Stayed at Mosaic Dec 29 - Jan 3rd, 2009 after reading several positive reviews on Trip Advisor. This is a very long review so sit tight and enjoy.
At first we were hesitant as we tend to stay at franchised hotels i.e. Sheraton, Hilton, Marriott etc. was attracted to the Mosaic b/c of the positive reviews on Trip Advisor, its proximity to Rodeo, Canon, Wilshire area, and the great deal that we were offered when we called the hotel after American Express had recommended the hotel to us. We ended up paying USD320 (plus tax) for 5 nights which included breakfast (many great breakfast options to choose from) with the 5th night free - can't beat that in Beverly Hills. We only ate breakfast at the hotel which I can say we enjoyed all week (tried different breakfast options every morning since it was included in our price). I read some reviews that the lunch/dinner was not so great, so can't comment as we only ate breakfast, but based on that I can't imagine lunch/dinner not tasting good but whatever...
We arrived and realized its a boutique hotel with only 49 rooms which is nice, we checked in with ease, was helped to our room by Steve the doorman that night, the room itself was a decent size, king size bed, with 2 large chairs to sit on, large flatscreen TV, the washroom had marble floor/counter, shower was waterfall style which we really liked. The staff is excellent, very friendly, helpful, all the guys - Steve, Ben, Andrew, Collin, made our stay very pleasant. They have a complimentary shuttle service (which is a four door mercedes) and will drop you off and pick up within a 3 miles radius, no charge off course but we would tip $3-$5 depending on how far they would drop us. Taxi would cost more than double to those same distances and these guys offer the service for free!!! We have stayed in many hotels in 2008 I calculated I stayed in 7 different hotels averaging 3 nights per hotel (for both work and pleasure) and not one offered the free shuttle service - - so you got to give these guys credit for thinking outside the box. Again, all the guys were helpful and gave good tips on the city, so talk to them and they will be very helpful I guarantee that..
The location is great, 10 min walk to rodeo which is great for shopping, canon where all the nice restaurants are, walk along wilshire is nice all the high end stores, people driving nothing but BMWs, Mercedes and Lexus, etc. At the corner of Santa Monica / Wilshire (approx 5 mins walk from the hotel) is a large Starbucks which we found near the end of our trip so for all you SB lovers its very close.
On the last night we decided to catch a Laker game, one of the guys researched on the best and most efficient way to get to the game so he ended up dropping us off at the bus stop (which is about a 7 minute walk) to take the 728 bus to Figuaro (along Olympic Blvd), approx 40 mins ride and drops you off right in front of the Staples Centre for $1.25 per person. We took a taxi home after the game b/c you never know LA at night which costed us $37 (with tip). So the fact that they helped me save another $40 was appreciated as I was prepared to pay for taxi both ways.
We recommend doing the Starline (hope on / hope off) double decker bus ride for one day which costs $30 per person (we saw and did the same concept in Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain). The hotel guys will drop you off and pick you up at the bus pick up point near the post office. Take the tour around the city to see BH, Hollywood, West Hollywood, you learn lots and see lots. Main stops are the Chinese Theatre (walk of fame, kodak, etc) and Farmers market / Grove, nice shops and restaurants.
So all in all very nice stay, at a nice small hotel with pleasant staff in a great location at a vey reasonable price. I read some reviews about the rooms being small, and staff not helpful, I disagree, but hey if you want top-notch triple A service then go the Montage (approx. $700 per night) or the Wilshire b/c for $300 a night in Beverly Hills its way worth it to stay at the Mosaic....
