My teenage son and I spent four days at La Anita in January and had a wonderful time. Hosts Ana and Pablo went out of their way to make us feel welcome from the minute we arrived. The cabins were spotless and included thoughtful amenities such as toiletries and an in-room fridge. In such a unspoiled wilderness area such items seemed truly luxurious! All the people who work with Ana and Pablo are local, and Finca La Anita strives to showcase the talents and skills of the residents of Colonia Libertad, which results in an intimate and truly educational experience for the visitor. The food is fresh and delicious and focuses on produce from La Anita and the surrounding area. The coffee is to die for, particularly the cardamom scented variety, my personal favorite. Lying in bed at night or resting in a hammock one can hear the hummingbirds and other wildlife in the surrounding forest area; it is just magical. Ana and Pablo sent us on some wonderful trips during our short stay. We enjoyed a hike through a pristine cloud forest preserve to visit waterfalls and swim in beautiful blue thermal pools, accompanied by two friendly and helpful local guides. We visited a local inn where we were able to assist the local chef with making a special ricotta cheese, even milking the cow first. Later we rode horses in the shadow of Rincon de la Vieja where we had wonderful views, returning to a traditional Costa Rican luncheon featuring fresh fish. Perhaps best of all, our hosts were eager to share the work on their farm with visitors and answer any questions. They were the best hosts I have ever experienced in years of traveling all over the world.
For anyone interested in botany or ecology, or who seeks to experience the cloudforest microclimate around Rincon de la Vieja, Finca La Anita is well worth the stay. An unforgettable experience. We hope to return soon!

We have just returned from La Anita and loved our three day stay. Wish we could have stayed longer. Ana and Pablo are the best of hosts as they make you feel like family. They arranged for wonderful tours for us and we met the nicest people, saw plenty of spectacular flora and wildlife (my favorite: a nesting hummingbird) and beautiful waterfalls. The cabins are private, very spacious, offer comfortable beds and a modern bathroom and we just loved to "hang out" in the hammock and listen to nature's sounds. The meals were the most affordable we ate in Costa Rica, yet the most delicious and plentiful (we ate the vegetarian dishes only) and we particularly devoured the homemade ginger lemonade, heart of palm salad and homemade taro chips from freshly harvested ingredients. We will be back!

If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing and beautiful place to stay in Rincon de La Vieja I could not recommend the Anita Rainforest Ranch enough! It is not for those looking for a wild adventure or for luxury accommodation but for people wanting to have more of a feel for the real Costa Rica. The owners will treat you like family and arrange meals with as many organic vegetables they can provide from their farm. They also provide a free tour of the farm. Hiking, birding, riding, cooking, yoga can all be arranged by the owners. The accommodation is very comfortable in spacious wonderful wooden cabins with your own porch, hammocks and lovely views. Better to have a rental car when staying here but transport can be arranged by the owners.

Room Tip: All rooms are very similar and all comfortable!

We just returned from 5 days with our hosts Pablo and Anna and our 7th grade Spanish Class. The Finca (farm) is unlike anywhere I have ever stayed. Our hosts were so gracious with excellent English and the villagers could not have been more welcoming. Each cabin has a modern bathroom and US electricity.

It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Posting this review a bit late - we stayed at La Anita in February 2012, meant to write a review and it's just now, as we are planning another visit to Costa Rica and relying heavily on Trip Advisor once again, that I am reminded to do this. I can only agree 100% with the positive reviews here. Pablo and Anita are special people - we stayed 4 nights and it was the most authentic, interesting, and relaxing part of our 2 week trip. They arranged our trips for us, including the guided tour of Rincon with guide Javier (see photo) who was so good - very knowledgeable yet funny too. The cabins were excellent, loved the screens letting in nature, the bathroom was spacious and unique, bed was quite comfortable. The food and dining situation was lovely, either Pablo or Anita made a point to be at every meal and would visit with the guests. We met another couple there and Pablo arranged for the four of us to have dinner with the local family in town who does this. It was so fun! Food was delicious and cooked over a beautiful wood burning stove. We asked Pablo if we should bring some wine, and he said sure, the family probably wouldn't mind. Well, her husband was home from his job outside the village for a few days, and they helped us finish off our two bottles, it was like a little party. Their charming daughter tried to get us to play some word games to help us learn a little more Spanish.
We did have a pretty strange horseback riding tour in a nearby village they arranged - we don't ride much, the guide spoke zero English and my Spanish is weak, it started to pour and didn't stop, the trail was steep and muddy, like riding in a stream - fortunately we managed to communicate our need to turn back, and the tour ended with a fabulous lunch in a lovely small restaurant at the stables.

I wish Pablo and Anita much success in their cocoa business, and if you are lucky enough to choose La Anita, please send them our regards.
