“Amazing all round views and sunsets”
Reviewed 2 July 2018 for a stay in June 2018

Well equipped apartment with the most stunning views of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen y Ghent at the front and Pendle Hill to the back. Sunsets were a different colour every night and we could have been in Africa when they were orange! Amazing weather too. Thank you Freda for a relaxing stay.

“Just fabulous !”
Reviewed 2 June 2018 for a stay in May 2018

My second visit here, my partners first. An amazing apartment in the most stunning part of the UK. Views of the fells were just something else. The apartment has everything you could possibly need, Freda and Darrel are brilliant, Freda makes me howl laughing. The hide watching the badgers was just the icing on the cake. This is a little known part of the UK, very very beautiful and a brilliant place to stay for a few days /.week. We will be back. I love it here

“Secret hideaway in the shadow of Pendle Hill.”
Reviewed 7 May 2018 for a stay in April 2018

We stayed at Higher Gills Farm for a week in mid April. I've only just got round to downloading my camera's memory card. It wasn't far from home (the Yorkshire side of the Pennines) but Pendle is an area we had been for day trips and wanted to explore more. Fantastic, relaxing week with the feeling that you're in the middle of nowhere and yet we were in easy access of Malham in The Dales, The Forest of Bowland, Clitheroe as well as the villages and scenery around the very imposing Pendle Hill. We almost went into Lancaster one day on the Pendle Witch Trial (starting at the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford) but decided to just go as far as Jubilee Tower. Here you have a view of Morecombe Bay as well as looking back towards the Trough of Bowland and the Ribble Valley. Another day I hired a tramper (like a 4 wheel drive mobility scooter) in Gisburn Forest.

The cottage was very well equipped. Freda, the owner is very welcoming and friendly. This is a working family farm and it was in the middle of lambing time when we visited. Lower Laithe and the Granary are apartments in former stables. Freda explained the stables were converted about 20 years ago. I would expect there have been hundreds of happy self-caterers over that time enjoying the peace and quiet in the heart of the Lancashire countryside. The lay out is the same in both apartments with two bedrooms (double and twin) and open kitchen, lounge and dining area. The Granary (upstairs) has a small bath with shower over, and Lower Laithe a stand alone shower unit in the bathroom (no bath). Both apartments have both a front and back access, obviously the upper apartment is via external stone stair cases. Lower Laithe is very suitable for anyone with limited mobility. We used the patio door throughout the week. There is a long access road to the property, quite bumpy in parts due to the harsh winter. I imagine the higher bump in the middle gets more pronounced after a few winters and will receive some attention in due course to level it out. It didn't stop us going off everyday as you do, to explore the area. Parking is no problem - plenty of space in the car park adjacent to the property. There is a new utility room next to the apartments with washing machine and dryer to use, and a rotary drier if the weather's decent.

We took the opportunity to invite a few family visitors - my parents for a few nights and my brother and his family for a lazy Sunday lunch. The weather forecasters promised a sunny week but the sun didn't come out until later in the week. Consequently we didn't manage to make the most of the garden area accessed from the car park area or down a few steps off the patio area. The garden is large and level with swing/ slide for children, and wooden seating on the patio area for the adults. On a warm evening, you would be able to sit out and watch the sun go down over the distant hills.

As mentioned there is plenty to go and do if you want to venture out. Whilst not a walker myself I expect the area is a magnet for walkers and I imagine there are plenty of walks you could do directly from the farm. There is a wildlife hide is a short walk from the farm which overlooks a badger sett. The Ribble valley has a good reputation as a foodie destination. Plenty of choice for country pubs as well as deli-style cafes. I also recommend a visit to the Bowland brewery and food hall at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe. We had a lovely evening out for a meal and quiz night at The Bay Horse in Rough Lee. This is a pub which was saved from developers by the local community after it suffered a disastrous kitchen fire. It was refurnished and reopened in October 2017.

If you are looking for chic or boutique, this is probably not for you. If you want a comfortable home from home for a week's break with unspoilt countryside all around - this is definitely for you.

Thank you for review & that your stay was enjoyable.
You are correct now that lambing time has finished, we can repair the winter damage to the road, which will include concreting a considerable length.

“Home-from-home in a breathtaking setting”
Reviewed 1 May 2018 for a stay in April 2018

Lower Laithe was equipped with everything we could possibly need. It was warm and comfortable and owners Freda and Darrell were welcoming and helpful. The farm is high up and isolated so that the views are stunning. We could see Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent through the French windows and watching the sunset behind them all each evening will stay with me as a lovely memory of a wonderful, relatively-unsung part of England.

Although I was born in this area I now live quite a long way away. We stay here when we visit family and friends and it feels like home. We are always made welcome and can feel stress drain away when we turn onto the lane leading to the farm. Just wonderful.

Four couples have been meeting here for a weekend in spring for at least 10 years. We can thoroughly recommend Higher Gills. It's a working farm with lambing in progress. It is on the side of Pendle with great views across the valley. Great walks direct from the farm or close at hand with a good selection of pubs for lunch.
Freda and Darrell Pilkington are very attentive and helpful hosts. Have booked again for next year!
