Had lovely time,Freda the lady that owns it couldn't do enough for us and our grandchildren.just bring your clothes, because she has everything in these holiday homes, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwasher,if she doesn't have it,you don't need it. Fantastic place, beautiful views, lovely garden, well worth a visit. Christine Mcculloch.

“A really good time once again”

Four couples have been meeting here for a weekend in spring for at least 10 years. We can thoroughly recommend Higher Gills. It's a working farm with lambing in progress. It is on the side of Pendle with great views across the valley. Great walks direct from the farm or close at hand with a good selection of pubs for lunch.
Freda and Darrell Pilkington are very attentive and helpful hosts. Have booked again for next year!

We had a wonderful week and enjoyed our stay in this well equipped apartment. Freda was a wonderful host and ensured we had everything that we needed. We hope to return for more nature, walks and life on the farm. Highly recommended.

“Ideal home from home”

This was our third visit to this secret corner of Lancashire, and we are already planning our fourth. It makes for a great British countryside holiday full of surprises and offering as wide a range of activities as you could wish for. When you are catering for a family group of mixed ages and interests I think this place is ideal. You can hire both the upstairs and downstairs apartments to fit everyone in and the dog can come too. The drive to the farm through pretty lanes, climbing higher onto the fell is a mini adventure in itself and the first glimpse of the farm nestling under the shadow of Pendle hill is very "Wuthering Heights". The apartments themselves are super warm with lots of hot water and comfortably furnished with a well equipped kitchen. There is excellent wifi and a good phone signal. There are toys for the children, a travel cot and fun touches themed around farm animals. The beds are really comfy with soft bedding to sink into. Outside is a bright modern utility area with washer (detergent provided) and dryer. There is also an outside tap with brushes for your boots, bike and dog. For my 94 year old mum, it is all on one level, with no hidden steps or slopes. She can sit and enjoy the expansive views across the valley to the Yorkshire peaks. It is a great place to watch the weather, the birds and the sunsets. We went on scenic drives and found a marvellous tea room in Downham. We also went to the atmospheric ruins of Whalley Abbey and called in to their up unique Autisan cafe for lunch. Also, as my mum is a keen knitter she couldn't be happier than talking to Freda who sells wool from her own flock of rare breed Teeswater sheep. For those who enjoy a pint there are traditional and trendy watering holes in Clitheroe with outstanding locally brewed ales. There is also a traditional award winning wine merchants, a rare breed too! Barrowford is worth a visit for the ancient Pendle Heritage Centre and the Booths supermarket. It is also very near to the bargains of Boundary Mill. If eating out is your thing it certainly seems to be appreciated round here. There are so many good places to eat out, including the Assheton Arms in Downham, a Lanachire Life Dining Pub of the Year. But if cooking or packing a picnic is your thing head to the market in Clitheroe, Lancashire's official Food Town. You will find sustainable, community based produce - pies, sausages, cakes and bread. We love to take a picnic on the Tolkein Trail and eat by the river, or if you do the Witches' Trail you can shelter by a traditional stone wall to enjoy a butter pie and flask of coffee. There are some really enjoyable walks right from the door, up and over the windswept fells to hear the curlew and see the skylark and the hares, or wander along the ancient green lanes to see primroses and violets. There is a fun short walk through the badger wood next to the farm, you can settle down in the hide and wait to see the Badgers at dusk. You could even sling your hammock for a spot of wild camping under the rookery. For younger ones there are magical hobbit holes and grassy ravines with shallow streams to mess about in. There are chickens to feed and ducks by the rivers in Clitheroe , next to the swimming pool and in Barrowford. The little ones can also play on the cobbled patio in front of the Lower Laithe French windows, or on the enclosed lawn. My son in law likes to bike and there is a national cycle route passing the end of the lane, interesting hill climbs and muddy, stony off road routes, including Gisburn forest, a short drive away. At the farm you can wash your bike down and store it safely. So add to all that the fact that Freda and Darryl are excellent and generous hosts, going out of their way to help in any way, and you can see why we will be re- booking very soon!

Accommodation was great, ready to use straight away clean and well maintained, cake was waiting for us when we arrived which was a nice surprise. Everything you should need was there. Freda and Darrell were very welcoming, and told us the history of the farm and the Teeswater sheep.
The views from the living room window were beautiful. All in all a very good holiday would recommend a visit.
Nice and remote no traffic noise only the sounds of the countryside. Thank you for a wonderful time. We will be back.

We have been coming every year for more than ten years and we have both the Laithe and the Granary to accommodate four couples for a long weekend. This is a working farm, mainly sheep but also some cattle. The property is very well equipped and nothing is too much trouble for our hosts Freda and Darrell Pilkington. The views and the walking are excellent. A favourite round from the farm is up onto the ridge to Pendle Hill then descend to the Assheton Arms in Downham.for lunch then back across the fields.

This was our first trip to England and let me just say...Wow, what an awesome vacation we had!! We booked our stay at Higher Gills Farm, which was absolutely perfect!! The scenery is gorgeous and we just loved all the animals around the farm. It was also very convenient to so many places that we wanted to go visit during the day and then it was really cozy to come back to at night. Lots of extras were provided by the owners. Having the kitchen made it really nice to be able to prepare meals when we wanted to. Darrell and Freda are awesome!! They are very friendly and super helpful. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit England. Thank you so much Freda and Darrell.
