While the rooms are odd-shaped and the toilets small, these features go with the territory when it comes to heritage and historic properties. Yes, it means climbing stairs but they are not impossible. The high point is that it is bang opposite the University of California at Berkeley and is close to a few historic bars and restaurants that are part of history when it comes to student protests in the 1960's. You may be asked to show age ID's in these bars since the area is dominated by students from Berkeley. The free breakfast is adequate and sets you up for the day pretty nicely. There is a car park which is useful if you are driving. However, if you are taking a flight to/from SFO, as I did, there is a well-located BART station which is a 5 minute ride by shuttle. You can get a 45 minute train ride to/from the airport. The front office staff are extremely helpful and immediately pulled out a BART schedule and helped me with change for BART tickets. If your travel plans involve visiting Berkeley, I would strongly recommend using the Bancroft.
