Do not use your credit card here. They have severe security issues and third party billings on credit cards used at the desk. If you can use cash or check this is a pleasant place but parts are very old, with thin walls. Do not expect much help from the staff, especially with questionable charges.

This situation is a misunderstanding. Don A reserved three rooms for late November, two through our hotel (on 9/3/13 and 10/11/13) and one through Expedia (also on 9/3/13). When the guest arrived, he said he had not made a reservation through Expedia; in fact, we are in possession of the Expedia reservation request. The guest paid Expedia, which then gave us a "third party" Expedia credit card number to which we charged the room per our contract with Expedia. This is not a security issue. In fact, we lost revenue by doing this guest the favor of cancelling his third (unneeded) room upon arrival. We did everything we could to please Don A and regret that this guest found it necessary to accuse us of charging him improperly.

Our stop in Cambria was the culmination of our 40 yr, wedding anniversary with my family before facing the REAL world again. The rooms are comfortable, spacious grounds are lovely. However we were terribly dissapointed with the restaurant although food was good , service was okay. It irked us to be OVERcharged for large party of 7 then on top was added their hefty gratuity. The bar ambiance with live music was delightful.

We had the good fortune to purchase an amazing Travelzoo Deal for Cambria Pines Lodge with room, dinner and a whole bunch of other things included. We paid a small, additional fee to bring out dog with us. It was a bit crazy at check-in as they were having their Holiday Market which consisted of holiday items for purchase. I was a little disappointed that as a hotel guest I would be required to pay to enter the market, so we chose not to go in. The place was beautifully decorated and the staff was super friendly. I was disappointed that both Friday and Saturday night the bands in the Lodge bar were similar classic rock bands. Both bands, while different members, sang pretty much the same songs. Also while the staff was friendly, they were severely understaffed in the bar on Saturday night and could have pulled some staff from the restaurant to accommodate the patrons in the lounge. Our room was always clean and while there was tremendous hustle and bustle on the property at this time, it was always very quiet around our room. We were staying in one of the cottages and we did notice on they day we were leaving that there was a large gap between the floor/foundation and the wall near one of the doors where critters and cold air was getting in. I wondered why it was so drafty. All in all, it was an awesome experience and we will return to Cambria Pine Lodge in the future.

Not a main stream hotel by any means- but none the worse for that. The rooms, though dated, are functional, the beds comfortable- and the open (reconstituted log) fire adds that 'wow' factor (especially for a Brit- health and safety would never permit that here!). Nothing fazed the dining room staff- there were 3 of us to seat.. then 2, we wanted to move tables... then we didn't- all taken in their stride. The barman knew his beers, allowed 'tasters', cracked jokes- the singer performed ably for well over an hour without a break: a great atmosphere.
Some points against:
It is rather far from the town, so you'll probably need to eat in.
Some of the rooms are up stairs (no lift).
The bedroom blocks are away from the main building and the paths not too well marked.
And for:
The food is good and reasonably priced.
The Christmas Fete lights are spectacular.
The staff are friendly and welcoming.
The bar area invites socialising and features live music.
The gardens are great in winter- and must be amazing in summer.
So- if you want 5-star luxury, or have mobility problems, this may not be for you. If you want something a bit different- then give it a try.

Room Tip: If you don't like stairs, ensure you have a ground-floor room.

Have stayed many times and always a Great experience. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms roomy, clean and well appointed. Bathrooms large with marble tops tub and separate shower. Very clean. We stay in rooms across the road from main lodge. They are like stand alone duplexes. They have fireplaces and private small patios. Parking right in front of your room and very quiet. Room 901 or 902 are easy stroll to lodge for dinner or an after dinner drink in cozy lounge. Absolutely recommend.

Room Tip: I'm sure all rooms are great. We like rooms across road from main lodge.

BEWARE of the bait and switch scam that Cambria Pines Lodge employs! We bought a Travel Zoo getaway for Cambria Pines Lodge (the "bait") and when attempting to make the reservation for dates that were NOT listed as blackout dates on the coupon, was told that Cambria Pines Lodge extended the blackout dates (the "switch") further than what was listed on the coupon as it looked like they "may be able to fill the rooms without booking people who have TravelZoo getaways"! Evidently they only honor the Travel Zoo Getaway when it doesn't look like they can fill their rooms. Nowhere on the coupon does it state that blackout dates may be extended or that they would only honor the coupon if it looked like they could not fill their rooms for a certain time period. (They did have rooms available until I told the agent that I had a Travel Zoo coupon and then was told that the blackout dates had been extended).

This is not the way we do business. If you really did receive the response you quoted in your review, then please contact Becky Evans at the hotel immediately so we can straighten out this situation. When setting up a Travelzoo Local Getaway, I open ALL rooms on the property through the voucher expiration date--with the exception of blackout dates which are due to holidays or lack of availability. We will be happy to book you into the room type which you purchased if the date is not blacked out due to a holiday period or general lack of availability. Thank you for your feedback.

We purchased a two-night vacation package on Travelzoo upgrading to a suite when all the smaller cottage rooms sold out. What Moonstone Hotel Properties offered is not what we got. Unfortunately I didn't do my homework! I would have requested, insisted on a room away from the roads that were noisy in the mornings with delivery trucks and maintenance carts. The room was older; our expectations of a Suite were not met. The room's view was of the driveway although we did enjoy seeing the pines nearby. The included dinner was truly disappointing!! When we checked in three specials appeared on a sign outside the restaurant. I wanted the halibut that was apparently from Morro Bay. A few hours later while seated in a very wary dining room our server told us that they were out of the specials. Okay, so next we wanted roasted vegetables or dishes with roasted vegetables but were told that they were also out of those. Really frustrated, we left and drove down to the village where we enjoyed an incredibly delicious dinner at Robin’s, which we HIGHLY recommend. We lost out on our "complimentary" dinner but managed to enjoy a glass of the Castoro house wine. The following night our key cards didn't work. They were replaced but didn't work the next day. Management should focus their attention on the details. For example, there was a squished silverfish in a picture framed on the wall. And we should have known that the fireplaces were gas, not natural wood burning which would require providing many, many cords of wood. I also wondered how often they steam clean their carpets and cloth covered sofas...I had high expectations which only resulted in huge disappointments. ON the bright side, we loved the gardens and the trails especially the one down the hill into town. Finally consider bringing you own food if you are vegan, or like fresh organic produce. Breakfast -- on your own in town! We would like to give the CPL another try someday but will lower our expectations hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Oh, and we missed those wonderful Christmas lights that so many travelers look forward to seeing! Next time??? Do your homework!!!! Submitted by a middle school teacher and former tour director.

Room Tip: Forest view rooms away from any and all roads through the grounds. 2nd story preferred if in Suites.

Thank you for your feedback. Our suites are described and pictured online in a very straightforward and accurate way. We are sorry our popular restaurant was so busy that we ran out of some items the first night you were here. We would have been happy to reserve a table for you on your second night at an available time. We do offer a Vegan Grilled Portobello Steak on our menu. Sometimes a key card is demagnetized by keeping it too close to credit cards or a cell phone. Most of our guests like our hot breakfast buffet; we are sorry you felt differently. We do hope to see you again the next time you visit Cambria.
