“A perfect weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

I was treated to the most beautiful weekend in Calistoga at The Roman Spa. Even with the pool being renovated the property was wonderful The front desk staff were so helpful with recommendations and suggestions, friendly and warm.

The spa experience was simply incredible; mud bath, geothermal soak and then a couples massage, wow. The spa was clean and so well run. We loved the staff, our bath attendant and massage therapists were fabulous. We really felt pampered.

The room was clean and comfortable although on our next stay we want to stay in the Jacuzzi Suite across from our room, it is gorgeous!!

We will be back. Thanks for a fabulous getaway

Room Tip: If you're up for a treat ask for the remodeled rooms upstairs. The Jacuzzi Suite was stunning.

Thank you for your gracious comments. I'm pleased that your gift of a room and spa weekend was so well received and thoroughly enjoyed. When you return next time you will also have the added pleasure of soaking in our outdoor geothermal pools under the stars which is always such a wonderful end to the day. Indeed, the Jacuzzi Suite is the ultimate experience, we have two of these rooms for those looking for a private 2 person geothermal adventure.

We spent a mid-week night at the Roman Spa Resort in Calistoga using the Manager's Special, which was a king-size non-smoking room, plus two massages, and two mud baths/mineral baths for $299.00. From the outside the Roman Spa doesn't look like much; my first thought was that it was built in the 1970's, however, that's the look of many of the lodging places in Calistoga as the town still retains a bit of funkiness.

Our room was fantastic. Quite large with a heavenly king-size bed, wonderful pillows, large HD tv with more cable stations than I've ever seen. The room was impeccably clean.

The outside pool and spa were closed for renovation, which we knew about in advance. Despite the process of taking a pool down to it's bare bones being quite dusty, our room was located out of sight of the renovation and we weren't impacted by it in the least. The indoor spa pool and his/her dry saunas were working and very enjoyable. The indoor spa is heated to a perfect 100 degrees and is large enough to do laps in, but that kind of defeats the point of mineral water relaxation, in my opinion.

The included mud bath was a first for both my wife and I. It was incredible. As this was our first, I don't know the typical ingredients in a mud bath, but this one consisted of peat, volcanic ash, and mineral water. Sort of like laying in 103 degree quicksand I suppose but our bodies were suspended and we never sunk to the bottom of the tub. Loved it. During the treatment an assistant came in several times to place cold towels over our foreheads and to provide us with sips of ice cold water. Very nicely done. After 20 mins or so in the mud bath we showered off and then relaxed in a jetted mineral bath, which was also quite nice.

This was followed by a 60 min massage for each of us. My wife is a massage regular and proclaimed this one to be among the best she's received. I'm a noob but I was impressed that the masseur took the time to ask me if I had any muscle or soreness issues he should address. How good was is? Well, he had to wake me when it was done. Pure bliss.

One of the highlights of staying at the Roman Spa is that downtown Calistoga, with all it's shops and restaurants, is located 1/2 a block away. Great downtown to poke around in without having to drive. We ate dinner at Checkers Restaurant (yummy, and good value), and had breakfast at the Cafe Sarafornia (food was just okay and a little pricey for what you get- won't be back).

This trip was an anniversary outing and we liked it so much we've decided to make an annual pilgrimage to the Roman Spa Resort.

Thank you for your very kind and gracious review. It is always a pleasure to know that not only did we meet but exceeded your expectations on many levels. We truly strive to make each guest and each visit memorable. When you return next year for your anniversary you will be able to enjoy our newly renovated outdoor geothermal pools and surrounding pool area, which will be another added bonus. It's really quite delightful soaking under the stars and having the mist rise up around you.
Once again, happy anniversary and we look forward to serving you next year!

Stayed here for a wedding and it worked well because we were constantly on the go... Clean and nice staff but truly a motel. If it were a romantic getaway I would have been very disappointed. The rooms were outdated and the whole property was tired looking, amazing location though right in downtown.

I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed and felt we looked like a "motel." Our exterior door fronts that open onto lush gardens with hundreds of varieties of flowers, gathering patios spaces, a barbque area with gas and charcoal grills, as well as our amazing geothermal pools traditionally delight both our new and repeat guests. I recognize that our outdoor pools were under renovation during your stay so you could not experience how delightful it is to soak outdoors in the evening under the stars. Hopefully, you enjoyed our charming town of Calistoga and will consider returning at some point. For future reference, the Chamber of Commerce can assit you in finding exactly the type of accommodations and property that will better suit your needs.

There is nothing I look forward to more than my annual birthday trip to the Roman Spa with friends. This year's trip was outstanding. The weather was perfect, sat out in the lovely gardens, right outside my room and watched a large red hibiscus open right before my eyes! The pools were heavenly and spent a good amount of time soaking, chatting, noshing and reading trashy magazines. Enjoyed the Friday special at the spa - two mud, mineral baths and massage. We had so much fun laughing and relaxing. Can't wait for our next stay!

Room Tip: We enjoy the kitchen with 2 queen beds. With a group of friends, this is the best way to go!

We are honored that you choose us for your annual birthday get- together with friends. We truly strive for that relaxed, comfortable, memorable experience, that includes things like "watching a large red hibiscus open right before my eyes." We also believe that soaking, chatting, and noshing are good for the body and soul. Add geothermal water to the mix and the benefits are enhanced three fold!
We look forward to seeing you on your next birthday.

The Roman Spa in Calistoga is our go-to. Rest and relaxation, beautiful garden environment with table and chairs near every room, bbq and picnic area for all to use and the wonderful pools with welcoming, warm water. We prefer a room that offers a full kitchen as once we are there - we rarely venture off the grounds. Three nights has become our minimum stay - though we always wish we could easily stay longer.
The Spa next door offers specials/deals and we've always been pleased with their services. This time we indulged in the mud/mineral bath and massage combo.
The Roman Spa get-away makes you long for more get-aways!

I too found it difficult to locate a place with two queen beds for a Friends Getaway and I am delighted to have found the Roman Spa Resort. The grounds are lovely and well maintained and I enjoyed the seasonal decorative touches that were added around the public areas. At first I found the room a bit dated but the bed was extremely comfortable and the decor actually fit the charm of Calistoga. Location was perfection -- walking access to town as well as convenient and for treks to Napa and/or the Alexander Valley. Staff was always pleasant and helpful. The mineral pools, jacuzzi and Spa were wonderful. Thank you Elizabeth for a making my first mud bath a terrific experience! Your timing for bringing a cool towel and a cold drink of water were perfect. I would return to the Roman Spa Resort again and again.

Room Tip: A kitchette was convenient and allowed us to enjoy some fresh produce from the Farmers Market.

Thank you for your comments. Indeed, it is challenging at times to find rooms with 2 queen beds, often hotels offer only 2 doubles which we believe are cramped and uncomfortable when sharing with another, so we have always provided the queen mattress for our 2 bedded rooms.
I'm also glad your first mud bath experience was "terrific," indeed Elizabeth as well as our other mud attendants are excellent with timing and providing the individualized treatment that distinguishes us in the area of superior customer service.
We look forward to serving you again in the future.

We arrived on Friday evening and were greeted at the desk. Our check-in materials were ready as was our room. It as pleasant and comfortable. We went out and enjoyed the pools then back to room to relax and fall asleep to sound of the fountains.
The next morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at sarafotnia restaurant and went to the farmers' market. We returned for our spa treatments and were delighted. The quality and the service were outstanding. We had mud baths and massages. They were great.
Spent the afternoon relaxing, went for another wander and an early dinner.
Relaxed some more. Very comfortable, lovely grounds and good service! Will be back!
