Owner description: Located in beautiful Napa Valley wine country, Bothe-Napa Valley offers year-round camping for tents, RVs, bikes, walk-ins and now YURTS! Day visitors enjoy picnicking, hiking trails and a seasonal swimming pool. Large picnic grounds are available for group events. Stop in at our Visitor Center in the 1860s Tucker House, and learn about the park's first homestead families - trail maps available. Hikes range from easy, shady strolls in the redwoods to longer hikes up to Coyote Peak with great views of the valley. Or, take a hike on the History Trail past the historic Pioneer Cemetery and on to our sister park, the Bale Grist Mill, where you can take a tour of an operating water powered mill built in 1846 that still grinds grain on the original stones!

My wife and I, along with a friend, hiked here during our three-day stay in Calistoga. The trails are well-marked, and the map park staff provided us with was very helpful. We hiked on a Thursday, so there were very few people around, but I imagine it gets crowded on weekends. It was a hot day (90 degrees) but the hike was mostly shaded so the heat was not much of an issue. We did just under 7 miles, and covered most of the trails in the park. My only "complaint" (and it's a very mild one!) is that there is no view from the highest point in the park. Rather, you do get somewhat of an expansive view a few minutes before actually reaching the peak. We had a great day out in the trees and shade! Do note that my wife spotted poison oak around, so be mindful where you step.

We really liked our 2.5 hour hike here. It was something we hadn't planned and did it at the spur of the moment. We saw wild turkeys and deer but no mountain lions or ticks (fortunately). It is very close to St. Helena and Calistoga and there is ample parking - plus it is very inexpensive.

Camping at Bothe-Napa is one of the few affordable places to stay in the Napa Valley but for veteran campers it is an "urban" experience. Fortunately, the campground is a fair ways away from the busy highway so relatively quiet. We stayed Memorial Day weekend and it was more than packed, at least 3 cars and multiple tents in each site. The crowd did not settle down until after 11pm, lots of families with kids, hardly any RV's with generators. Most of the sites are fairly private, a few sites suitable for larger groups, and even some secluded walk-in sites. The bathroom has hot showers and a dish washing sink with hot water, pure luxury. A swimming pool is a welcome destination for hot, rowdy kids. The hiking trails take you through a mixed oak and redwood forest as well as a grassy hillside with partial views of the valley, the full loop is about 6 miles. Calistoga is a 5-10 minute drive, plenty of ways to spend money there: restaurants, shops, bike rentals, wine shops, spas, a hardware store, and grocery market. Palisades Deli is the best. And of course plenty of wineries. A unique campground in the playground for the rich and famous!

My husband and I decided to splurge a little on a yurt instead of the usual car camping thing, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was roomy for 2 people, with a fairly comfy mattress on the bed (you bring your own bedding including pillows), and 2 cots for extra people. Each site had a good fire pit you can barbecue on (the grill on top was small, but perfectly good for us) and hang out at night. The camp hosts located by yurt site #7 and tent site #23 are helpful, and sell firewood with kindling for $8 a box. The only downer about this place was the drone of daytime traffic from the nearby freeway, but the same freeway takes you to Calistoga in less than a 5 minute drive, so it was a fair trade.

We went camping with 3 other families and most had children between the ages of 4-8 years old. The area is well-suited for kids there was just a ton of poison oak when we went so we made sure to stay on marked trails. We appreciated the swimming pool (you can get a day pass/wristband). The showers down by the pool were superior to the ones up at the campsite. The site is very close to the main road and it's sometimes funny to hear someone say "I'll go to town to get ice/food/etc" and they're back in a matter of minutes, sometimes with take-out food from the local eateries. It's a good spot if you want to be very close to the main road; not so good if you want to get away from it all.
