Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 July 2014

My wife and I have been to many different all inclusive resorts. I can honestly say the Valentin Imperial Maya is first rate. The hotel is newer then anyplace we ever stayed at. If you go, opt for the Emerald Suites on the second floor, building 13 or 14. This provides you with a great view of the ocean and a short walk to the beach. The pool is by far the biggest one I have ever seen and been in. Restaurants are over the top! It was really nice to see Guadalupe, the hostess from Mar restaurant greet us every morning for breakfast. She always had a smile on her face and was also helping me learn how to speak Spanish! We even joined the rewards program in hopes of going back next year. If you cannot find something that wows you at this place, and all inclusive is probably not for you.

Room Tip: Buildings 13 and 14. Emerald Suite--SECOND FLOOR!

Hi,

Just back from the Valentin and time to get busy writing a review! This was our third visit to this resort and it's still great but I do want to mention a couple of things. So let's get started! As usual this will probably be a novel (LOL) but I want to make sure you get all the info and you're well prepared for your holiday!

Distance from Cancun Airport:

The resort is approximately 25 minutes from Cancun Airport. Luckily for us, we had no stops at other resorts to drop people off so it was smooth sailing!

Arriving at the Resort:

The resort has a beautiful, long and manicured driveway. This is great because it's quiet and you can't hear the cars on the road. When we arrived, the bellboys (? sorry, not quite sure what to call them) welcomed us warmly and took our bags. We proceeded to the (utterly GORGEOUS) lobby to check in.

Check In:

Seamless. They were ready for us, there was no wait and we had all our essentials (card keys, resort info etc) in about 5 minutes. The staff will then drive you to your room with your luggage.

Room:

We got an Emerald Suite, Building 10. Beautiful. The room was spotless, had plenty of towels and toiletries. The bar was stocked with the usual suspects - beer, water, pop. There was even a bottle of champagne there which we immediately put on ice. Everything was in place.

Just want to mention one thing: My hair is super fine, and it took me about 25 minutes (no lie!) to blow dry it. The hair dryer isn't as strong as mine (though in fairness it worked perfectly AND it was super humid down there.) I'd forgotten about this since my last visit. So ladies, if hair dryers are important to you, you may wish to bring your own.

The toiletries were very nice and replenished every day without fail. The water pressure in the shower was perfect every day, no issues whatsoever.

There was a nightly turn-down service, so it was nice to come back to the room after dinner and evening entertainment and have that done. :) When you leave your room to go to dinner, put the "Please Service Room" sign on your door. A staff member walks around noticing that, and I think he'd get staff to go in and tidy up your room.

TV had the usual stations: Fox, CNN, some movie channels. Oh, and three (yes, THREE) porn channels (LOL). NOT my thing at all (call me a nun, sure!) but just wanted to warn you ahead of time! Just keep your hands on the "channel up" button and keep pressing until you pass them ha ha.

Grounds:

As usual, the grounds were beautiful. The staff at the resort were constantly trimming, mowing, gardening and working the grounds to keep them gorgeous. It's nice to see that after all this time, the same care is still taken around the resort to make sure it's beautiful. And it really, really is. So if you go to Valentin, take some time and walk around. It is picture perfect.

Pools:

Absolutely gorgeous and sparkling clean. The main pool has two sections - the louder section and the quiet section. We preferred the quiet section. The louder section got a bit rowdy, and unfortunately one day two guys got into a bit of a scuffle and started throwing punches for a couple of minutes - can you believe that? On holidays. Grow up and act properly when you're on holiday! Sheesh! I was hoping that security would step in but they didn't see it. After that we went to the quiet pool and all was fine. Too bad some people act like yahoos at a place like this, but what can you do.

Restaurants:

Ok ... I'm a foodie. You cannot believe how good the food is here. It really is a touch above the other resorts down there. Of course, you'll know by reading brochures that no reservations are required at this resort. Just choose your dining option and go. There was hardly ever a wait and we usually dined at 7 pm. If you do have a bit of a wait, they just give you a beeper so you can go grab a drink and wait.

One thing about the restaurants - they have a dress code and they really appreciate it when you adhere to it. That means no jean shorts or flip flops at dinner, and no tank tops for men. One woman came to the French restaurant in jean shorts and a tank top and they let her in - I assume it was because she was in line and they didn't want to embarrass her (which was probably the right thing to do) ... but still, please do make the effort to dress up as they clearly appreciate it when you do.

Ok, as a foodie, I would be remiss if I didn't point out my faves:

French: the filet mignon, the chicken stuffed with mushrooms and the Baked Alaska. WOW! Great!

Italian: the beef tenderloins in gorgonzola sauce are a MUST try, along with just about every dessert on the menu!

