So, before I go into details, let's set some context: it's a motel in a very remote area where lodging is scarce during high climbing season. Anywhere else, this would be a 1-star review.

PROS:

- clean room, looks like it was renovated
- decent beds and linen
- good location
- Teachings of Buddha instead of Bible - kind of cool, just for a change

CONS:

- dark (as in, no light!) shower space with broken showerhead
- stuffy room, only source of air is AC (more on that below)
- deafening loud AC! I mean, really. So noisy you have to speak up to talk over it!
- breakfast so bad that I wish they didn't include it. I know "continental breakfast" means "barely any food: cereal, toast, egg and maybe some fruit", but in Elms it is cereal, toast... and that's it! We didn't even waste our time there and went out for breakfast
- $95 for a double room?!..

So overall, this is a pretty sad place. That said, if you're looking for lodging during high season, you probably realized already that there's not much to choose from, and it's all expensive...

Cute place, quaint even, but for $90 a night I expect to sleep. The air conditioning in room 6 was so loud, that sleep was impossible!! & at 80* at 9pm, the air needed to be on. I finally put the pillow over my head to muffle some of the noise. When you can't sleep you begin to notice everything wrong with the room, sadly. Past reviews have mentioned refurbishing & you can tell it's been an owner redo-peeling texture tape in the bathroom-paint that looks like chicken pox too, like I said, quaint. After a night of NOT sleeping we were not able to face a breakfast of 2 dry cereals & two loafs of bread. I hope the other rooms are better & that this was just an anomaly. I mentioned to my husband that this room would not be good when it's cold, because it's the same unit as the ir conditioning. Hope that helps someone-happy trails!

It is definitely not a Best Western or modern chain motel. It was probably built in the 1940s or 1950s, so expect the rooms to be relatively small. Some parts of the room we stayed in were recently renovated and other parts were probably renovated a few years ago. I believe that there are typically four units to a building and all are one story with a bit of lawn, so you just may have some interaction with fellow travelers.

So, it's a bit dated, but relatively inexpensive, and perfectly fine a night or two, especially if you want to take a break from the typical modern two or three story motel.

Really good value motel, perfectly adequate for an overnighter and cheaper than the motels on the main drag, just a very short walk to really nice friendly town, recommend Whiskey Creek Inc to eat, good food, nice people and do NOT miss Schat's Bakery !

It's alright for one night, but it's not incredibly clean, rooms are old and dusty. Breakfast is fine and the breakfast room is clean.
A bit over-priced.
Given that this is a motel in a small town in a half abandoned valley, I won't be too harsh. Plus there are a few decent places to eat within walking distance and a McDonald's just round the corner.

Room Tip: We had room #1, I hope it isn't the best room...

Stayed at The Elms on a spring Thursday evening for $59.99 plus tax = $67.15, a good rate in Bishop CA. It is a couple of blocks off the main drag, highway 395, quiet and a very short walking distance to most restaurants and shops in "downtown" Bishop. The Elms is a '50's style cottages motel with separate, "duplex" cottages, not just a string of rooms. Very retro. Your parking place is marked just in front of or next to your cottage. For those with families, there is no swimming pool. There is a grassy park-like area in the back with bbqs, patio tables with umbrellas and chairs.

The rooms and baths are clean and well kept, the bed and pillows were comfortable. Shower only type bath which is a '50s style tiled large shower. The showerhead on my shower needed to be replaced as most of the holes in the head were stopped up due to calcium build-up. Before I left, I told the manager, Harry, that this needed to be replaced (cottage room #4). You may want to check the showerhead flow upon entering your room. There is an older type tube tv with cable & a coffeemaker in each room. No micro or refrigerator in rooms, though there is a full size freezer next to the ice machine (and fish cleaning area with sink) that all guests can use. I used it to refreeze my two blue ice cooler things. There were two large windows with screens in the cottage as well as another window with a screen in the bath which provided great cross ventilation. The rooms also have air conditioning.

Continental breakfast consisting of coffee, orange juice and milk, two types of cereal (raisin bran & corn flakes this day), muffins, bagels & bread for toast.is available in the morning. I found The Elms to be a pleasant step back in time and I would definitely stay again.

Bishop has been a problem town for us to find a good place to stay. We've tried Creek Side Inn, Comfort Inn, Vagabond, The Trees...they each had problems. This time, however, we struck gold when we found The Elms. Located off the main street, this is a 1940's motel that has been updated and perfectly maintained. The manager told us that generations of families have returned here since the 40's. Rather than a row of little rooms, The Elms feels like a small village, that includes mostly duplexes. There's also a large grassy area with tables and chairs. Plus, there's even shade under an elm tree.
I recommend units 14,15 and 19.
The breakfast is nothing special.
Harry, the manager is service oriented and runs a very good place.
