Normandale Century Inn

Reviewed 19 February 2014

We booked our Valentines getaway at the Normandale Century Inn ($159) and it was a very relaxing and special experience.

When we arrived, Brenda greeted us and took us up to our room decorated with valentine hearts on the night tables and a few valentine chocolates. She then handed us menus for our dinner and breakfast from which we made our selections so she could have them ready at our chosen meal times.

In the dining room the decor on the tables changes with the holiday or the season. It's very pleasant.
Dinner came with corn bread, a choice of three salads, roast beef with yorkshire pudding, pork with a maple sauce, or chicken cordon bleu, roasted or mashed potatoes, broccoli and carrots, New York cheesecake or chocolate mousse, coffee or tea; drinks are additional. We had the roast beef and the meal was exceptional - the cornbread, Caeser's salad and the cheesecake among the best I have ever had.

Breakfast had a large variety of cold selections and a hot offering of toast with scrambled eggs and bacon. Brenda includes many local ingredients in the menu. Norfolk is developing a reputation for its wines and artisanal foods. And rightfully so.

We live only a half hour drive from Normandale and have passed through many times, in fact, about 27 years ago we stayed at the now closed Union Hotel B&B across the road. It, too, was another treasure. Before dinner we went for a walk around the hamlet and although we have lived in this area for almost 30 years, it was the first time we explored on foot. What a gem. It's a mix of permanent and summer homes. And it is lovely, with 2 or 3 accesses down to the beach.

Brenda and Hans have slowly and thoughtfully renovated the property they purchased almost 20 years and have created attractive, warm, and welcoming accommodation for their guests. Hans is adding yet another amenity - a lounge to which only guests will have access so that they have another place to go - private, yet not in their rooms.

I can see the Normandale Century Inn as a possible venue for an intimate special purpose retreat or a girls getaway now that the lounge is underway.

Brenda and Hans are the consummate hosts: they have that rare ability to make you feel that they are really happy that you have come to their establishment and do everything they can to make you comfortable.

Room Tip: The Port Rowan Rowan room and the Port Ryerse rooms have larger size windows - are brighter. The Nor...

This lovely B & B is a great escape from the City. The breakfast was superb and the lunch was simple but tasty. The dinner menu looked like a locavore's delight, but we had made other plans. The roooms are small, but very comfy. Our bathroom was surprisingly luxurious (large, marble, excellent shower) and the owner puts in a nice selection of magazines. The deck and backyard gazebo are great places to watch the birdfeeders. My husband found some wild turkeys in the ravine behind the Normandale Inn. This is a great place to relax and explore the beautiful Lake Erie countryside.

My husband and I spent a night at the Normandale Century Inn after spending the day in Port Dover for Friday the 13th.The rooms are quite nice and all the food served in the restaurant tastes like homemade. The owner is very friendly and accommodating. The continental breakfast was one of the best we have had.We loved the fact that you choose what you want the night before and she serves it to you at your table in the morning. You even get to pick you time slot.I would definitely stay there again. The only drawback was that we had trouble finding it because the town of Normandale is not in the gps and even the local police hadn't heard of it.

We found the Normandale Inn was clean, freshly renovated(2008) with nice updated bathroom and flat screen TV. All rooms are small on the second floor at the attic( I bumped my head a few times on the low ceiling), some facing a road. There is an AC in the room and WiFi. The room price in high season is $125, the breakfast price isn't included. You would have to pay $6.50/person. Brenda is a very nice host and a good cook. The Inn restaurant faces a garden where you can observe the bird feeders, a garden and enjoy a peace.
The Normandale Century Inn is 5 min walk from the small excess to the Lake Erie or 5 min drive to the Turkey Point beach.

We went to the Inn May long w/e, had a room facing out to road. Suggestion, for a quieter room, maybe take one at the back. All rooms currently on 2nd floor, they are adding another on lower level, during the day, can come and go through the front, evening, there is a side door for guests only. There is A/C in the rooms, Tv's, and connect to WiFi

We had taken our own picnic lunch, and ate on the patio, there was no issues. We did have dinner there on Sat. night, food was okay, but I would not give it a 5 star, and it can be costly. Breakfast, you fill in a menu choice the night before, unless you want alot to eat, choose from what is included in your nights stay, the breads are "delicious".

Normandale, is between Port Dover, which we did one day, go for the perch, no matter where/when it is busy. Check out the wineries, the adventure centre for zip-lining, and a short drive to Long Point, with lots to do.

The Normandale Century Inn's yard, attracts every bird you can imagine, so take your camera.

It met our criteria: clean, close and cost effective. We booked this spot for its proximity to a nearby campgound (yes, we are glampers!). The owners were most accommodating (and most apologetic for the sulfur smell in the water -- wells were very dry this summer!) As nice a little inn and restaurant can hardly be found.
