“Rankin Ranch The Perfect Family Experience”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

We took our Granddaughters aged 10 and 12 with the expectation that they would get immersed in Ranch life. It was SO much more. The rode horses, swam, played shuffleboard, ladder ball, foosball, games in the rec room, fed baby animals, square dancing! Bunko!, and all under the watchful eye of the counselors. What I didn't expect was the camraderie, friendship, and sportsmanship they exhibited. They were so gracious and made friends with the other guests ... all of this is fostered in the family environment of the Guest Ranch. Grandpa and I relaxed and enjoyed watching our girls have so much fun. We will definitely be back next year.

Room Tip: All the cabins are quite comfortable, clean and roomy

Our family of six spent 4 nights here in May. We had a wonderful week and our kids are angling to return. The Rankins go out of their way to make every guest feel special and welcome.

Of course the highlight is the horseback riding, but there was plenty else to do for our non-rider. In addition to riding twice a day(!), we explored the nearby surroundings, went fishing in a little rowboat on the pond, hiked around the expansive property, Fed
The baby animals at the little petting zoo, swam in the swimming pool, played foosball and board games from their ample supply in the game room, and ate far too much "down-home cookin' !"

The food is tasty & filling, but beware to those watching their weight: the menu, though yummy, hasn't been changed in about 40 years, so those who grew up on old-fashioned church potlucks will smile at the jello salads, the meatloaf, scoops of cottage cheese & canned peaches, friend chicken, macaroni salad, etc. Our kids had never had jello salad (fruit cocktail included!) and delighted at its presence at many a meal that week. :-). Apparently the ranch's matriarch, long gone, did the menu planning back in the day, and the ranch took the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. I gained five pounds but boy, was it tasty!

Another reviewer wrote that the rooms are "comfortable, neither rustic nor luxurious" and I would definitely echo that. The cabins are dated but comfy. Basic comfortable, accommodations, nothing fancy but very adequate. The service staff is friendly and the rooms
are clean.

The ranch does offer a kids program in high season, but we weren't there during high season. They did have evening activities every other evening: fun things like bingo night, and a hay-ride picnic out to the meadow, where they held horseshoe contests and had good old-fashioned fun.

It seems that this place tends to draw nice folks: everyone we
met there was friendly and interesting to talk to, from the Rankins themselves, to wranglers, to the kitchen staff, even the guests! We thoroughly enjoyed our week and hope to be back!

Ps: we thought it had very good value, though at first pass it seems expensive, I think it was about the same, maybe a bit more, than it would have been for our whole family to spend the same amount of time at Disneyland, since the Ranch is all-inclusive, from food to entertainment.

Last week, on a whim, I decided to drive up to Rankin Ranch and spend a weekend on a real working ranch. I love to ride and I had heard about horseback vacations before, but had never partaken in one. The experience was amazing, the ranch and landscape was beautiful, the horses were friendly and affectionate, and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. My cabin was super comfortable, with a heater provided for the chilly nights.

You can also visit my blog post to see more images of the ranch and horses:

Enjoy, and may you find yourself lost in the rustic beauty of this place!

I have been coming to Rankin Ranch since I was very young with my family. My parents continued the tradition by bringing all of their grandchildren every summer. This summer, most of the grandchildren will be coming and taking time off work to be there. The oldest ones are 30. I think that is a testament to what a wonderful, family vacation spot this is.

My husband and I just took our 4 year old son for Memorial Day weekend. We had such a great time! He participated in the children's program (scavenger hunt, swimming, treasure hunt, arts and crafts, and hikes), while my husband and I enjoyed two horseback rides a day, beautiful walks in the basin, fishing, and time to relax. This guest ranch is run by the most marvelous family and they are quite possibly the nicest people you could ever meet. All of our needs were met and the food is delicious. You get three full meals a day, two horseback rides (ages 6 and up), and time to connect with other families and your own. This is a great place to unplug...no cell service!

This is the Rankin's 150th year as a working cattle ranch. It has a great rustic charm and is a wonderful place to take a deep breath and unwind. I can say, without a doubt, we will always include Rankin Ranch as a yearly destination.

