“Great Sausages”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

Seeking decent German food on a rainy day at lunch time, we popped into Gaumenkitzel. The restaurant is very open with a high, beamed ceiling and fans plus lots of tall windows. It was very modern German looking to me, but quite cold that day. They have some German foods for sale against the wall. Incidentally, the bathroom was very clean and it was funny that it really was just like the bathrooms over there. Our server was very accommodating in helping us find a table that was in a warmer part of the restaurant. Hubby got his Wiener schnitzel which came with delicious red cabbage and a carrot salad that I liked but was a bit too lemony for him. The schnitzel was just okay. I ordered spaetzle with red beet sauce--something a little different which I really liked. Plates were a bit on the small side, and hubby was hungry, so he ordered a side of knock wurst. They were delicious. Our server said they order them from New York--no wonder! We all agreed that you can't really get a good sausage around here--they're all full of turkey, chipotles, artichokes, and cranberries--yuck. Give me authentic European sausage like this any day.

“Fish- Homberg-style”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

You know you're in for a good dinner when you casually walk into an establishment at 5:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and are politely asked 'Do you have a Reservation?' OH YES!! If you like German food and you want to have a nice experience, do visit Gaumenkitzel. My husband's Mother is from Germany so he knows German food. We LOVED this place! Excellent beer, my fish dinner was FABULOUS, the German beer selection good and the Black Forest Cake? Worth calling to make sure they have it! ;) Looks like they have a nice little happy hour too so check that out also. (Proof that we loved this place? We brought my husband's older brother who confirmed he loved it equally as much as us!) Did I mention they have 3-5 cake selections daily? And homemade jams and chocolate sauces. A German-American's dream come true! Do visit!

“Hearty German food with plenty of veggie options”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

This is one of the better restaurants in the It is Berkeley of course so at Gaumenkitzel the classic German sausage and potatoes options are complimented with a nice variety of vegetarian friendly options. They have a lot of different beers options, somehow beer for breakfast just feels right at a German restaurant and they have some very tasty brews on tap.

The space itself is well lit and pleasant and the staff have always been attentive and pleasant when we have gone.

“German food in California!”
Reviewed 8 December 2013 via mobile

I was in Berkley on a business trip and stopped for lunch on Friday. It was really weird eating in a German restaurant but the food was great. I ordered a very authentic pumpkin soup and plate of cheese, sausage and bread. Excellent.

Service was great, brews were great, food was FANTASTIC! We had a reservation, and were seated immediately. Enough menu selections that we'll be back to try items our group of five didn't.
