Stayed here for several nights when visiting our daughter at Cal. I am very fond of Hotel Shattuck Plaza but decided to give the Durant a try. The lobby is lovely and steeped in Cal history. There is a small restaurant with cozy window alcoves and good food and service. We had breakfast there and it was delicious. The bar attracts a younger crowd (which, given its proximity to the campus, makes sense) and is a bit too noisy for conversation but a good place to watch the game. BEST feature is the location, which is excellent. My daughter found it much easier to meet me in between classes than when we were at the Shattuck. All in all, I prefer the Shattuck for the "grown up" vibe and the gorgeous bar and dining room, but if you are looking to interface with the events on campus the Durant is a better bet.

Dear Melissa,

Congrats by the way as your daughter is at a great school during her college years. We appreciate you staying with us and the fact that it was easy between her classes to meet you is fantastic. Our location is definitely unbeatable. Something new is we are giving enhancements to our hotel which includes our restaurant. We will be making some great physical changes and updating as well. Next time you come back, we hope you will get to experience this? Until then, best regards.

This hotel is very well located for a visit to U Cal Berkeley. Staff was efficient and reasonably friendly. Did think it was a bit strange that the bottled water, which was put well away from the "pay" items in the room were actually also being sold for $5.50 each. Also there was a charge to print anything and also if you needed to use the lobby computer for more than 15 mins. For the price we paid, we were surprised at the apparent push for additional revenue.

Dear lettuceleaf,

We thank you for giving our leadership team some great feedback on your observations about potentially nickel and diming. We treat that very seriously and never want to have that type of perception. We are in the process of making some of these changes to ensure value on top of a great experience is always received. This comment will not be ignored and we again appreciate your business.

Warm regards,

Situated right across Cal Berkeley, close to many restaurants and shops and service was decent and they allow pets, which we have, however being an old historical hotel I was disappointed with the decor, it was more like a dorm room instead of befitting a hotel with good strong bones and historical feel. I wish someone with vision could save this hotel and give it a makeover it deserves!! Unfortunately if this was done prices would be outrageous. Decent stay if not a wow.

Dear Surfrider,

We thank you for taking a trip to Berkeley and staying at the Hotel Durant. We certainly take pride with aligning our decor with the college theme however one could see that as not the best approach. We typically hear great remarks about this but we understand the hotel historic element too as that is a great suggestion for us to review. Pet or no pet, we welcome all and we are very hopeful you will stay with us when you are up from L.A. again?

Warm regards,

We spent 1 night here while picking up our kids from Cal camp. While the location to campus was great as was the service, I felt like I was staying in a haunted hotel from yesteryear. The hotel has not been updates since the 60's and was relatively noisy. The beds were uncomfortable - it was like staying in an upperclassman dorm room. While it did the job for 1 night, it's unlikely that we would stay here again.

Dear Colleen,

First and foremost, congratulations on being a CAL parent. It's a tremendous University and we're lucky to be so close to the campus. In regards to our location and great service comments we certainly appreciate the kind words. We went thru a mini-renovation this last year and a major renovation a few years ago so we can assure you there's been many renovations since the 60's. Being a hotel with an entrance, lobby and elevators, we can proudly say we are nowhere close to being a motel. I hope this helps and we always welcome you back next time you are here in Berkeley to see your son/daughter or just visiting?

Best-

The hotel is a little dated (1960s) but is really not too bad. I stayed here while in a conference in SF. It was about 50% less than staying in the city. Taking the BART system gets you downtown in about 20 minutes. It is a good walk from the station to the hotel though. About 10 blocks. If you have a business trip in SF you can save a ton of $$$ by using BART that runs right from the airport and staying in Berkeley. It's kind of a fun place to stay with tons of places to eat. The Shattuck Plaza may be a better alternative since that is a block from station and about same caliper.

Dear NewtonMaTraveler,

The Hotel Durant appreciates and understands the great benefits to staying in Berkeley and the positives in doing this even when you need to be in San Francisco. We see hundreds of guests making the same decision as San Francisco has become outrageously expensive. We are a 10min walk to the station but overall a quick experience. We certainly hope to see you in the future and thanks again!

Warm regards

Unbeatable location - right on campus and easy walk to shops and restaurants and everything.

Room - a bit small but with good amenities, bathroom is a bit too small though. Like the cute/quaint decor. Clean.

Sometimes can be a little noisy at night.

Free wifi a plus.

The Durant hotel is located on walking distance to the Berkeley university campus. The hotel is a bit worn down and the furniture in my room was crammed into the room. The bed was ok, the breakfast ok, the staff helpful, but the general impression was an old worn down and not totally clean hotel.