“People tell us one of the things they like most about Rankin Ranch is the freedom their kids get to have out here.” Glenda Rankin said as I checked out of our cabin after our three night stay. I had to agree. My 9 year old Christina had quickly transitioned from being ambivalent about joining in on all of the activities, to becoming a regular in the pack of kids that participated in all the horseback rides and ran around the ranch feeding goats and chickens and sheep and enjoyed lively square dancing in the evening.

Rankin Ranch is located in a beautiful mountainous area that does not get cell phone service or have wireless reception, although there is a pay phone available. So visitors get out from behind their computers and phones and interact with the natural environment around them and with each other. It’s a bit like having the opportunity to step back in time, to an era when people routinely communicated face to face, and kids could run around and play outside all day. The Rankins infuse the ranch with their gracious manners and warm hospitality; this is a place where your fellow guests will say hello and smile as they walk by.

Rankin Ranch isn’t a place for the hard-to-please who expect some level of luxury. But if you would like your family to reconnect with nature and experience a simpler way of life, would enjoy riding horses twice daily through some beautiful countryside, can be laid back enough to enjoy comfort food that isn’t fancy but is satisfying, a cabin that doesn’t have TV or wireless but is well-kept and cozy, and a game of horshoes or bingo, then you should consider a visit to Rankin Ranch.

We’ve found if we get the kids hooked, the parents will keep coming back.” Glenda said after I told her how much Christina had enjoyed the ranch activities. Very true as well – Rankin Ranch is now a strong contender with Disneyland as a possible site for her next birthday celebration.

Thank you so much for taking a moment to share about your stay at our ranch. We do feel that the ranch gives children the opportunity to just be "kids" and everyone can "unplug" from the technology filled world that we live in. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with us and will look forward to seeing you again.

This was our 4th time here (and 3rd time in the past 3 years)! You can stay one night, 2 nights or as many as you wish (unlike the other dude ranches where you must stay on specific dates for X amount of days).

If you stay one night, you get 3 full meals and 1 horseback ride (check-in at 3pm). If you stay 2 nights, you get 6 full meals and 3 horseback rides. Each meal is a lot of great food!

The mountain scenery is beautiful. The family owners are the nicest people. If you are an old west re-enactor like we are, there are many photo opportunities - such as the c.1860 Barn, which was the Stage Stop for the overland mail route, on the property.

You stay in a spacious duplex cabin which has very comfortable beds. The per person price is all inclusive - room, meals, and horseback riding (although you can pay a little extra for a ride on the day of your arrival).

Look them up on Facebook "Rankin Ranch" or at rankinranch.com. BTW, kids are never bored at Rankin Ranch!

Room Tip: Ask for the cabin above the old barn. It's the most secluded. If you have a large family, then...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Quarter Circle U Rankin Ranch is truly a well kept secret, located deep in California's Tehachapi Mountains. It has been a working cattle ranch since the days of the Civil War, and the Rankin family still raises White Face Hereford cattle just as their ancestors did over 150 years ago. Guests travel from across the United States and around the world visit this guest ranch. They enjoy the fact that it is a "real" working ranch, and are fascinated with its century old history. Many guests emphasize the importance of the "family" atmosphere; meeting and visiting with Rankin family members is routine as they all live right on the ranch...4Th, 5th and 6th generations. "Western hospitality" is part of your package! The favorite activity at the ranch has always been the horseback riding. We have both adult and children's rides (riding starts at age six) which explore our meadows, Walker's Basin Creek, and mountain ridges overlooking our beautiful little valley. The guided trail rides are about one hour long and all levels of riders are welcome. Parents and grandparents especially appreciate the supervised children's program for ages 4-11 during Spring Break and the summer months. They enjoy arts and crafts, hikes, and visits to the animal farm. Other ranch activities include swimming, hiking, fishing (trout stocked pond), shuffleboard, ping pong, recreation room and planned evening activities. Adventure West...Kidstuff says, "A full operation cattle ranch, Rankin offers a fun filled, down home kind of vacation, complete with tradition, history and diversions for both young and old." ... more   less
