My wife and I had a wonderful stay at this resort last summer. As we were leaving, we decided to come back again this year. We booked our 7 day stay from June 20th to the 27th back in March. As the time to go approached I became somewhat apprehensive thinking that it would be incredibly hard for VIM to duplicate our experience. I feared that I would feel let down. Let me state that not only did VIM duplicate our experience this year; they exceeded it. Let me count the ways:

FOOD: It's hard to beat an eating venue for both breakfast and lunch that is open air, overlooking the beach. Add to that an attentive wait staff that keeps the drinks flowing and good buffet food. In addition, friendly cooks will prepare your breakfast omelet to order or a steak sandwich and various pasta dishes for lunch. For dinner, we particularly enjoyed the Indonesian restaurant, all because of a server named Nalleley, who provided us with arguably our most fun dining experiences. We had great meals also at the Japanese, French, and Italian restaurants. The Mexican restaurant's food was just OK.

DRINK: Mixed drinks tended to be on the strong side. At dinner, the (included) house wines are poured freely by the wait staff. Generally, the bar service was very good.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Last year, we stayed in a Golden Swim-Up Suite and loved it. The idea that you can get up in the morning and take about 10 steps out the back of the suite and get into the pool is incredible. This year, we were "upgraded" to an Emerald Suite because no Swim-ups (which we paid for) were available. We really wanted a Swim-up, but I understand that given the fact that people stay for varying length, it is tough to guarantee rooms all the time. The Emerald Suite was on the second floor facing the ocean. Due to the thick vegetation, we really didn't have and Ocean view. The room had a large hot tub which was nice, but it took about 45 minutes to fill it. Both rooms were very clean. The Housekeeping was excellent, although it took a few days to get the schedule to our liking.

ENTERTAINMENT: The Imperial Band (the House band) plays 5 nights a week. They are very good. We also enjoyed the Mariachi Band (it's all about the front man, and he is great), and the Circus show. The rest is OK.

GROUNDS: I cannot believe how well done and all-encompassing the landscaping is. One would expect the landscaping in the main areas to be pristine. But the well-tended-to brick-paver road that extends about 7 tenths of a mile from the street entrance to the lobby goes above and beyond. The care with which the grounds are taken is a huge selling point for us.

GENERAL: One of the benefits of staying at VIM is how far-flung the grounds are. While golf car-like taxi's" are available to transport people around the facility, it is a great place to walk. Just walking from your room to the dining room to the pool and back can be 1.5 miles. While this may sound painful to some, to us, it is a great way to counter the effects of the rich food served. My wife and I walked 77 miles during our 7 day stay, drank and ate like fools, and didn't gain a pound. We will be back next year.

We stayed in emerald Jr suite plenty of room for two and it was clean and well maintained. The Maid staff was very friendly and accommodating. Be sure to hang the “do not disturb” sign if you don’t want to be bothered as they come by several times a day.

One cannot see the beach from these beach front buildings. Private beach area is a short walk in front of your buildings but is laced with millions of razor sharp coral lying in wait to separate flesh from bone.
There is however a small roped off swimming area in front of main pool clogged with tattooed grouponers. To get a cabana or chair, one either has to buy a privilege package at 120/day pp or get up at 6am. Fairly expensive for a lounge chair per day as the other perks are not necessary.

Grounds are constantly maintained and are beautiful. Walkways are wide with plenty of room and friendly staff.

If you are a drinker there is a bar area at every turn serving non call brands and all the beer you can drink.

If you're a Golden Corral goer, Red Robin, etc., you’ll be in food heaven, but for the real foodie you'll be quick to realize the restaurants are only really good counterfeits much like the Cohiba’s that are sold on the beach. For instance:

• The wait staff provided excellent service but have zero culinary knowledge when asked about food or its preparation.
• Got a sourdough roll in the Italian restaurant and when asked for got a blank look but they do serve it on the breakfast and lunch bars.
• Same sauces on many dishes across ethic culinary lines.
• Onion soup looked awesome from a far but once at your table one realizes it is an onion soupy pot pie and just all wrong.
• Italian desert on the L’Alsace French menu and French desert on the II Olive Italian menu. The same cream in the crème Brule as was in the cannoli as well most every dessert.

