The Ugadale Hotel & Cottages
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Machrihanish
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 August 2011

This gem on the Mull of Kintyre offers luxurious accommodation and great service. The standard of the rooms was way beyond our expectations - large, well-equipped and completely spotless, you will not find better anywhere.

The main attraction of the area is the magnificent golf courses (the reason for our trip) with Machrihanish Golf Club literally on the doorstep and the new Machrihanish Dunes course a few minutes away by car. However, golf is only one activity available - the Cottages would make an excellent base for walking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits. If you don't relish the thought of too much physical activity you could be tempted to just hide away in luxury and relax.

The Cottages have fully-equipped kitchens if you like the idea of catering for yourself but, after a couple of rounds on the Dunes, cooking was the last thing on our minds. Luckily the pub within the complex offered good food and great hospitality which is just as well because there is not much choice within the immediate area and the night life in nearby Campbeltown isn't exactly sparkling. That said, don't be put off. The Cottage complex has everything you'll need for a great trip.

We spent the week at Machrihanish and were extremely pleased. The service was great, especially from Stacy, Stuart, and the staff at the pub.

The cottages are very large, clean, and modern. The food at the pub was very, very good with a broad selection.

Believe it or not, we didn't play much golf because we were so happy to explore the countryside. We took trips to Arran, Islay, Saddell, Carradale, Tarbert, Campbeltown, and the Mull of
Kintyre.......to name just a few.

We plan on returning next summer!

Thank you for your visit to Machrihanish Dunes and your favorable comments! We are glad that you note that there is so much to do in the area in addition to our world-class golf. When you return next year, we will have completed the restoration of The Ugadale Hotel at The Village at Machrihanish Dunes and The Royal Hotel in nearby Campbeltown. The Ugadale will have 22 rooms and suites, a fine dining restaurant and a spa. The Royal will have 23 rooms, a fine dining restaurant and a harbourfront pub. The restoration of these iconic turn of the century hotels will bring them back to their past glory, bringing a new standard of accommodation to the region. We look forward to your next stay!

I cannot rate this highly enough. very luxurious accommodation with 2 ensuite bedrooms with wall mounted plasma tv in each room and in the living room , spacious dining area/kitchen, Very helpful & friendly staff. This is an ideal place to get away from the usual busy days we all have, very quiet & peaceful, with the beach right across the road . Machrihanish is a place i would not hesitate to recommend for a relaxing break.

Golf for the boys and a relaxing massage in the comfort of my accommodation.

12 of us recently went on a golf weekend to Machrihanish and booked these cottages as part of a package. The cottages were superb in every detail and we would certainly use them again. We found the Dunes golf course a bit of a slog with it taking over 5 hours per round and we were a bit dissapointed as we had expected something special. The course was in a lovely setting but maybe in a few years time it will be better.

Excellent accomodation and food for a short trip of 4 nights. We took 2 ferries and winding roads from Glasgow on a fabulously sunny day, What a way to arrive and only 1/2 hour longer than the road trip.
The location is great while the complex is not perfect, but overall well worth 5 rating IMO.
Good Points -
High spec and comfotable bedrooms / Living rooms
Food was universally high quality and service very friendly. We ate in the clubhouse every night and the menu had plenty to offer - but you'll need to book, there is no where else at all......
Golf was great at Machrihannish GC, Good at Mach Dunes (more on golf below)
Value was good for the quality - for a family of 3.

Not So Good
No bath - despite plenty of room for one and showers did not work that well.
Odd lack of some facilities for cottages
Our cottage had no view - just the road and the bins - see if you can get an upstairs one. Other than that the location is spectacular - 1 minute to golf club and amazing beach.

The Golf-
Machrihanish GC is spectacular with an amazing variety of holes and eminently playable for a links course. We had no problem booking times, although not much of a welcome!
Mach Dunes - staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It was "miliionaires golf" - virtually no one else playing. The downside is very mixed condition of course - 5 greens just in very poor condition - but the green fee reflects this IMO. Also all those blind shots, compounded by knee length rough. I don't think I would want to play again and again as the blind shots, knee high rough combination can just get a bit dispiriting. Nevertheless a great venue for a short term golf trip.
The owners are pressing on with their project in renovating two hotels - one next door and one in Campbeltown. They are sinking a lot of money, time and effort into revitalising the venue. Cynics may see it as another potential White Elephant, but I really hope it works out and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view.

We are always happy to receive comments from our cottage guests and from people who have played our golf course. We appreciate each and every one of them. As a new resort with a new golf course, we recognize that there may be times when we do not measure up to everyone’s expectations -- but please be assured that we strive to do just that every day. We were proud to have been named “Hotel of the Year” (small hotels category) by Golf Tourism Scotland in 2010 and feel it is a tribute to both the luxurious accommodation we offer and the quality of the service provided by our caring staff. We are also very pleased to have been ranked one of the top 30 courses in Scotland – and one of the top 100 in all of the U.K. This honor stems from a combination of things: our scenic location, the challenging design of the golf course, and our commitment to enhancing and improving the course whenever and wherever possible. It is because of this commitment that we decided in late 2010 to make some alterations to several of the greens on our course. Five greens were completely rebuilt, and along with all our greens have required top-dressing and other maintenance as we bring them up to form. In the long run, we feel these changes will enhance the experience for everyone who visits Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club. As of today, August 3rd, we have been able to reduce the height of the grass on our greens to just 3 mm, the shortest they have been since the course opened. They are now very healthy – and running smooth and true. With the permission of Scottish National Heritage, the government body which oversees our site, we have also undertaken an extensive rough mitigation program that began in late July. This has greatly reduced the height of the rough in most areas and has made the course even more playable. We don’t like hunting for balls, either, and now we have been allowed to reduce the rough to a point where it is much less of a factor. We will continue to look for ways to improve our course and all aspects of the resort experience we offer at The Village at Machrihanish Dunes, and welcome any comments that can help us in that regard.

Stayed here mid July 2011. Accommodation is fitted out to a very high standard and is a very comfortable place to stay. Plasmas in the living room and both bedrooms. Two things the cottages lack, a washing machine and an oven. If you were to buy a share in these, I would have thought these would be important if you were staying for a week.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast is plentiful and of good quality. Ate in the old clubhouse at lunchtime, good quality pub food, defiantly recommend.

The Machrihanish Dunes course is about 7.5 miles from the cottages. Some excellent holes but lots of blind shots! Enjoyed it a lot and hope the greens mature a bit in the coming years (only 2 years old!) There are also restrictions on what they can do with the course due to environmentalists, so as a result the paths are not well defined and very rough. Course is a tough walk due to all the hills. In a couple of years this will be a very good links.

Also played Machrihanish, good course in excellent condition. Plays a lot easier than Machrihanish Dunes.

Great place to visit and excellent accommodation.
