“Small Heritage Property and Excellent Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014

While the rooms are odd-shaped and the toilets small, these features go with the territory when it comes to heritage and historic properties. Yes, it means climbing stairs but they are not impossible. The high point is that it is bang opposite the University of California at Berkeley and is close to a few historic bars and restaurants that are part of history when it comes to student protests in the 1960's. You may be asked to show age ID's in these bars since the area is dominated by students from Berkeley. The free breakfast is adequate and sets you up for the day pretty nicely. There is a car park which is useful if you are driving. However, if you are taking a flight to/from SFO, as I did, there is a well-located BART station which is a 5 minute ride by shuttle. You can get a 45 minute train ride to/from the airport. The front office staff are extremely helpful and immediately pulled out a BART schedule and helped me with change for BART tickets. If your travel plans involve visiting Berkeley, I would strongly recommend using the Bancroft.

The Bancroft Hotel requires stair climbing, and the bathrooms are very basic, not luxurious, but the bed was comfortable, we enjoyed the location and the history of the place, the breakfast was fine, and it was fun to stay somewhere not corporate. Wouldn't choose it every time, bc sometimes comfort trumps history, but might stay there again when in Berkeley. Pretty convenient for getting to the U.C. Berkeley Botanic Garden, a must-do when we're in Berkeley.

Two weeks ago, we stayed at The Bancroft Hotel for three nights. I was very disappointed in the condition of the small, bathroom. The tub was totally stained and needed to be replaced, as did the tile in the tub enclosure which had mold in the grout. At the very least the tile should have been regrouted. When I first opened the door to the bathroom , there was a silver fish in the tub. Yuk! Also, the whole time we were there, there was female hair in the tub enclosure which made me wonder whether or not the housekeeping staff ever cleaned the tub when we were there. Finally, the toilet spontaneously flushed periodically , which was an annoyance at night. Despite calling it to the attention of the staff at least twice, and despite getting a commitment that it would be looked at, nothing was ever done or no explanation was given as to why it could not be fixed. The only positive aspect of this hotel was the breakfast which was lovely and looked out over UC Berkeley. The continental breakfast offerings were tasty, with freshly baked muffins and fresh orange juice and delicious coffee. It did not make up however for the condition of the bathroom and rather stained hallway carpets. We do not plan to return to this hotel.

definately old - layers of paint, ancient bathroom, all sorts of odd things going on. If you don't like Marriotts, this may be the place for you.

-- no elevator

-- california breakfast: pastries and stuff plus the obligatory granola and yogurt. I was the only white American English speaker in the breakfast room. everyone else was either young and edgy or old professorial types.

-- across from the law school. the campus is huge, so it could be a walk depending on where your going. downtown is a good 15 minute walk away.

-- parking lot is too small - other cars were repeatedly blocking me in.

-- 10 foot floor to ceiling glass doors out onto a very narrrow balcony were beautiful; room was otherwise on the small side.

-- nice cafe next door, and access to all sorts of fast food (and better) on Durant and Telegraph

I comment on the quality of the hotel itself, as the management bungled our reservation and left us without a room.

Our group booked a group of four rooms back in the fall. The had our reservations for *five* months. Then, weeks before our trip, I got an email saying that our rooms were meant for another group, so our reservation would not be honored. Have you ever received such an email from a hotel? I never have.

I called the manager, and be basically said "tough luck." Terrible. Horrible experience. Crappy customer service. Poor management. The Hotel Bancroft

Room Tip: Don't expect room requests to be honored.

I love this hotel for many things, Having a great staff, being close to campus, having beautiful rooms, nice breakfast. However, the last 2 stays were this winter, and the heat didn't work well at all either time.

First, the staff are super friendly and couldn't be nicer.

However, the hotel is rather noisy. It is an historic building, so it only has single-paned windows. There are several frats near by, so when they start to party, it's like the party's in your room, too. The boiler/heater makes a lot of loud noises at night. If you happen to be in a room over the outside walk-in fridge/freezer, you run the risk of being woken-up by the clanging of the latch by the bakery workers going in and out of it at night (there's a bakery below the hotel).

Be careful if you have kids or are prone to being drunk in your room. The hotel is older and the windows are very low to the ground, so it's easy to imagine someone falling-out of the window when opening or closing it.

There is no air conditioning in the hotel.

Not all of the mattresses have been replaced, so if you're in a room that doesn't have a new mattress, you run the risk of getting an older mattress that has springs poking up.
