Visit the Gothic-Moorish style Berkeley City Club on Durant to appreciate the prodigious talents of architect Julia Morgan then dine at Julia's restaurant on the 2nd floor (opened in December 2012). Waiter Scott recommended the cold tomato soup (on the special menu) and the grilled Monterrey squid. Both were excellent. The coffee afterwards may be the best we've ever had at a restaurant. Service was top-notch, background music didn't intrude, and the ambience evoked another era (the building dates to the late Twenties). Highly recommended.

Was out looking at the Julia Morgan architecture at the Berkeley Community Cub an saw the restaurant. Stumbled onto one of the best meals of my life.

Squid over lentils---yum. Beet salad with an unusual dressing---unbelievable, Tomato soup chilled--over the top. Dessert---best coffee and dessert yet ever.

Keep up the good work and we'll be back. The service was outstanding---Scott (Tony). This gentleman helped us get to our next engagement by hand drawing a map. So appreciated.

Overall good friendly vibe. Not pretentious in the least. Very traditional Moorish/Gothic Julia Morgan decor.

Frankly, I've lost touch with the details of the meal, but it wasn't up to my previous experiences there. I had invited four friends, and no one commented on the meal--a sign that it generally was not up to snuff. Sorry, Julia's.

I have lived in Berkeley for a very long time, and had no idea this place was there. I had been in the Berkeley City Club once before years ago, and it is a bit of California history in itself. But the restaurant was a real surprise; elegant, quiet, and the food and service were really lovely. We went with friends who are a bit hard to please, and even they were delighted by Julia's. Starters of burrata with spring vegetables (favas and asparagus) and a velvety duck liver mousse. Gnocchi that were light and flavorful. Good wine list. I look forward to going back and taking friends with us to enjoy an unusual experience.

The space is elegant, in the beautiful Julia Morgan designed Berkeley City Club, with service that matched. We started with the butter lettuce salad and the corn chowder; both were excellent. The rolls were hot from the oven (and the basket was graciously refilled after we ate them all.) The halibut was modest in size but perfectly prepared; the pork chop was huge, a bit salty for my taste, but excellent (we really didn't need the side dish of grilled asparagus.) The house wines were only $22 per bottle, and the Chardonnay was very good.