Mexican: One thing about this restaurant is that it's got an open kitchen, so the heat from the kitchen makes the restaurant feel much warmer than it really is. When you dine here (and you should, because it is FABULOUS) try to get a table closer to the front of the restaurant where the air conditioning feels much cooler.

There are other dinner restaurants there, too, but we stuck to these three spots as we just remembered them to be so great and, as usual, they didn't disappoint!

Breakfasts: There are two restaurants - you can have breakfast at the big restaurant which has an air conditioned section) up closer to the lobby, or you can sit outside at the restaurant closer to the beach which is what we did. I know many reviews will say that it's the usual - eggs, pastries, fruit, etc. and that's true. It's hard to come up with ingenious breakfast ideas but I will say this - everything was super fresh and tasty. So enjoy! They make great omelettes and the pastries are fabulous. And the waiters are always happy to give you as many Mimosas as you want! The restaurant seemed to get very busy in between 9 - 9:30 so there was a wait of a couple of minutes then, but no more than that.

Staff:

The staff at this resort are among the friendliest and most helpful we've ever encountered.

There was only one incident - on our second last day, we went to get our towels for the pool (there is no towel card system, you just go get your towels) and I asked for an extra towel and he wouldn't give me one. He said "No, two towels only." I needed it for my neck (I roll it up behind my neck as I have some issues with my back) and he wouldn't budge. Apparently they were short towels that morning. Ok, fine, but say it nicer to your guests, don't be a jerk about it. He could have said "Can you come back in an hour or so when I have more towels?" which would have been totally fine! But he didn't. Clearly, he didn't care one way or the other.

To me, the customer is always right (especially when they pay a ton of money to come there for a week and all they ask for is one extra towel!) and for the record, we always ask for things nicely because we know it's hard to work in this industry. So we walked away thinking "Let's not let this one idiot ruin it for us." I'm sorry I didn't catch his name because I definitely would have mentioned this to management. This was the only personnel issue we encountered and as I mentioned before, I wasn't going to let this guy ruin it - the rest of the staff are so incredibly nice. About an hour later I found a guy transporting fresh towels to the towel bar and I asked him for a couple extra and he happily obliged. Thank you! :) See? How hard was that?

Shuttle to Playa Del Carmen:

The hotel provides a shuttle for guests to Playa del Carmen. We didn't use it but as I recall it was $18 U.S. per person round trip ... which is actually cheaper than a cab (which, as I recall, was about 23 U.S. per person each way) so if you are planning a day trip to town, you should consider this service and save some $$.

"Privilege Club"

Ok, this is the one issue I have and it's not really bad but I do want to bring this to your attention so you know ahead of time.

They have this "Privilege Club" thing where, for an extra charge, you can have a day bed reserved at the pool AND at the beach with your names on it for the duration of your stay. During that time, they are yours and no one else can use them.

That's great and while we didn't use the service, many people do. Anyway, here's the issue - when you get to the beach, the Privilege beds are lined up both left and right of the resort nearest to the ONLY beach bar closest to the main part of the resort. You won't see any regular loungers. So you're thinking "Where are they?" Well, they're all stacked at the far end of the beach (to your left), after the day beds. So what you have to do is walk down there, grab your loungers and then drag them to the spot you wish to suntan.

I would suggest to management that they reconsider this a bit - it's not really fair for those of us who didn't pay for day beds to have to walk so far and drag our chairs across the beach. It's not a deal breaker or anything, but I just found it kind of lousy in a way because the impression you get is that the people who pay for the Privilege package get a better spot on the beach than the rest of us. Ok, enough about that, just my 2 cents worth on the beach chair issue. :)

There is drink service on the beach as well, and these people work so hard chugging drinks around so please, please, tip them because they really are nice and they deserve it.

Beach:

Ok, the beach. Playa Secreto is stunning! You can walk up and down the beach and it's great for swimming. The sand is powder white and the beach is very clean (except the occasional seaweed). A few vendors will come up to you and ask if you want to buy anything but they're nice and they don't harass you at all. I friendly "No, gracias" is all they need and they will not ask again.

Drinks:

I'm a wine girl, so I found the wine good at the resort. When ordering drinks for hubby, I always asked for Grey Goose. They have top shelf liquor but seems you have to ask for it specifically when ordering your drinks. But when you ask, they oblige. Again, the bar staff are great. They work hard and always have a smile on their faces.

Room Service:

The room service menu has the usual stuff on it. We ordered it one evening and it came hot and delicious, in a reasonable amount of time (about 25 min).

Shopping on Site:

The resort has some shopping on site - a clothing store, jewellery store, a drug store, etc. So if you run out of something you can probably get it there.

