“World Class Venue”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I feel so lucky to live so close and be able to see the remarkable, world-class actors, productions and directors here on a small stage. Over the years I've sat in the last row, front row and inbetween. The two stages are so small, that it's always a close, intimate experience. Musicals, dramas, comedies, repertory, new. This is really an amazing jewel.

“Intimate theater”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Berkeley Rep presents some of the Bay Area's most exciting, best produced theater. The two venues, next door to each other, bring sets and actors close, and sight lines are superb. This is regional theater that compares well in acting, direction, and staging with any productions anywhere.

“One of the nation's great regional theatres”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

I've watched Berkeley Rep grow over more than 40 years from a local hole in the wall to a regional legend in live stage. The selection of plays every season is very diverse, the performances highly professional, sometimes even featuring Broadway stars. Or, going the other way, original plays debut here and then migrate to New York. Prices are reasonable and the theatres are very intimate performance spaces. OK, maybe a little too intimate if you like generous seating because the stages are shoehorned into very little real estate. But to me a little mild discomfort more than makes up for the quality of the performances. We go whenever we can.

“Terrific local theater with stellar actors”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

Centrally located, architectually pleasing and with a good cafe and a very pleasant outdoor courtyard for intermissions, Berkley Rep is in that top tier of regional theaters exemplified by the Guthrie in Minneapolis. We were delighted to see Stephen Epp star in Dario Fo's Accidental Death of An Anarchist and it was hysterical, touching, sad, thought-provoking, and rollicking with slapstick and silliness--all in the same play. The acoustics were very good and we loved our seats in the center of the first row of the mezzanine. This was just a phenomenally good afternoon at the theater--truly memorable and intensely satisfying and entertaining. The Guthrie, the Long Wharf--anywhere in the West End for that matter--none of those superb venues have anything up on the Berkeley Rep.
