Even perusing the gift shop is quite enlightening. There are many geological specimens of fossils. Collections and samples are here from around the world, not just what is in the woods behind the entry gate.

A great diversion from the wine tours . Staff and guides were pleasant and helpful. This is a stop worth making . Be sure to take the drive back he through the lower half of the Sonoma valley.

We lucked out yesterday, as Petrified Forest was celebrating its 100th anniversary, so we got in for free that day. You could probably see the entire place in less than an hour, but it's worth taking your time to check out these 60-100 foot petrified redwoods up close. They just opened up a 1/4 mile long trail leading up to an ancient ash fall, where there's a nice view of Mt. St. Helena.

After visiting the national park in Arizona, this modest little hidden gem is amazing (and the road from Ca listoga ain't bad either) couldn't believe the size of the massive half-buried trees, and if its good enough for Robert Louis Stevenson and Luther Burbank, you should check it out too.

Stopped here primarily to eat my picnic lunch and use the restroom, but decided to pay and walk through the site. It was interesting, probably not worth what you pay, but it was my chance to see petrified wood and learn about it. The pathway walk was not challenging for me or that long, but those with physical issues may have trouble.