Evening Entertainment:

There is entertainment on site. In the evenings, they have musicians playing in the courtyard, and then of course the shows in the theatre. We didn't do the theatre this time, but we've seen their shows previously and they're enjoyable.

Ok, so summing it all up ....

The Valentin is an excellent choice, so if you're sitting on the fence and not sure whether to book it, I can say that you will really enjoy it if you do. It's a beautiful, upscale resort on a stunning beach with great staff, excellent food and amazing pools.

The million dollar question: will we return for a fourth visit? Most certainly. Probably not right away, as we like to try other vacation spots as well, but we will definitely go there again at some point.

I hope this review has helped! Any questions, just drop me a line. Hope you enjoy your vacation! Happy travelling. :)

This was our second consecutive yearly trip to the Valentin Imperial Maya. Simple put, we know of nothing that would have made our trip more enjoyable. The service, the room, the restaurants and food, the pool, and the facilities were first class. We have traveled to Europe and the Caribbean many times. We have never received better service and though we have found places which may have had more glitter, we have never been more comfortable or had a more relaxing and enjoyable time. We are already planning to return in the summer of 2015. We just can not think of any place we would rather go.

I wouldn't go out of my way to deter someone from staying here, but I also wouldn't jump to recommend it. The resort itself is beautiful. The rooms are nice and spacious. The service is very well trained and are extremely courteous. You can find that at most resorts, though.

I did like our stay but there were things that I didn't like. The food was OK. I love having pico de gallo at almost every meal. The lunch and breakfast buffets were good. La Hacienda and Indonesian restaurants were also good. Ginger's sushi wasn't that great; the salmon is the salmon from breakfast that they use as lox and the tuna is far from fresh. The hibachi was pretty good but nothing spectacular. The French restaurant came with the worst thing I have EVER eaten in my life. I always try new things and will eat pretty much anything. I ordered sweet breads which were REALLY good. Then came the filet mignon that I ordered. It wasn't steak. It had the texture of uncooked pork. The flavor was also terrible. It was a really disgusting experience and it still makes me shudder to think about it.

The pool is nice but mostly in the sun so if you are looking to cool off, go to the beach. It can also be tough to get a chair by the pool and forget about trying to get one in the shade. At the beach they have chairs that you can grab yourself and place anywhere on the beach and they offer big umbrella huts for shade, but like the pool, they get taken pretty quickly.

I don't understand the people complaining about walking too much; it's a resort not a hotel. The restaurants are mainly close together but it is weird that there is usually only one path to get to them and no other direct routes to take. The bars are easy to find and the staff is walking up and down the hot beach asking if you need anything which was really nice of them. The shows were good, too. They have nice entertainment.

The rooms were very nice, but if you don't move around much the power to the room shuts off. This creates two issues; One- when you get back to the room it can take a bit to really cool back down since the fan turns off and Two- at night the motion sensor blinks if you move so it can wake you up. We also heard the people upstairs stomping around whenever they moved. One of the reasons I picked an adults only resort was so I didn't have to wake up to kids running around above me, but the walls seemed thinner and I was woken by the thundering giants above.

All in all, it was a good vacation but mainly saved by the service of the staff. Everyone went out of his or her way to make sure that our needs were met and that really is the only reason I would consider going back.

Room Tip: If you aren't doing the privilege packing, ask for a room in building 4. It is close to the main...

We just returned from a 7 night stay at the Valentin . Very good reviews and a good price from Luxurylink . Com helped make the decision of which all adults AI to try this year. Our package included a Deluxe Jr Suite. After some research, I decided to request a 3rd floor room in building 5. Patricia Medina reservations manager finally responded to my 3 rd email request and stated she couldn't guarantee it but would make note of it. We wound up getting a 2nd floor room in building 4, which was satisfactory but building 5 was my preference.

We arrived to a friendly staff although it seemed to be a hectic somewhat confusing time. We didn't receive a cool towel but did eventually get a welcome drink. We waited several hours for our room to be ready but were offered a little changing room so we could not waste any beach time.
The room itself was ok although the furniture configuration was awkward. The first thing we did was move the couch (which sliced the room in half) against the wall opposite the sliders- this greatly improved the mobility and feel of spaciousness. We didn't use the jacuzzi except to use the ledge of it to store toiletries etc as there was little vanity space. I'd recommend pointing the shower head toward the inner wall of the stall otherwise you'll wind up with a big puddle on the slippery marble. Housekeeping services were adequate- didn't get turn down service consistently but this was no big deal for us.

General Resort: beautiful well maintained grounds- lots of winding trails and wildlife to enjoy. The resort was very spread out and required a lot of walking. We didn't mind walking to the various restaurants but the multi daily trek from pool to beach was the longest I've ever experienced at a resort. If you appreciate the convenience of going back and forth from pool to beach in just a couple minutes and a view of the beach from the pool, you may find this set up a little annoying.

