“Do not stay at this MOTEL”
Reviewed 15 September 2010

Do not stay at this hotel. They present it as a lovely spa hotel but it's a glorified roadside motel. Spend a little more and get a lot more elsewhere. We arrived late and walked into a room that was over 90 degrees. I called the front desk to see if there was something wrong with the AC unit but was informed the AC is an energy efficient unit and only works if someone is in the room. But basically they have the cleaning service turn it off. I asked to speak with the manager who at first refused to speak to me. He then called and argued with me. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL. He eventually gave me a whopping 15% off of a $259 room. Needless to say, we were up with the AC wall unit on all night. Wide awake at 5 a.m. we got up and left for home. It's not a great place to stay. It is very clean but VERY dated. Next time I'll pay more and stay at Solage.

GMatTheLodge, General Manager at Comfort Inn Calistoga, Hot Springs of the West, responded to this review, 16 September 2010
Let me first apologize for your inconvenience during your recent stay. As you mentioned, our AC units are new, energy efficient units that rely on PG&E Energy Management system in which the units turn off during periods when guests are outside of a room.

The systems are designed to stay within a 5-7 degree range of the "set" temperature. For example, if a guest were to set the temperature to 60 degrees AND leave, the unit will turn on and off to keep the room at 67 or below until the occupancy sensor is triggered by the guest's return. Once the sensor determines that someone is in the room, then the AC unit will remain on until 60 degrees is reached. As long as someone is in the room, the unit should maintain 60 degrees. It is true we advise our housekeeping staff to turn off the units when not in use after a guest has checked out . This is part of our Green Policy initiative and I can only say that many hotels in the travel industry have the very same policy in an effort to conserve energy.

I can only apologize to you again that all of this was not explained to you in a more courteous manor, and that you felt our efforts to resolve your issue by offering a discount was not to your satisfaction. We are currently reviewing all the sensors in the rooms to ensure they are working correctly in order to avoid a repeat of such occurrences in the future.

Thank You.

Stayed here for 3 nights and the purpose was to locate in an area which was convenient to the rest of Napa and well priced also. The Lodge fitted the bill, Day one we spent in the northern half of the valley and day two, the southern half and visited the wineries we had picked. The Lodge is just on the fringe of Calistoga, 1 minute in the car or 5 minute walk. The room was on the 2nd floor, well maintained, and very spacious. No complaints at all, breakfast was very busy, but you could get it and bring it back to room, if their was no seating in a small dining area. Great spot and would recommend it, pool available for those who did not want to travel around the place. Would stay here again.

Dropping into Calistoga one late Monday evening from a continuous drive from Portland, Oregon, we stopped at the first decent looking hotel and see what was available. Many rooms were available, the miltary discount took care of all the additional fees and taxes, and the room (#117 or #119 - I forget the exact number), was clean and ok for the price. The bed wasn't. After a whole night of not being able to sleep due how soft, no, destroyed would be more apt, that the mattress was, I was not happy. I thought the whole bed was that way, as my partner sleeps on an incredibly soft mattress and I thought she was just used to it. Nope, her side was wonderful I found out (way too late).

So check the room first, as we did every room after that on our trip to Napa. Oh, and no matter what the desk clerk tells you, it is NOT within walking distance to downtown. Unless you're a speed walker. Drive, as parking was plentiful in this incredibly quaint and fun town. This was just a quick one nighter here before we hit Healdsburg the next day, so I'm not sure if I'd stay here again or not. Maybe. But I'd check the bed first.

I enjoyed my stay at the Lodge. Calistoga is a right near the vineyards, even though it is more north of the valley. The room decor reminded me of the Renaissance hotels. Free Wifi. Belgium waffles with the continental breakfast. The pool is a little small but has a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The Lodge is quaint with a garden and looks nicer than the other hotels in the area. Staff was nice and helpful.

Overpriced motel-style accommodation - though good value in comparison to others in the Napa Valley. Ideally located for the wineries nearby. Room was dated but comfortable and the pool, spa and steam room were good; but it was the sparse and awful breakfast that really let this place down!

We reserved two rooms and didn't think they came close to the description on the web site. At least the bed was comfy but the pillows were worn out. The continental breakfast was sparse and there were no indoor tables. They had a construction crew going full blast when we arrived but there had been no mention of this when we reserved the room. We had ask for two rooms close together but they put us on opposite ends of the complex even though the couple checking in before us was my neighbor. I think you can do better for the price charged at this motel who describes itself as a "lodge".

Received an offer from Travelzoo for hotel and wine tour package. Was a great deal! Front desk person was so nice and really helpful with lots of ideas of things to do and where to eat. Great personality! Room was nice and clean. Stairs outside need some work but all in all, it was reasonable, clean and worth the trip. Beautiful area as well. Location is a little out of town but not too much.
