“Very basic, like most hotels in the area”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

First, this is an older though updated motor hotel, as are most of the hotels on Moonstone beach. This means cars park in front of your room window and there's no A/C - so your windows are open and you hear a lot of noise. Not unique to this place, but notable if you're looking for a relaxing getaway.

This is a really average hotel that is worth maybe half what they ask. During summer it's about $300 a night, when really it's only a $125 experience at best.

The check-in was easy, but they've hired young kids to staff the front desk, so it wasn't very professionally managed. The other people who work on the property were less than friendly when we said "hello" to them, basically ignoring us.

The breakfast is like a Hampton Inn free breakfast, with a cramped area to get food and coffee. Limited seating means you have to be careful about when you show up.

The room felt large due to the high ceiling and the bed was comfortable. It was the requirement to leave the windows open to get any sort of air/coolness that really spoiled the experience. The sound of every car on the road (the road is about 20 feet away), and every person going to their car or walking around the hotel grounds, traveled right into the room. Not restful at all.

Cambria is a nice town, but the hotel options on Moonstone are completely overpriced for what you get. I'd recommend staying in Morro Bay for its larger town or in San Simeon for the better rates. It's really not worth staying in Cambria itself.

Hope this review is helpful!

Room Tip: The only "good room" is probably an ocean one on the second floor. All the others are moto...

How this hotel gets the rating on trip advisor is beyond me. Miserable staff miserable room terrible breakfast. View out he front was my car and out the back was a fence. Where was the garden view? The photo shown for this hotel is very misleading as very few rooms can even see the sea. Stay away go somewhere else.
Cambria is a very nice place with a lot of squirrels running about and Dolphins can be seen out at sea. Plenty of other hotels to stay at.

Our family has enjoyed this wonderful FogCatcher Inn for the past 20 years. The location, the staff, and the fantastic rooms keep us coming back. I forgot to mention the breakfast which comes with the above. Web are not talking a simple continental breakfast but a full spread of eggs, sausage, fried potatoes to die for, plus cereals dry and hot, fresh fruit and waffles. The pool and spa areas are the perfect places to relax after long walks along the unspoiled beaches. To make this place even more desirable is the fact that two of the best restaurants are in walking distance of the FogCatcher. Every time we tell people where we are staying in Cambria and we mention the FogCatcher we are bombarded with wonder memories that they have had there. I write this review with enthusiasm but I am concerned that I might make it more difficult to get a reservation in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms are great for whatever you want. If you want a beautiful sunset or a full or partial ocea...

My new husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in February during our honeymoon roadtrip from San Francisco to LA. We arrived around 8pm, tired and hungry. The lady at reception was very helpful and immediately handed me a glass of champagne (said I looked like I could do with it!) She showed us a map of Cambria and quickly detailed all the local attractions and then pointed us in the direction of our room. We booked through Trailfinders and according to her, when she saw that we were Honeymooners she upgraded us! She sent us on our way with a great tip of where to eat that evening - The Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill, absolutely fantastic- and a bottle of champagne and 2 glasses. Our stay was perfect, clean rooms, cosy fire, flat screen TV and beautiful views of Moonstone Beach. Breakfast was self serve and there was a great variety. Would definitely go back if we are ever lucky enough to be in the area again!

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview room, views are fantastic

Stayed for one night on my way down from San Franciso to LA and it was a real treat. The location is perfect, very scenic, the hotel it self is very cosy and the grounds are kept very well. The staff was the highlight of the trip very friendly from the GM to the cleaning staff. Would have loved to stay a few more night and recommend the hotel highly for a stop over or a few day get away type of thing. Keep up the good job!

The location could not be better for moonstone beach just literally a 30 second walk away. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was good with two large beds and (very) tall ceilings, however we personally found the beds to be uncomfortable. We enjoyed the self serve breakfast as there is a good variety of food to choose from. Overall a nice stay and would recommend to anyone!

We really enjoyed the fogcatchers inn. The location was lovely for a walk along the beach and although out of town was within walking distance of the moonstone grill; which was great. The rooms were light and fine for one night. Breakfast the next morning was entertaining as it was all self serve (including making your own waffles). Staff were very friendly. Would recommend. Walk along the beach to see the harbour seals is definitely not one to miss while you're here.
