Canon de la Vieja Lodge

We were bumped from our originally booked resort by Swiss Travel and found this a very poor substitute.Staff were not friendly but we did have a couple of good guides on some of excursions to park and riding. Rooms were dirty, with no phone, no tv or other amenities, not even shampoo. There is not a good view of anything, anywhere at the resort. Cabins are kindly called rustic, that is code for substandard. The pool and hot tub were dirty and cold with no jets working. The food was edible, but as costly as at the best of resorts. I would never recommend this resort. Good idea to take a flashlight as my wife fell off the unfinished side walk on the poorly lit street and ended up needing medical attention which some kindly people drove us to in Liberia. Other than our stay at this resort we had a fabulous time and absolutely loved every other aspect of our trip to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Don't go here as there are no good rooms. Take a flashlight and a phone otherwise you need to wa...

Nice clean hotel close by the Ricon de la Vieja national park.

There is a nice pool, and the rooms are quiet, clean and relaxing.

However it is a big hotel, with lots of cabins, so if you are looking for a small friendly place with personalised service, this may not be ideal.

The hotel is good: nice room, nice pool (bit cold), the spa looks great (we didn't use it, so I don't if it is good)
There are some activities, but it seemed too expensive for what it was.

But the staff made it a poor experience:
- At the reception, the lady at the desk just said what she had to say, but when we asked for some info about the area, she only said 'the park'. No effort at all.
- At the pool bar, the bartender was watching television. He saw us, but didn't asked what we wanted. We had to call him. We asked for Mojito, he said it wasn't possible to make that one, without any explanation. So we ordered something easier (cuba libre) to make. He just went back to watch the television for 5 more minutes. And then he made the cocktails.
Is it that difficult to serve your customers instead of watching TV?
Some minutes later, he left the bar and didn't return for at least an hour (we left after an hour).
So we could get any drinks, because he was the only one. A bit strange and bad service...
- At the buffet: there were more than 6 people working there, but no-one said we had to give our room number. So after our breakfast, we left the restaurant. One of the staff ran after us and said annoyed we had to give our room nr.
- The swimming pool looks great and it is (a bit cold, but OK), but the jacuzzi at the top of the pool was so dirty! Full of bees and larves! I don't mind if there are some leaves or insects in it, but please clean the pool.
- When we checked out, it was even too much to give a smile.

It is a pity that the staff wasn't friendly, otherwise the hotel would have been good!
We found a scorpion in our room, but OK, that's possible when you are located in the nature!

We did the horseback riding, zipline, lunch, and tubing down the river. Great fun! Excellent staff to help you along the way. They are working on adding newer amenities and it is very gorgeous. Lunch was delicious. River rafting was fantastic! After all of it, you soak in a hot pool and can go get a massage if you'd like. Definitely recommend it.

This hotel offers a lot of excursions like canopy, horse riding, rafting, ...
The rooms are nice and have airco. The staff is very friendly.

If you stay here, you certainly need to do the canopy tour. It is very nice.

if you look for adventure, book a room in any close by hotel and take a shuttle to this hotel. the adventure part is there but the rooms are below average, really bad beds and it seems that the little bungalow hasnt been cleaned since last high season.. sticky shower, musky smell, unclean glasses, broken window in the bthroom etc. the restaurant is also a place to avoid.

Canyon Lodge was an interesting spot as there were no TV's in room but you really did not need one. Lots to do, Bungalows were clean and very rustic. there is lots do do there, we went horse back riding which was enjoyable. We were actually allowed to run the horses. Jimmy our guide was great. He could not speak english but we still could communicate. There is zip lining and a spa as well. It is close to the Liberia airport. We stayed there two nights. First night was when we arrived, we did a week long eco tour and we stayed there on our last night. It has a nice pool area and the staff were great. This is rated as a 3 star resort. Food was ok. Rooms are air conditioned.