If you have had steaks at places like Roast Detroit, Jeff Ruby’s Cincinnati, any Ruth’s Chris, Capital Grill, or even the Outback, quick to know that Restaurant Tierra is closer to the Ponderosa chain.

There are only two places for breakfast and lunch. Both are open air although you can sometimes sit in the air conditioned adjoining to the Hacienda. Birds fly free in both restaurants; the difference is that the Hacienda buffet is enclosed in air condition area at the back of the dining room and off limits to birds. At the Mar & Tierra the birds have free reign. We witnessed birds eating off the buffet and mostly the desert table. The staff seems to not mind the birds dropping in for a bite as they simply turn and walk the other way. So unless you want a bird pecked petitfor for desert or maybe a bird mite on your olive, stick to the Hacienda for breakfast and lunch. Also be sure when you return to the buffet to leave someone at the table to ward off the birds lying in wait. The bread selection on the buffet bar contains almost every bread ever baked by man. Staff is friendly and ready to cook you whatever.

General Notes:
• Bikes are for bike tour only.
• Shooting range is a target on the back of the activity building shot at with a pellet gun
• Don’t base your decision of the resort credit as a value. It will cost you more money to chase the credit unless you were planning on doing them anyway. Credit consisted of:
o 75.00 Toward in room telephone calls; useless.
o 75.00 Toward upgrade which was priced 730.00.
o 25.00 toward bottle of way overpriced wine.
o 100.00 Toward 250+ private beach dinners.
o 75.00 Toward a message, prices vary.
• There are several signs posted disallowing the saving of floats but that doesn’t stop the grouponers from stacking them up and using them for beer pong and bar tops.
• Pool is very cool and somewhat quiet at the far end in front of the snorkel and towel shack
• Snorkeling was impressive and the staff was super knowledgeable on diving.
• Check and know the exchange rate.
• Credit card purchase at the hotel come with a surcharge when charged in pesos
• As always everything the hotel sells is triple the cash
• Taxi prices are very expensive. 26.00 for 15 miles
• Van is only 5.00 but has tight schedule and zero flexibility
• Get a free ride Playa sponsored by the local jeweler. You’re required to stop by on your way to town. They’re nice and do have a selection of cool stuff including the new fad black diamonds which you can get a deal, but go educated on pricing. The van also drops you at a restaurant which is supposed to teach you how to make guacamole. Total gaffe scam. Only there to sell you drinks. I foolishly ordered a coca cola light (diet coke) based on the menu beer prices without asking the coke price. $4.00 for a warm DC. One DC in a party of 9 so the guacamole lesson got real short. They dude dumped ingredients so quick you would need video surveillance to know what was in it. When I asked why my coke was more than a beer cost, she looked at me and said, “You’re in Mexico man” with a “you got it good” smirk. Don’t even sit down, just say no thank you and walk and enjoy the main street.
• Lots of groupon buyers, so if you’re expecting price to separate you from your local beach aqua Velva hotel goers it isn’t going to happen, so if you can’t beat em, join em and find yourself a deal too!

Playa Del Carmen
• A lot of restaurants run by authentic owners native to the country the restaurant represents.
• If you’re from the states there are stores that carry brands not sold in the states.
• The Cohibas are counterfeit, so do your cigar homework before.
• Little Shops are cool and bargaining is an art. Lots of fun.
• Drugs are offered on the street by seedy looking dudes!
• Never get in a cab unless you negotiate the price up front.

Room Tip: stay in a room on the bottom floor if you like to feed animals.

My husband and I stayed at the Valentin Imperial Maya for our honeymoon and had an amazing time. Everything was perfect from the time we checked in until the day we left. The room was beautiful and the service was outstanding. We ate at all the a la carte restaurants and the food was amazing. We enjoyed all the activities, especially the aqua zumba classes in the pool. We are already planning our trip back for our anniversary next year.

I read literally hundreds of reviews before choosing the Valentin & I didn't ever regret my choice. The staff do everything they can to make your stay amazing. We got the basic room (the cleaning people must come all the time...they were so sweet and always kept our room clean), and upgraded to the Privilege Package for an extra $120/day. Should you choose to get the upgrade, you have to do so for a minimum of 3 nights, so we just did it for 3/6 days we were there. Having a reserved beach palapa was incredible, but I felt like that was really the only perk. Dinner reservations were nice, but there was never much of a wait when we ate anyway.

