“No Fire Alarm or Sprinkler during Fire- Family barely made it out”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

My family has stayed at the Vagabond Inn at Bishop so I was shocked and surprised to learn that during their recent fire neither the fire alarm or sprinklers were activated. My friends visiting from Brussels barely made it out alive during their "stay" at Vagabond Inn Bishop. At approx 8:30am the power went out. They checked the light switch, looked out the window and saw smoke and flames, in fact the room next door was on fire. There were no alarms, no sprinklers, no staff alerting them to get out in fact the staff just looked at them from below. They have two children who had to run through a wall of smoke to escape. They lost half of their luggage. As soon as they departed the hotel their room was engulfed in flames and the roof collapsed. They went to the hospital and now have a $2,000 hospital bill. They are in shock. It's a travesty that Vagabond did not meet the standard fire codes and how this emergency was handled.

Dear nevadacity,

I am very sorry that you were in a section of the hotel where there was an unfortunate incident. Kindly email me at Niral@attunehospitality.com and I can certainly assist your family with their hospital bill and also their luggage that was lost in the fire. When the building was originally built, it did meet all the fire codes and standards at that time and when we rebuild again, it will also meet all the current, existing fire codes and standards. Again, I am very sorry that you and your family had to experience the fire at our hotel.

Unfortunately, the Vagabond suffered severe damage on August 14, and a significant amount of the hotel was destroyed. Hopefully rebuilding will be able to start very soon, and the hotel will again be up and running.

Dear Inyogirl,

We are equally devastated by the fire. We are currently working diligently with the city and the builders to get the hotel back up and running. We anticipate that about half of the hotel will be back in operations within a month. We anticipate that the other half of the hotel will be back in operations prior to next summer.

It won't blow you away but I found the Vagabond to be a very nice place and definitely one of the better stays in Bishop. I would stay here again the next time I am in town. The room had a microwave and a decent sized mini-fridge (see pics). The decor was a little worn and dated but I'm not looking for leading edge fashion when I'm staying at a hotel I just want it to be comfortable. They do have a swimming pool, a fish cleaning area, and an outside bbq area. For the price you can't go wrong staying here. There are also several places to eat within walking distance.

Quoted three different rates on line. Called to check for correct rate and could not understand the person who answered the phone. Finally he quoted me yet another rate. Decided not to make a reservation there. Called comfort inn and got a rate 20 dollars cheaper for same accommodations.

We just needed somewhere to stay between Zion National Park and San Francisco: we wanted to stay somewhere close to Yosemite too.
It was good for one night. The pool was enjoyable and the place is on the main drag, so close to food places. The TV in the room is a bit old, but whatever.

When we come up to bishop several times a year to go fishing we are greatly satisfied with the clean rooms and friendly hospitality. Always very helpful with our questions about the area. In walking distance to several eateries. We don't stay anywhere else when we visit Bishop/ Mammoth.
Sincerely- T. & G. Reid

Room Tip: Everyone we've stayed in has been nice.

It's a motel, period. Nothing fancy, but it was clean.
The first room we were given did not have a good air conditioner. It sounded like a jet taking off and would not get cold. We asked to change rooms and were given one with a working AC.

The bed was too soft and the pillows too thick to be comfortable. Room size was fine. We had a King bed and a table/chairs. There was a mini fridge and microwave.
The shower had one of those curtain rods which bows outward to keep the curtain from sticking to you and I do appreciate that but the shower head was so low on the wall that anyone over 5'8" will have to stoop to get under it.

For the price ($110++), I would expect a little more. We went out for breakfast because the free one was nothing but simple low quality carbs (breads, cereals, juice).