The pool was very large and divided into a quieter section as well as an end where the louder partiers gathered- great idea although the majority of the floats seemed to wind up on the loud side. If I returned to the resort I would've brought my own as floaties were hard to come by. We had fabulous weather the entire week- warm and sunny but it did make for very warm not so refreshing pool water.

The beach was large and beautiful- soft white sand, perfect water temp although the ocean was a bit rough and "riding the waves" was the main activity- no floating on calm waters here.

Drink service at the beach was pretty good considering the long hot walk these servers had to endure several times a day from bar to loungers. Eva, was absolutely the best server- very sweet and efficient. Most of the employees are very friendly, hardworking folks - we did our best to tip them well- they deserve it!! Waiters Alfredo ( French) and Sergio (Asian) we're outstanding as well as Guadalupe, hostess of the beachside buffet. Jorge the bellman and trolley driver was great with a fabulous personality! There were a couple of surly waiters in the buffet who appeared to be indifferent at best, but overwhelmingly the staff sought to please.

Our favorite restaurants were the Indonesian and Asian. The only entree I didn't really enjoy was the seafood cannelloni at the Italian. I think the French was over rated but the interior ambience as well as outdoor eating of the all the restaurants really were lovely. The only dessert worth ordering in my optinion was the coconut crusted ice cream at Ginger; just about every appy we ordered was very good albeit small.

Buffets got a little tiresome after a while but generally had a decent variety of fresh tasty food. I really enjoyed the mussels in cream sauce and the smoked salmon at breakfast.

Entertainment was the typical cheesy AI resort stuff but there was a talented female singer in the plaza, imperial band was good and a nice surprise in the French restaurant one evening with a cellist. For comic relief, there was Johnny Ross who played a mean sax but whose singing ( think Elvis and Neil Diamond) bordered on " is he being serious???"

The only off resort activity we did was a shopping trip to Playa Del Carmen. Eating at some local places was a fun diversion but the shopping unimpressive. Scores of repetitive shops offering the same trinkets and vendors so persistent that it made you want to run. The resort vendors were also very pushy and seemed to scare away the browsers rather than invite interest.

Overall a generally nice resort, food above average, gorgeous grounds......a bit smaller and calm waters would've given it 5 stars, but for its reasonable price- well worth it!

PS kudos to USA transfers for a seamless private transfer to and from airport

Room Tip: I think building 5 is closest proximity to the quiet end if the pool and beach entrance

My wife and I recently stayed here for our 1 year anniversary. We wanted to stay an inclusive place that was adults only and also that was away from the crowded touristy area. This place was just the place.
The resort is huge and beautiful. It has a historic look and mexican/spanish look to it. We stayed in the Golden Jr. Suite. The room was beautiful. It was a very nice sized room. The bathroom was very big as well. Our only complaint about the room that were in was that there was a moldy smell. We complained to management a couple of times and they did make adjustments but the room still had a moldy smell no matter their attempts to rectify the situation. It was not terrible.
There is a main pool where most of the people were and behind our room was a more private pool which was still a large pool, it ran behind the rooms with the Jr. Suites.
We found the resort very relaxing and very large as well. There are 8 restaurants and we ate 7 of them. The one we missed seemed to be the most popular which was the Sushi/Hibachi place. In order to get seated at the Hibachi place you need to make a reservation as soon as the concierge opens at 9AM.
We found the food delicious for the most part. We did not have one bad meal. Our favorite was the Indonesian restaurant which served thai food which we like a lot.
There was a show every night, our only complaint was that for the most part the shows were short, typically between 30-45 minutes. We did enjoy the entertainment.
In regards to the overall resort we were very impressed with the cleanliness of the resort. The place was spotless, you did not see trash or even weeds growing in the gardens. The resort seemed like a tropical paradise with beautiful plants and ponds throughout the resort. Our only complaint in regards to this area is that we would like to have seen fish in the ponds that ran throughout the resort, like Koi fish. In addition the resort had a beautiful clean private beach. The water was spectacular and there were fish and plenty of them to swim with at the beach.
Our suggestions would be get a Jr. Suite as they are in a good location and have the private pool which is still big. If you are going to the large resort pool get there early. There is a fitness center but it is small and got crowded really fast at least when we went in the morning. A resort that large should have a larger fitness center. In addition there is spa which we found very nice and relaxing.
We recommend this place as it is exclusive, private as in once you get off the main road and into the entrance you have to drive a ways to get in. It made it feel safer.

Room Tip: My advice would be to stay in the Jr Suites, we stayed in the Golden Jr. Sutie, the room as a jacuz...
