We were honeymooning at Valentin from July 27 to Aug 3; We had a junior suite in building 5, room 116; we asked upon arrival of an upgrade for honeymooners but we were only offered a discount on another room. We decided to see the room and decide if we were happy with it and we decided it was close to everything and didn't bother upgrading. We were close to the main pool - some people say it was noisy, we had no issues but the pool closes at 8 and it's not noisy at night at all. In the mornings, also quiet, the pool is only noisiest around mid afternoon but again, we weren't at all bothered by it. The room was beautiful, very clean, the TV's are old and should be updated but we hardly used it anyway. Bring hair conditioner if you have long hair.....the one provided in the room is not great. We had a good laugh about the bathrobes - one size fits only small people. It fit me but my hubby not so much....good for a chuckle however. Building 5 is also close to the beachside restaurant, for buffet breakfast and lunch - they also the steak & seafood a la carte dinner there. The room was also close to the beach access path. We did think the hotel could put a walking path at the beach, on the back behind the turtle enclosure and behind where all the lounge chairs are set up. Would make the access a lot easier for guests and the bar staff when they are walking back and forth to deliver drinks on the beach. The programs and activities at this resort were very organized and there was always something to do, if you wanted something to do other than laying on a lounge chair. Someone was always organizing a beach volleyball game or soccer on the beach; in the pool they were doing aquatic aerobics and games; there were bike tours and kayak tours....all included.
The restaurants were great! We tried almost all. We did think there should have been more communication as to when the special buffet nights were, we would have organized our schedule around them. We missed the Mexican buffet because we booked our dinner on the beach for that night and we missed the Carribean buffet because we booked the Hibachi for that night. The dinner on the beach we only did because it was our honeymoon but although it was very romantic and all that...it was over priced. It was special though and the service was fantastic. My favorite meal the entire week was at the Italian restaurant, I had the ravioli carbonara. My hubby had the salmon carpacio app.....he did not enjoy it. I had the bruscetta which was very enjoyable. The French restaurant was excellent however, order more than one appetizer each and share, they are like teaser's, so good but you want more! The breakfast and lunch buffets are very good also.
We never had a problem finding lounges at the pool or the beach. They do get busy but if you are up and out early enough you will have no problems getting seats. We preferred the beach for the sea breeze; there is no breeze at the pool so it does get very hot and the pool temp was like a bath tub - the time of year I suppose.
We went on 2 excursions, the Mayan Adventure and Tulum - extremely fun! We enjoyed them both.
We also went on the Playa Del Carmen shopping tour....first stop is the jewellery store....hard core selling tactics. But, it's not wrong to say no. Then we stopped at a local coffee shop which is also a Hostel and they talked about how the coffee is made and they roast the beans there, it was not a lengthy discussion, we enjoyed it and were off to 5th avenue for some souvenir shopping - the vendors (some) can be very pushy....barter, barter, barter - they will always be negotiable. We were supposed to go for a guacamole making lesson but for whatever reason, it didn't happen. We were told the restaurant wasn't open. We made our way back to the coffee shop to await our transport back to the resort and my husband and I were first back so we had a cappuccino and espresso and a nice talk with one of the ladies working there....about weather in Canada and her homeland...thoroughly enjoyable!
All in all, we loved our time at the Valentin and we would go back. We were discussing when we would return while we were there as a matter of fact, probably our 5th and/or 10th wedding anniversary, however, we would probably book with prestige benefits.
