Owner description: Past Strawberry Canyon is the 34-acre Botanical Garden, which holds about 13,000 species of plants. The species are organized according to regions of the world, and the garden has a great collection of native Californian plants. Bring a picnic basket and some money for the bookstore and admission (closed the first Tuesday of each month and free on the first Thursday of each month). Be sure to check out the conservatory (for tropical plants) and the Chinese medicinal herb garden. The garden is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day of the year except the first Tuesday of each month, Thanksgiving Day, December 24 and 25, December 31, January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tours are also available on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Ever changing scenery”

This is a world class botanical garden with vegetation from throughout the world that is well displayed. Lovely spots to picnic if you bring a sandwich or whatever. Great little shop where you can pick up local plants.

“A botanical garden that is large enough to explore”

The UC botanical garden is really a grouping of gardens that represent different ecosystems. You can wander around for quite a while enjoying the varied environments.

“Fabulous plant species”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

UC Botanical Garden is a hothouse of delight if you are into plants. The variety and sheer beauty of nature's progeny will delight you. And sometimes astound you. A couple of times a year there is a plant sale, a very popular event. There is also a Saturday clinic for bringing your ailing plants for experts to identify and prescribe treatment.

“200 something acres of....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2013

Gardens. Akin to the Huntington Library and Gardens. If you are a current Cal student, you hop in for free; unfortunately, the alumni don't get any discounts (yet). There are beautiful gardens stretching along paths marked by cozy benches. I found the herb and cacti garden interesting. There is also a section with plant sales and greenhouses with bees. This place can easily take up 3 hours if semi rushed.

“Should check it out”

Gorgeous gardens. It is amazing how they created gardens by theme: Japanese, midwest, southwest, etc. A really nice visit and quite a bargain. One of those off the beaten path things to do
