“Beautiful, classy, relaxing”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful getaway here! A perfect way to relax. We swam in the great "adults only" pool (there are also family pools), played life-size chess, and drove right outside the resort to star gaze. We went during the off season so their main chef wasn't there and the menu was a bit lacking, but the food we had was good and the staff was great. We got back to our room after dinner and there was a cricket hidden in the rafters and the front desk immediately put us in a new room and brought us the new key.

Dear Sarah C,

Sounds like a wonderful getaway for you and your boyfriend! Life-size chess is definitely one of our most popular attractions, so glad you got to play! Regarding dining, we offer a more casual dining fare selection during summer months and re-open the upscale dining room, Butterfield Room, October 17th. Those darn crickets! I am glad our staff was able to relocate you. Hope to see you again soon!

My girlfriend and I stayed at La Casa Del Zorro when going to Borrego Springs for star gazing in July. The resort was great, rooms were big, clean, and comfortable.

When we got home after dinner but before leaving to look at stars (around 11:00pm), we discovered a cricket had gotten into the rafters of our room and was constantly buzzing. The front desk moved us to another room when we asked, without hesitation!

Room Tip: The second floor rooms have gorgeous, vaulted ceilings, while the first floor has patio access to th...

Dear Clay L,

I'm glad to hear that the annoying cricket did not interfere with your exceptional stargazing experience with us! It sounds like you stayed in one of our beautiful Deluxe Poolview rooms. Thank you for sharing your review with us. Come see us again!

The room was huge. Upstairs rooms are a little cheaper but they have amazing wood vaulted ceilings and a small balcony with enough room to sit and snack or enjoy the stars. Also equiped with 'real' wood burning firepaces for the winter nights. The decor was upper class with a little art thrown in. The bathroom was amazing. Wi-fi was better than the upper class chains that we frequent. They had individual connections for the upper and lower floors, sweet. There are a lot of pools and no bothersome 'pool hours' as long as you aren't bothering other guests. Which leads to other guests.....this place is so spread out that you may not see other people outside of the bar or restaurant.

Gor-don (if youve seen the AT&T adds you know what Im talking about) was a little stuffy on check in but everyone else was super friendly and attentive. When a call was made for a locked safe, someone was there within 5 minutes to open it.

The only downfall was the food. Not bad but just basic. It's not like there are a lot of dining options in the area so maybe they could spiff up the menu a little.

Make sure you bring drinks and snacks with you and an ice chest might be your best friend. It turns out that the fridge in the room was a cooler (never even heard of that) and things would take 24 hours or so to cool. The only markets are quite a drive so be prepared.

If you use Waze to get there know that the little white ghost will direct you through the back of the property and you'll have a heck of a time finding the lobby. But waving down a friendly worker in a cart will get you an escort to the front door.

I would love to return during the spring but don't know if DH will ablidge. He likes loud and crazy where I'm a relaxer bee.

Dear st0ked,

We are quite pleased to hear of your fantastic stay at La Casa del Zorro! It sounds like you had an awesome time enjoying our sparkling pools and amazing Deluxe Poolview rooms. I must say this is the first time I've been compared to Gor-don from the Sprint commercials, but I will admit that he has better hair than I do:). I am sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy our summer menu at the Fox Den. We offer a more casual menu in summer season along with our Blue-Plate Specials and Chef's Specials, and the Butterfield Room, our upscale dining venue, re-opens October 17th. In response to guest requests such as yours, we now offer light snacks for purchase at the Front Desk. There is a grocery store located just 10 minutes from the resort (Center Market).

Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful experience. We look forward to your return visit!

