“Great Salads and Great Breakfast/Brunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

This is a fun place to meet friends for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. I enjoy the fresh green/Chevre salads. The bread here is fabulous! The brie, bagette sandwiches with a little heated tomatoe are yummy. Pancakes with Creme Fraise are great! Enjoy...busy. No reservations on weekends so be prepared for a wait or sign in and do something else like shop at the Monterey Market while waiting!

“Little delicious French Secret !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2014 via mobile

La Note - a little quaint french inspired restaurant sits on busy shattuck avenue. Upon entering, you walk into a main dining hall but on a nice summer day ask to be seated in the back. That was the best- we felt like we were in a little French secret garden with umbrellas and little glasses of water and a small lemon filled pitcher of cold water. Very quaint and easy feel. We had the special of the day - grilled sausage with red sweetened peppers and this delicious sauce on a baguette on a bed of salad lightly dressed. Perfect choice so two people can split it! We also had the French toast with dipped in orange batter - yummy choice as well! If you're coming for brunch - come hungry! Servings are reasonably big! As for parking- there are street metered parking - be patient since this stretch of shattuck is a busy one !
Delicious!

“Best Breakfast Around”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

Here's the good and the bad. OMG how do they make the ham, cheese and eggs so tasty. We ask that the omelette be turned into a scramble and paid for the updrade of a toasted baguette instead of whatever typically comes with the meal. My daughter and I splt this meal which is more than enough for the 2 of us. They won't split it in the kitchen when we ask so we divide it ourselves when it arrives with the country potatoes that are served with whole cloves of cooked garlic and onion. They have what tastes like homemade berry jam in little glass pots on the table that is too die for that we spead on the toasted baquette. We drive from Walnut Creek into Berkeley for this breakfast because it is so good.

Everybody agrees great French Roast coffee too!

Decorated so adorable in the French fashion looks like Pierre Deux with hanging baskets and Quimper style bowls and plates decorating the dining area. Hardwood floors with cute little chairs. Big people beware. The tables are kinda cramped and close together and we ( party of 5) were seated at a table barely large enough for 2. But for us it was worth it because the food is so good. It you sleep in late enough you can ask for the outdoor patio dining which is not open until 9 or 9:30.

The patio garden area is adorable.

The lines and wait are long if you do not arrive early enough. Even at 8:30 on a Saturday morning we waited 20 minutes for a table too small to seat the 5 of us but we huddled like bees around honey and took what they gave us.

We did not recognize any of the usual servers. They used to be all female. On this day it seems they were mostly male which we had never seen before. The meal that the server did not put in with our order belonged to the only child in our group who was beyond hungry by the time the food arrived. By the time childs reordered meal arrived after adults had finished eatting the pancake showed up with cream fraiche which child totally dismissed as disgusting. So we had to ask for a PLAIN child friendly pancake to be reordered. Wait some more, child was in tears. So either bring some snacks for hungry children or read the menu carefully regarding garnish that might accompany food intended for children with an unsophisticated palette. In all fairness to the mishap childs meal and all beverages for the party of 5 were compted. Too bad only one of us ordered a Mimosa. We feel the restaurant handled the mishap appropriately.

Had to ask for coffee refills/warmups. They could use one extra person that does nothing but refilling up coffee cups on busy week end mornings.

For adults we all loved the food and the general atmosphere!!!!!! More like dining in somebody's french cottage.

We are regulars. All other visits there have been no mishaps with ordering.

“Just Not That Good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

La Note has enjoyed great success since it opened many years ago. This Berkeley French-style bistro is just that, French-style -- NOT authentically French and not that good. While the menu includes a number of French food standards, their ingredients are neither particularly fresh nor are the dishes well executed. For example, beginning with the bread and butter: The bread was slightly stale and the butter tasted of refrigerator burn. The Salade Nicoise was full of sandy, slightly wilted greens and a very minimum amount of additional ingredients. I had to get to the bottom of the bowl to find the equivalent of three tablespoons of shredded canned tuna. As well, the spinach salad was equally disappointing -- not sandy, but very salty greens. The egg dish was not fresh tasting, either. They must have used the same bad butter and an over-used fry pan, because the eggs had picked up a a slightly meaty flavor. The service is spotty. I have been to La Note twice in the past month because of business lunches, and on both occasions the service was slow and neglectful. Finally, the restaurant is always packed at lunch and the ventilation is poor. So, if you must go there wear layers, and make sure you aren't looking for a quiet dining experience. I have a memory of La Note being so much better once upon a time. Frankly, I just don't think they care anymore. Apparently, people keep coming for sandy lettuce and bad eggs and salty soup, anyway. There are so many better restaurants in Berkeley, some just a few blocks away. I recommend that you steer clear of La Note and enjoy some of the excellent food that Berkeley has to offer at other establishments.

“Go To Brunch”

La Note was my go to brunch spot for my four years at Cal. A popular spot for both residents students and professors.
