This California state park has no entrance fee, park your car just off Highway 29 (about 7 miles from Calistoga). There were flyers posted advising to leave no valuables in the car, however no signs or recent car breakins were apparent. The trail to Mt Helena is 5 miles out and back, Table Rock is a more leisurely 4-mile round trip which we chose. After about one mile, no further road noise is audible and it feels like a national park. There are grand views across the terrain, north up to Mount Shasta on clear days, and check out the madrone trees. The path is mostly in the shade and then opens up a little after a mile going through chaparral. A man-made stone labyrinth makes for a nice distraction along the path. Definitely worth a visit - not very crowded during the week.

Included in our Xmas trip, if no rain, we like to hike to the top of Mt St Helena, thru this park. Ron carries the picnic basket for a top of the mt' feast. Beautiful views from the top, a nice easy hike.

I often hike on Mt St Helena, being lucky enough to live in the neighborhood. My B&B, Backyard Garden Oasis, is just a few miles away. On clear days you can see all the way to Shasta in the east and the Pacific in the west as well as Mt Diablo from the top of an easy 5-mile hike to the top of the mountain. The second hiking trail goes to Table Rock and beyond, and mostly overlooks the Mayacama Mountain range and the Napa Valley.

When we decided to go and visit this park we mistakenly thought that it was a suburban type park. We were wrong. It is a national park where you hike along a trail up a hill for a mile to the Robert Louis Stevenson memorial. It's not a particularly difficult walk, but don't do as we did and turn up in flipflops, as it is up the start of a walk up Mount St Helena.
We also had a shock when a dear suddenly hurtled down the hillside in the wooded undergrowth and all we initially saw was something black moving very quickly down the hill!
If we'd had more appropriate footware we might have carried on further as it's only 5miles to the top of the mountain.
When you get to the monument it's slightly disappointing, but carry on and have a look at the old mine entrances etc..

We enjoyed a hike on the Table Rock trail in April 2007. Flowers were OK up to Table Rock and spectacular past it! This is a botanical wonderland!
Most of the trail is in good condition. The first junction shortly after you leave the parking lot isn't marked (go left) but others are. There was almost no trash along the trail and very few people on a weekday even though it was a vacation week for schools. Well worth a trip!
