“Decent and convenient”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Not the most fancy place in town, but pretty convenient for UC Berkeley access. Parking is usually pretty easy, rooms clean, spacious, and has most things needed for the traveler. Not too noisy even with a street view room, but watch out for football days!

I really have a soft spot for this hotel. My family and I stayed here the second week of July for an event on the UC campus. As most of the reviews point out, the location of Hotel Durant is ideal. If you decide to stay here, you'll find yourself overwhelmed by the plethora of restaurants, used book/record stores, and general "buzz" that streams from the Cal campus.

We stayed in the double room located on the north-west corner of the 6th floor (The "Graduate" Level). My impression is that the 6th floor is worth the few extra bucks. Do it. We had a beautiful view of San Francisco to the west, as well as a tranquil shot of the Cal Campus to the north. All of the rooms on the 6th floor are named after a famous Berkeley alum, and there was a portrait of our room's namesake on our wall. In our case, we stayed in the "Julia Morgan". We had some fun researching Ms. Morgan!

Our room was large. Comfortable. Cool. Well appointed. There was even an old Cal yearbook on our coffee table. The bathroom was spotless and roomy.

If you stay here, take some time to look through the lobby. There are some fun and interesting objects for you to find (A burnt bra, an old flyer to see Jefferson Airplane in Berkeley, protest advertisements, etc.) This place has character...in a good way.

I will absolutely come back to Hotel Durant.

Room Tip: The 6th floor is worth the extra charge (Breakfast, wine, and beautiful views included!)

Dear Nalu,

What a great review on the Hotel Durant. We certainly agree on many of your comments as the 6th floor is definitely worth the addl. dollars spent and the view West is truly spectacular. Theres nothing like looking at the Bay and San Francisco while in your room. We are always attempting to strike a cord with our guests and attach ourselves to the history of Berkeley and the UC and it sounds like it did with you?

We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Durant. Loved the 60's/70's inspired decor in the lobby and in the rooms. We had plenty of space for our group of 6 in our adjoining rooms. Great location next to the Berkley campus and just a few blocks from Telegraph Ave with restaurants and shopping. We especially appreciated the helpful and friendly staff. They had great suggestions for restaurants and activities in the area.

Dear Shawn B,

We thank you for spending time with us at The Hotel Durant. We know you traveled a long way to get here from Minnesota and appreciate your business. We are very cognisant of our location and the influence of Berkeley during the 1960's and 1970's as you noticed our lobby, hallways and rooms certainly connect with that. That UC and historical connection will always resonate with our hotel. Thanks for commenting on our great service as we take many steps to ensure all of our guests are well taken care of and we're delighted you experienced this.

Warm regards,

We stayed at the Durant for over a week while I was on university business. The hotel is in a perfect location for visiting academics, though the room itself wasn't big enough to settle into a working routine. We had a very quiet room in the back of the hotel, overlooking the parking lot, which was fine. There are plenty of dining options within walking distance (and a Peets in The Den on Channing), and there is usually always parking available in the self-park lot. This is a good Berkeley option, but the rooms are better suited to parties of two than to parties of four.

Room Tip: It's probably quieter on the Channing side, rather than the Durant side.

Dear Nipedwar,

We want to say thank you for staying at the Hotel Durant during your time while visiting at UC Cal Berkeley. We know you have man choices while in the Bay Area and we appreciate your business. We thank you for commenting on our tremendous location, surrounded by great eateries such as Henrys at our own hotel and the ease of parking. I could not agree with you more.

Warm regards,

Stayed here when we went to see a concert at the Greek Theater. Easy walking distance to the venue. A little pricey for a room, the room was clean and not to small. Perfect for 2 people. You can hear people through the bathroom vent. When we arrived we were told we could self park @ $16 a day. When we checked in we asked for the window parking pass for self park and were told the lot was full, really because the doorman told us we could park there and there were 3- open spaces. The desk clerk gave us the pass as he could tell I was irritated. Happy hour in Henrys was nice, food was ok, but nothing to rave about. Tried to get an after concert drink at henry's and they had no coffee and the register was down, we moved on and got a coffee next door at a nice pastry shop.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front of the hotel don't have a great view unless you like to see garbage strew...

Here is a graph of the shower temperature over time.___/\/\__/^^^^^\___/\___The window was about as far from noise proof as you can get. The room was tiny as well, even smaller than NYC and Singapore hotels. The two redeeming qualities for The Durant - incredibly helpful staff and prime location. Replace the shower and windows and 4 or 5*, easily.

Stayed here for a week while visiting our son in Berkeley. Very nice with an excellent location. We were only 2 blocks from shopping on Telegraph Ave. & very close to our son's apartment. You will never go hungry in Berkeley. However, our room was very small. No closet, not enough hangers and no dresser. The only drawers were in the small fridge & bar area & one bedside stand. My husband & I were falling over each other to maneuver. The entire hotel was very pretty & very clean. There is a restaurant connected to the hotel, but very pricey. The room included a continental breakfast that consisted of juice, coffee, tea & 2 small pastries. Pastries were dry & obviously from packaged pastries. The staff was excellent, helpful & very nice. Good location for bus service. We only had coffee (not decaf) for 2 days. They kept running out. We liked staying here for the location, but may try someplace else next time.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front of the hotel had great views of Berkeley campus tower & hills. Request the 5...

Dear Judy G,

We truly appreciate your you and your family staying with us for a week this last month. We are delighted you loved our location and cleanliness of our hotel. In regards to the space in the room, we understand your concerns and try to develop and purchase a set-up that is very space conscience but we can always do better. We hope our restaurant prices did not deter or hinder the taste or overall dining experience? We are very sensitive to our pricing in the market to ensure we offer a competitive price compared to similar style restaurants. With that said, we absolutely hope and wish to see you again next time you are in Berkley. In fact, please email mmartini@hoteldurant.com to find out about a NEW "Cal Parents" Club we are starting for great discounts and promotions most of the year while you visit your son.