Dear Asad,

As you and I discussed at length during your check-out process, your package was, in fact, not booked as a breakfast package, as the confirmation, reservation history, and registration card with your signed initials clearly show that you reserved and checked-in at the AAA rate. We are happy to change rates and packages if your confirmation indicates differently, however no proof of inaccuracies was submitted, and the package rate would have actually worked out to be more expensive for you than the AAA rate. It is good to hear that you enjoyed the rest of your stay, and we encourage you to reserve the breakfast package with us during your next visit.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Zorro. Tim was extremely courteous and helpful prior and during our stay. The grounds, pools, and especially our large upstairs deluxe double bed room was impressive, definitely a highlight of our trip out to Borrego. A side note: come prepared when visiting Borrego, as there is literally nothing there, no simple luxuries like a 7-11 even. What it does offer is a majestic desert experience that the Zorro compliments in many ways. The dozens of sculptures strewn throughout the main roads of Borrego are worth the trip alone, a sight to behold. Don't expect Palm Springs, but do expect a first class experience at La Casa del Zorro. Thanks again to Tim for making us feel welcome at a first class desert resort.

Dear James S,

It was a true pleasure to meet you and your family during your recent visit! I am very glad to hear that your stay was a success. It sounds like your family was able to enjoy the lovely facilities that make La Casa del Zorro such a beautiful and special resort. While Borrego Springs does offer the necessities such as a grocery store, gas stations, and quaint local shops and restaurants, you are absolutely correct that it will never be confused with a bustling metropolis:). In response to guest requests, we now have late-night snacks available for purchase at the Front Desk since most stores close early. Thank you very much for your kind words and laudatory review of La Casa. We expectantly await your return!

For our stay, we reserved a 2 bedroom casita so we could have a private pool, but upon arrival the casita we were placed in was very warm in the 100 degree heat (and had a musty smell). It was clean, but definitely a little dated; not real inviting. The maintenance man tried to fix the a/c, but had no luck, so we had to move. We were shown another 2 bdrm casita, which happened to be nicer inside, but it only had a whirlpool, which was just too warm in the summer heat.

After that, we were shown the hotel rooms, and they were actually much nicer than the casita originally reserved. We ended up choosing a deluxe poolside room. It was very nice; with a beautiful bathroom, fireplace and a little patio. We'd thought we wanted a private pool which was why we reserved the casita, but the poolside room was a lot nicer, and the pool outside our room was much bigger to swim in, and not at all crowded when we were there. There were also very nice poolside cabanas available around the pool and beach balls in the pool, which was fun.

After going through negotiations at the front desk, they finally lowered our price to a reasonable one for the hotel room, and gave us some drink coupons for our trouble (however, we later found out the coupons were not useful for any "specialty" drinks on their summer menu. Like a lemon drop. Bummer.).
After finally settling in, we enjoyed the resort. But I'd definitely only reserve the hotel room again, at least until all the casitas are redone. And the casitas are much more expensive.
It is a nice, small resort, though with a restaurant that has quite a limited menu and a bar that's lovely, and should be a cozy hangout, but service doesn't quite live up to what it could be.

Room Tip: deluxe poolside rooms are nicest.

Dear Blossom,

We regret to hear that you were not satisfied with certain aspects of your stay. A/C problems with a room are never a good thing, so we are sorry you had to experience this upon arrival. Many guests find our Casitas the epitome of rustic desert style and love the privacy of their own pool, so we are sorry that you did not feel the same. We are very glad that you enjoyed your time in the Deluxe room, which we offered to you at a substantial discount along with the complimentary beverage coupons. We do feature a brand-new Summer menu in the Fox Den Bar & Cantina, and our upscale dining venue, Butterfield Room, will re-open October 17th. We are more than happy to further discuss your concerns regarding service, however it is unclear from your review what aspects of service our staff was lacking, as this was never brought to management's attention during your stay, and your review seems to indicate that our staff rapidly responded to your concerns.

We appreciate your choosing to stay with La Casa del Zorro, and we look forward to having you return to see us in the future!

Living in San Diego, our usual weekend trip is to Temecula, but we wanted to try something different. I would never have thought to go to Borrego Springs, but stumbled upon it on the web. I'm so glad we found it! We really had no idea what it was going to be like and were so pleasantly surprised! It was such a relaxing weekend enjoying the pool during the day and the restaurant/bar and live music at night. The property has perfectly landscaped grounds, incredibly friendly staff and amazing food. We stayed in a Deluxe room, but would love to come back with friends and try a casita. Looking forward to many more trips there.
