“Relaxed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2013

We only spent one night but it was very relaxing and enjoyable. Highlights... GREAT location. Walking distance to restaurants and steps from beach. The chairs out on the lawn to watch sunset was perfect. We walked down to Moonstone bar and grill and had the clam chowder and a salad great..... Beds were comfortable and bathroom was cute and clean. Plenty of hot water and ice in the ice machine. Mini fridge in closet... look for it. The complimentary breakfast was ample. I totally recommend this cute clean and relaxing hotel.

I booked this a few weeks before a trip for a holiday weekend so availability was bit tight and this was one of the few close-to-the-beach rooms under $200. It's an old two story motel that's been fairly well maintained but does show its age. The room I booked was advertised as "ocean view" but that's a stretch. Most of the motel rooms face north and the beach is west. I could see the ocean if I stood right in front of the window looking northwest over the balcony that connects all the second floor rooms. But our room had two beds so there was no chair in front of the window and you'd have struggled to see the beach over the window sill and railing anyway. Despite the lack of a true ocean view, the motel is directly across the street from the beach so access is quick and simple. It's in a prime location on the beach boardwalk - a short walk to surfing or seal watching and a short drive to Cambria proper and to Hearst Castle.

The bathroom was tiny and shower stall was barely large enough for one adult. The mattress was a bit lumpy with a definite sound of springs as I laid down on it. The room and bathroom lacked space to set things down (e.g., toiletries, computer, ...). The room was very clean and the bathroom looked like it had a relatively recent update. I could hear some noise and voices from nearby rooms on the same floor and the one below. The included breakfast was OK but nothing lavish nor hot.

It's hard to rate this hotel fairly given it's rather pricey location. It seemed like a lot to pay for what we got but other hotels were fully booked or considerably more expensive. I was disappointed, especially with the "view". But it may have been the best room available for the money that I was willing to spend on that weekend. Another reviewer described it as an "average hotel in an incredible spot". I concur though I'd substitute the word motel for hotel.

Good value motel. Clean, spacious and incredible location right opposite the beach. We had a room on the top floor at the back - we could have watched the sunset over the sea from our window (we didn't - we stood on the beach boardwalk with everyone else - it was beautiful) The stairs to the top floor were right outside our room, but we were not disturbed by people accessing their rooms. Breakfast is collected from the breakfast room - plenty to choose from and no limit to how much you can eat. This was perfect for our one night stop over as we drove from Monterey to LA, just one turning off the CA-1.

Room Tip: The room at the top of the stairs at the back has a great view of the sunset

Thank you for your very nice comments. I am glad that you enjoyed the sunset from the boardwalk on Moonstone Beach. It is also nice to hear that the breakfast selection was plentiful. There are so many hotels to choose from in the area and we were very happy that you stayed with us.
I hope you return again when traveling the Central Coast.

Castle Inn is really just an average hotel in an incredible spot. When you arrive at the hotel your immediate thought will be of the 60's hotel. The lobby is everything that you would think of, a bit dark and the front desk is great. I do really like the hotel, but I really want you to know what you are getting yourself into.
We got the room in the back under the stairs and I was a little bit scared, but the room was not bad. The rooms are clean and look fine. The bathroom is really small and the shower was really short. Were people just really short 50 years ago? We liked the breakfast in the morning and it was enough to keep us going until late lunch.
The location of the hotel is great and you can walk to the restaurant just down the street and the beach just across the street. The beach across the street is a great mix of beach and rocks. There are seals, crabs and squirrels all over the place and it is really fun for the whole family.

Again, good hotel and great location. Watch the video on hovidre.com if you want to see more.

Room Tip: Get a room upstairs in the back if you can

Stayed at the Castle Inn just after Labor Day so the $109.00 rate seemed like a fair price for the lovely location (right accross the street from the ocean, boardwalk and sunset view), the clean and comfortable room, and decent continental breakfast that included excellent coffee. We had a lower level room which did not face the ocean, but it was convenient to have our car right outside the door. The bathroom was kind of small but very clean and adequate. For dinner we walked next door to the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill and had a fantastic Grilled Yellow Tail dinner.
The Castle Inn was a perfect stop for us on our road trip up Pacific Coast Highway. We would gladly go back again and spend more time there.

Room Tip: The lower level room was convenient to our car and felt very safe.

A nice, clean, safe place with the Pacific just across the street. Great board walks to use to see the sea otters and seals. It does not have A/C, but does not need it, just open the windows and enjoy

Room Tip: second floor is best view of the sunset over the Pacific

Thank you for your staying with us. I was glad to see that you have stayed with us multiple times in the past and that we met your expectations. You were lucky to see the seals, they can be so hard to view because they are not always so abundant. We look forward to a future visit from you and hope that you enjoy the holiday season.

I booked this Hotel after researching on TripAdvisor and i am glad i booked this hotel. It was my Birthday and the stay here was most enjoyable of my entire trip. check in was fairly quick and i was given room on the top floor with Sea View. It was a Big Room with a Big Bathroom and very modern. there is a small swimming pool if you dont like to go to the sea, nice lush garden right along the sea with relaxing chairs, so you can have a little sunbath.
Breakfast is available on ground level in a nice little room. it was minimalist yet good enough.
there is a small trail along the beach in front of the Hotel where you can have your morning/ evening walks. it is just so wonderful. spent just one night wished i had spent a couple more.
Will be Back Definitely.

Thank you for staying with us for your Birthday Celebration. I am glad that you enjoyed your accommodations and our friendly staff. I would have to agree that the walk along Moonstone Beach during the evening is one of the most spectacular things to do in the area. I appreciate your comments and hope that you stay with us again soon.
