fruit salad with yoghurt is really good and contains no additional sugar.
The location is good, 15 minutes walk to the bus terminal and 5 minutes to the historical center.

Because the Caracol hostel from the same owner was fully booked, we ended up in Hosteltrail. The place was clean, but a bit noisy and the was just one shower including toilet at the floor.
The hostel is centrally located and quiet close to the busterminal.
Compared to the Coracol, wich counts the same price for a room, the Coracol is a better deal.

We stayed here for 2 nights in a private room. Decent sized room, but noisy, bathroom a little small. Shower was only warm if it was almost turned off, so you only got a trickle.

On the plus side, it's the first hostel we stayed at in SA that gave us decent info - a map with recommended restaurants and other useful stuff, bus times, prices, things to do and see in the area. Staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast (fruit and granola option) was fresh and filling.

We spent there two nights in december 2013.The hotel is located halfway between bus terminal with Exito megastore (cca 500 m) and the main plaza. The building is not nice, locazed on the corner of busy street, but street noise dont disturbed our sleep, the room (/double with private bathroom for 65000 COP) was big enough with big cupboard,OK bathroom with good hot-water electric shower, there is TV area with collection of DVD and USB stick - (so you can bring your own film on USB),on the walls are tons of informations about the trips, bus schedules, etc.Kim was excellent and helpful owner, the breakfast (5000 COP extra) was delightfull, the only disadvantage is very small dining area - only 1 table for 4 person,so you will probably wait a little bit for your breakfast.

Room Tip: double room with private barthroom was OK

You have to hand it to Tony and Kim, the owners of the HostelTrail guesthouse, they started this business back when Colombian and Popayan were unfashionable destinations. Now, several years later they are still spearheading this travel related revolution in offering affordable and clean accommodation with an emphasis on service and information. Whether your trip is from Ecuador north in to Colombia or elsewhere, you'll not find a better, more secure and more equipped place from which to base your adventures in the region. Recently, having made the trip south once again I was refreshed to find the Hosteltrail still sticking to her principles and business ethic. Keep up the good work guys!
