“Shangri-La in Calistoga”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

We drove to Calistoga as a diversion during our longer stay in San Francisco. We selected Meadowlark Country House based upon reading the reviews of several inns located in the area. Despite this being our first visit, we felt like we were visiting the country estate of long-time family friends rather than staying at a commercial establishment. Richard and Kurt have magically created a remarkable experience for their guests.
Naturally, as a B&B, the breakfast is important. Each morning, breakfast featured a different theme. In addition to preparing and serving the menu for each day, Richard willingly prepared the extra items that my wife and I requested at breakfast each morning. The bedroom is fantastic. Music was playing softly in our room when we first arrived. The furniture is comfortable and décor tasteful. The oversize tile bathroom is exquisite. Our room has French doors leading to a large secluded patio with a well-tended border flower garden and small lily pond.
Since I am addicted to natural hot mineral spring water, I rose early each morning, brewed a cup of hot tea in the dining room and spent an hour or two enjoying the sauna, pool and hot tub until breakfast was ready. We and most of the other guests spent our days visiting wineries before returning in the late afternoon to relax at poolside. We dined out two nights and for the other two nights brought wine, cheese, and fruit back from our daily excursions to enjoy a lingering mellow supper on our patio while day turned to night. There is a refrigerator in the dining area where guests can chill wine bottles and keep perishables.
During our mid-week stay, almost all the guests were first timers. The friendly atmosphere made it easy to strike up conversations with everyone both at the shared breakfast tables and by the pool.
We are looking forward to our next opportunity to spend time with Richard and Kurt at their Shangri-La.

We arrived after a short drive from Lake Tahoe for a night on our way up the Ca coast. Our suite (#2) was simply amazing.. huge with a large sitting room hallway leading to the 4poster bedroom with fireplace and very nice deck out back. So tastefully upscale with amazing decorations.

Hosts whom we met at breakfast were so friendly, my wife commented that she loved the paint color in the house and they ran around to get here a sample to take home and have duplicated at our local paint store... breakfast had great coffee, OJ and pancakes.. delish!

Lets talk about the whole "naked pool" thing. We are not naked pool people (at least with others around) but were certainly aware than the fantastic pool area did not require you to wear any clothes. Many of the guests were taking advantage of this option when we went, but after a few minutes (ok maybe 30 or so), we found ourselves able to have a straight faced conversation about local restaurants with the other less clothed (ok buck naked) guests while maintaining eye contact. I would say that the clothing optional thing was very much appreciated by a broad spectrum of ages and body types and everyone seemed really happy to be naked and very nonjudgmental of our choice to keep covered. Only the pool is clothing optional and if you don't venture there you would have no idea...

My only small suggestion for Meadowlark is about their choice of soaps/shampoos etc. I love Dove and Dial products but putting costco sized dispensers of there various products in the beautiful marble bath somehow takes the level of chic down a bit, a few tasteful refillable glass dispensers would be a phenomenal upgrade.

Overall, if back in the area, we very much look forward to coming back to the meadowlark and enjoying this special place...

We just recently returned from Meadowlark last Wed. We will only stay at Meadowlark in our future travels to N. California. The grounds were amazing and the accommodations are beautiful. Kurt and Richard are great hosts and great fun to talk with. They are knowledgeable of the surrounding area and can recommend any type of day trip you would be interested in. We spent our 10 yr anniversary trip wine tasting and enjoyed sipping wine on our private deck looking out at the amazing views.

We stayed in Suite #4 and it was perfect. Large deck with a view and a large room with a sitting room that was more than enough space for us. Breakfast was amazing we spent a lot of the time by the pool as well. You can tell that Kurt and Richard take great pride in the property and keep it in perfect condition. We enjoyed walking the property looking at the horses, gardens and lush landscape. We will definitely be returning and I highly recommend it to anyone in the traveling to the Northern Napa valley.

Room Tip: We stayed in Suite #4 in the main house and will request that room again. It was very romantic and...

Have just returned from our stay with friends at this wonderful resort. The accomodations surpassed the online descriptions, the pool area was great (no swimsuit, no problem), and as mentioned elsewhere the tastes of breakfast were delicious, and we had to inquire about the flavorful ingredients. Our scottish terrier also had a great time and made a new friend named "Sparky".
We were in Suite 1 which was awesome, great for meeting friends for some BBQ sandwiches (picked up in town) and paired with some new wines that we picked up at one of the great local wineries. We had a peak at some of the other accomodations and they looked great also.
Our next visit will include more down time at the resort, which is peaceful and very scenic with the horses, birds, kitchen gardens, and surounding landscaping, and of course the pool and jacuzzi.

Room Tip: Suites and rooms in the main house are all great (1-5) Mountain view room in a close by structure (s...

My husband and I first came to Meadowlark two years ago, and were instantly smitten with the serene, pristine, and luxurious accommodations. Meadowlark is a Hetero/ Gay/ Animal-friendly place to stay. The pool area is clothing optional, which we like, as we don't want to be around children when we are on vacation (all our children are grown). Kurt and Richard are the most gracious hosts, and if you are a first-time visitor to Napa, they are very knowledgeable as to which wineries to go to first. They provide the most delicious breakfasts before you embark on your daily wine treks. When you come back, you have the pool and jacuzzi to enjoy any hour of the day or night. The rooms are all unique and comfortable. We have stayed in apart from the main house which provides a secluded area and private patio, and we have stayed in the smallest room, Room 3, which is a cost-effective, cozy alternaive for a couple who prefer to spend most of their time outside their room. Meadowlark is a 5-minute drive from downtown Calistoga, which has some amazing restaurants (Hydro Grill for the best burger) and shopping. If you are motorcycle riders as we are, there are amazing daily riding sojourns to Napa, Sonoma, and Bodega Bay. Don't worry, you can ship your wine anywhere in downtown Calistoga.

Wife and I spent a week at Meadowlark in June 2013. This was our second visit and as many have said it is pure stress free relaxation. No agenda, no hurry, no worries!! Kurt & Richard were fabulous hosts once again and breakfast was always a special part of our day. Meadowlark is truly a beautiful place to unwind and we will be back.

Meadowlark Inn is a great escape in Napa Valley! You could not find more gracious hosts than Kurt & Richard! The rooms are wonderful, the breakfasts are delicious, and also usually quite interesting, lively conversation! If you are searching for a beautiful place, where you can feel completely relaxed...Meadowlark Inn is the place!

Room Tip: Many options for a room that would best suit an individuals preferrences!
