You know it's a good sign, when there are lots of tables of Indian people eating at the same Indian restaurant you have reservations for : ) Especially in a town with a lot of Indian restaurants! The food here was really good and there were quite a few things we have not seen elsewhere at Indian restaurants, which made the experience a little more of an adventure. An adventure that didn't disappoint. It was also really nice to have the choice of some interesting desserts like cardamon gelato and kulfi ( super rich but yummy ). Service was very attentive as well, so needless to say, we'll be back!

Sorry, Ajanta I really, really wanted to love you too but I am just not getting what the fuss is about! We first visited because of the positive reviews with a group of 8 and all decided it was a very average experience. Bought the family back for a second try in case you were having an off night the first time and the result was the same...bland, watery, uninspiring food, dull in both taste and appearance. The food is not bad, it's just completely lacking in inspiration and personality. Indian food to me should be big and bold, colorful and full of taste, as much a delight for the eyes as your taste buds. It does not have to be "hot and spicy" but it does have to be full of spices and taste. Ajanta does give you a choice of how spicy you want your dish to be prepared but this should not affect the flavor of the dish - "Mild" cooked dishes should still have all the spices and fragrances of that dish just without the "punch". With a group of 8 and then a group of 6, I think we ordered a fair cross-section of things on the menu in both hot and mild preparations, yet the dishes all looked the same shade of dull brown and tasted so similar to each other it felt like they have a huge stockpot of basic curry and they just throw in a couple of spoons of different ingredients to make the different dishes on the menu. The food just didn't taste freshly prepared from scratch - especially the spinach dish they put on every plate - if that isn't out of a tin then they need to fire the chef that is making it taste as if it was!
I don't know if this restaurant has always been this way or has sat on it's laurels once it established a name for itself but I can see no justification for this restaurant's reputation as "the best curry restaurant" in Berkeley - or in the Bay Area as some reviews have claimed. Come on now people of Berkeley, either there are a lot of you who have never tasted great Indian food or the rest of the restaurants must be very poor if this is truly the best Berkeley has to offer.

I visited Ajanta twice for dinner with 2 different sets of friends. The first night (my first visit ever to the restaurant), I arrived with 2 friends. We were pleased to see the restaurant busy even on a Tuesday night and were seated at a quiet table. We proceeded to order some appetizers (Tandoori scallops, veg pakora) and entrees (fish and lamb dishes). You are given a choice (from 1-5) of how spicy you would like your food. The service was friendly and gracious. Everything tasted fresh and delicious with the flavor of individual ingredients and spices coming through - some of the best Indian food any of us had had. The bill was very reasonable given the quality of the meal. The second night, I went back with a couple of other friends and because it was late, we ordered the tasting menu. Overall the food was still very good - the Lamb Rib Chops were exceptional. The main problem was that some of the food did not seem as fresh and may have been plated in advance. The desserts were only so-so. The bill was around 35% higher than the previous night. In sum, a great place, but don't order the tasting menu.