My husband and I are foodies, and here were our favorite dishes from the resort:
Indonesian- Bass chips, Salmon, Pad Thai
Mexican- Tacos, Chips/Guac
Le Marche is best for breakfast & lunch, but watch out for the un-friendly crepe lady!
Japanese- Fried rice (which had the consistency of risotto, but flavors were excellent), Sushi was OK- tempura rolls are best
Italian- Capricciosa pizza
French- Best restaurant. Nearly everything here was incredible. Quail & Shrimp salad, Onion soup, Ratatouille, Filet Mignon was sooo good.

My massage at the Spa was one of the best I've ever had, although I didn't think the aromatherapy was all that great.

We brought about $300 in small bills & were grateful we did. If you want to rent snorkel equipment from the on-site Scuba people, they charge a $20 refundable deposit. This is also were you go to get fresh beach towels. We also used the cash to buy souvenirs when the little market would come to the resort. The rest we used to tip. (Which isn't necessary, but you will want to- everyone is so friendly & gives excellent service.)

My husband normally hates resort entertainment, but each show we saw was actually really good!

Anyway, long story short- GO HERE. The grounds are gorgeous and big, but we liked walking off all the yummy food. When booking flights, remember to consider that Check-In doesn't start until 3 or 4pm. People have written negative reviews complaining about how long Check-In took...that's because they arrived in the morning & expected a room to be available immediately. We got there around 3 & were in a room within 30 minutes.

If you are looking to unwind, whether with your partner or on your own, this is the place to relax. We stayed from June 16-23rd 2014 to find beautiful rain-free weather which made our stay even more enjoyable. Going in June cut the price almost in half which was a good deal for the top notch resort that you will find.

We reserved a Golden Junior Suite (Room 6206) which was a perfect choice as it had quick access to everything, was extremely quiet and looked on to the lazy pool (for those nice after lunch or before dinner dips!). Just make sure to insist on a king bed if you need one or you will be stuck with two doubles. Second floor was a good choice as it provided us with a good view - we didn't go for the swim up which is also a good option on the ground floor.

Beach and grounds are well maintained. Everything is peaceful with plenty of iguanas, birds and flowers of all sorts. Nice feel to the place that we have not found at other resorts we have stayed at.

Food is good - mexican and sushi/japanese restaurants were the best for dinner in our opinion - no reservations, a welcome change from most resorts that have you waiting to reserve every day! Breakfast and lunch available in two locations - Mar y tierra is right next to the beach and offers a good view while you eat. Service is always good in the restaurants (go see Elsi at Le Marché at Breakfast and she will add a ray of sunshine to your day - entire staff is very accomodating and friendly). Beach service is very good if provided by Sonia - quick service with a smile although it is 40 Celsius! Attentive service with a smile everywhere you go.

All in all, a very good choice for a quiet vacation to get away in a kid-free zone. Maybe a little too quiet for some but that is what we prefer.

Room Tip: We reserved a Golden Junior Suite (Room 6206) which was a perfect choice as it had quick access to e...

Just returned from a week at the Valentin Imperial Maya (June 19 to June 26, 2014). I loved it! The hotel was amazing. It was sparkling clean and the grounds were just beautiful! It really exceeded my expectations - especially the restaurants. I would recommend the Indonesian, French and Hibachi Grille as my top three out of the 6. The staff were all very friendly and extremely accommodating. My only negative comment would be the daily maid service which was inconsistent. There is a note in the room to ask for a specific time of day for the room to be serviced - be sure to fill it out. Don't be shy about asking the manager about the service. Once I mentioned the inconsistency I never had an issue again. Be sure to read your daily schedule which is delivered to your room. Take the bike tour of the property - DAY 1 - I learned so much about the property and found things that I didn't know about until our last day. I wish I could have stayed a few days longer. BD Travel in the lobby is good for scheduling the day trips and the prices are reasonable, but the trip to Playa Del Carmen was wasted by a stop at a Jewelry store for more than an hour - unless you are looking for that - I recommend taking the offer from the hotel shuttle. I will definitely go back!

Room Tip: The property is very large and if you are a beach goer try to get into the Golden suites or Platinum...
