We stayed here for 1 night on our way up to the coast. Location is very good, right opposite a rocky beach, and with a nice restaurant, the Moonstone Grill just a few doors away. The town is a few minutes by car.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable, perhaps a little dated, and there was a slight fusty smell. Bathrooms are small with a very low shower, had to get into a limbo position to wash my hair!
Breakfast is fine, cereal and pastries, no toasted items.
Main criticism would be staff on reception are not too friendly or helpful. Checked us in with minimum interaction, when my husband asked for a corkscrew they said "No, we haven't got one". Surely this is a basic thing that a hotel should provide, but they made no apology.
Later my husband walked into reception to ask for directions and was asked "What do you want?" Just not very friendly. No fridge in the room either.

We visited at the height of tourist season, on a road that serves a couple dozen inns, yet found a surprising respite from the crowds.

Moonstone Beach is stunning, and well-served by a 2-plus-mile boardwalk. Traffic drives slowly and quietly on the road.

The second-floor room with a view (Room 2) above the front office is well-worth the price bump -- we reserved it in April and were told that that's pretty much the only way to get that room.

The red chairs on the front lawn are a nice touch for both reading, pondering the view and watching people drive with their convertible roofs down. The pool looked attractive (though we didn't use it).

Service was bright and helpful. When we had a late-evening noise issue next door (screaming), the desk help from one of the other inns in this group showed up in a timely way and took care of the matter.

As noted elsewhere, there are nicer places on Moonstone Beach, but nowhere close to this price range.

We got the best room in this budget inn: it's on the 2nd floor, with a window that faces the ocean. The Adirondack chairs that are on the lawn of the hotel also face the ocean and are perfect for watching the sunset or reading. Cambria is stunning: basically, the road along the ocean is mostly motels. There are definitely NICER hotels that this Castle Inn (so-so breakfast, small pool, other rooms have little to no view, and the walls are NOT soundproof), so if you can afford it, try another one, but if you're looking to save money, and you get that good room, then this is a great place to stay before visiting Hearst Castle the next day. The trail along the ocean is heavenly. And the town is only a 30 minute walk away, mostly on that trail.

We did have problems the first night, however, when an absolutely insane family was staying next door, and the woman in the family was screaming, and the kids banging around. When I called the front desk, I was transferred to another hotel a few blocks away since the Castle Inn doesn't staff the front desk after 9pm. They were apologetic and within 20 minutes someone arrived next door and told them they were being too noisy. After that all was quiet.

I'm sure this was a random event and nothing to do with the Castle Inn, but it did highlight how thin the walls are.

Room Tip: Make sure you get that 2nd story room with the view of the ocean from the room.

spent 3 nights here. Loved the moonstone beach location. Hotel was nice, clean rooms, like the ole motor inn hotels sometimes as it takes you back to the days when hotels were small and convienant to the roadways. Check in was quick and not overly welcoming, but I care more about the rooms and less about the check in gal!! Stay was great very peaceful and relaxing. That's why you stay here, moonstone beach and the casual atmosphere.. Overall would stay again. The wireless connection signal was intermmitant but no big deal..cont. breakfast was good.. cereal, bagels , pastries and the coffee was outstanding!

Room Tip: stay on the second floor

Stayed here for one night on our way up the coast. Had a top floor ocean view room. Like others have said it is nice but have to keep the drapes closed when in the room as right on walkway where others pass by on the way to there rooms. Didn't spend much time in room as Moonstone Beach is right there and spent most of the evening there. Room very clean and served our needs. Would stay again if in the area.
