Reviewed 19 December 2012

We stayed in the family room, a double bed (two singles together) and a single. The family room is in the brand new extension, huge room, lovely views over the countryside. Very large bathroom with shower and everything spotlessly clean. Breakfast was anything/everything we asked for. Owner very friendly and welcoming. Didn't eat in the restaurant but drank in the bar and, again, everyone very friendly.

Room Tip: Family room very spacious and all mod cons

We stayed overnight at the Old Red Lion as we went to a wedding in the area. It was a lovely clean hotel with fantastic views over the valley. Great breakfast and Tom and Anne were very kind hosts.

We have eaten here a couple of times and find the food excellent. High quality products locally sourced & beautifully cooked.
The restaurant is supported with a small friendly bar of character.
The views from the restaurant picture window are worth a visit alone. This is at the top of our list of local restaurants of choice.

The Old Red Lion is a pub trying to be a restaurant and failing miserably. We booked a group table for 7pm and were served our main courses at 9.30, needless to say by 10.15 we were in no mood for deserts and left. The service was incredibly slow with one waitress trying to serve about 40 people, she did her best but needed help. The food itself is very plain and not very good, steaks were arriving overdone and we were not even asked how our lamb or duck was to be cooked, both were also overcooked and tasteless. Some of the meal combinations are strange to say the least and to put a salad garnish on a hot beef casserole is just crazy. The new restaurant does have a fantastic view but this does not make up for the poor quality of the food and the limited beer selection. We will not be returning.

We spent 2 nights at The Old Red Lion in Bruton, Somerset. It is run by Tom and Anne O’Toole. Tom runs the bar which is full of character with hundreds of key chains sent by customers from across the world hung from the ceiling, a wood burning fireplace and a good choice of ales. The rooms upstairs are very clean and modern. It seemed a lot of care had been put towards the linen and other essential details of each room. The whole place looks beautiful without seeming like its been ‘designed’, it feels like a genuine family run establishment.
Anne is a fabulous cook, she cooked a meal for 12 people for our family reunion, and the food was home style, hearty, full or fresh produce and catered for various dietary restrictions. The dining area has uninterrupted view of the Somerset country side.

Room Tip: The weekend lunch is an excellent value for money. Ask for a room overlooking the green feilds. Ask...
