“Housekeeping needs some help.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2010

Stayed last weekend at the BCC. Very nice place, overall. Food was much improved from a year ago, although seemed expensive. When we got home, I realized that I'd left my cell phone charger in the room. Contacted the hotel, and the clerk told me that housekeeping had "8 cell phone chargers and they're all black," from guests. I asked if they were identified by room number, and he said that they were not identified at all. So, I'm going to have to buy a new charger. It would seem to me that housekeeping should be diligent about identifying lost items by room number, especially cell phone chargers, which are impossible to describe and identify. When I told the clerk this, he halfheartedly agreed with me, but really didn't seem to care very much.

Loved the Club. The room was big and clean, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was well appointed with lots of towels. The swimming pool is a feature of the Club, well worth a look even if you don't swim there. Complimentary breakfast was good - plenty choice of breads, cereals, fruits and drinks plus a different egg dish made fresh to order each morning. The service was excellent, in the restaurant and the housekeeping. The front desk staff were very helpful. The location is good as it is away from the bustle of San Francisco but only a 15 minute BART ride. I would certainly recommend this club except make sure you request a room away from the elevator if you are a light sleeper. It was built in 1930 and is quite unique but a bit noisy if you are sleeping near it. Free internet access doesn't reach the top floors but there is a computer and printer in the lobby for anyone to use.

This hotel is a gem. It's in an old historic building which is in itself a delight, with a Roman-style swimming pool and two shady patios resplendent with plants and flowers. The included breakfast can be rolls or eggs and bacon. The rooms themselves are not large, but are no means too small and are clean and comfortable. Having windows that open fully is nice. There is no television in the room, which I consider a plus, although some may miss it.

My husband and I spent several pleasant nights here last month. I can't imagine staying anyplace else. If you are interested in architecture you find it all around you, even in the indoor pool. The 'continental' breakfast included a hot entree -- I wouldn't call it continental. The parking lot (nominal fee) was convenient, and we enjoyed the location. It will probably be the only place I'll ever stay that has a view of San Francisco from the bathroom window. A practical note: there is a coin-operated washer and dryer.

Warning: no smoking, no television -- all advantages from my point of view

Berkeley City Club is unlike any hotel you've ever seen. In fact, from street level, you would be hard-pressed to figure out that it actually is a hotel! Built in 1925, it is an architectural marvel. The vaulted ceilings on the main floor, and the perfectly preserved period pool, make it worth the price of admission. It is a block and a half from UC Berkeley, so if you are there on University business, you can't miss.

Downsides: some of the rooms are very small. I was initially given a room that didn't even have a small desk, just a bed and bathroom. I was given a larger, very attractive mini-suite with a sitting area with tastefully chosen furniture, but had to pay an extra $25 for it. (Worth it!). The rooms overlooking Durant can be quite noisy, expecially on the weekends. But as there is no AC, you will want to open the windows (no screens on windows, though!).

Al in all: if you want to stay in a one-of-a-kind architectural marvel and are ready to forego some standard hotel amenities, this is definitely worth it. If on the other hand you can't be without a TV, on-premises gym, or room service, then walk on by.

We recently stayed in the Berkeley City Club. When we opened the door to our room, we found that it was sweltering. So we opened the window. Surprise!!! There was no screen and no mechanism to keep the window open. Just a window lock and a hinge, so that the window would occasionally be blown shut by the wind with a huge kabang that woke us up repeatedly all through the night. Finally, my wife thought to put a hotel towel into the window frame, so the hugely loud kabang became a slightly milder kabang. If we closed the window the room was soon sweltering again. We got very little sleep.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2009

I just returned form a week's stay at the Berkeley City Club. I adored it. I have to say, it really made my trip. The location is perfect: a block from UC's campus, the Berkeley art museum, and the Pacific Film Archives, close to many good restaurants and three movie theaters, and a 10-15 minute walk to the BART station. The building is magnificent, built by Julia Morgan in 1929. My room was gorgeous: on the 5th floor, it had a great view looking out to the bay. The room itself was charming: first a little foyer, with a large closet with built-in cupboards (so old-fashioned), and the bathroom (tiled and sparkling clean with nice towels and a hair dryer), then the bedroom, with another large, lighted closet. The room was smallish by modern boutique hotel standards, but then you are not really paying a boutique hotel price, and the huge, crank-out window, large closets, and high ceiling kept it feeling spacious. There is no TV but that was fine by me. I listened to BBC on the local public radio station and used my laptop, and yes they do have WiFi in the rooms now. The bed was luxurious and I seriously loved climbing in it at the end of a long day of work & walking around town. There was some street noise but at least the block it's on is dominated by churches. Being this close to campus, it could be much worse (and a few blocks up Durant the vibe is decidedly noisier).

Free breakfast is served in a gorgeous dining room. There's a decent selection of yogurt, granola, and cereal, and store-bought breads to toast yourself. I had heard that the food could be spotty (I never was entirely clear on the situation with their dining room, but I think they do serve lunch), so I politely declined the eggs benedict, but they were always happy to just make me a couple of eggs, and the omelet I had the first morning was just fine. The weak spot was the coffee, which always got too cold too fast in the smallish coffee cups.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's a bit old-fashioned (right down to a certain musty smell that I associate with old Persian rugs, and which I quite like), and the lack of TV will be a deal-breaker to some. But if you want an affordable place with a lot of beauty and personality, it's a great choice. Oh, and the indoor pool is really special. I wish I had had more chances to swim in it.

As a comparison, I did spend one night at the nearby Hotel Durant, which was also very nice, but significantly pricier.
