Hotel Borinquen Mountain Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 March 2013

I just spent 8 days in Costa Rica, 4 of the at the Borinquen. The area the hotel is in is stunning and remote, about 1 HR from Libera, on a pretty good dirt road.

The hotel is manicured like a golf course (which is a little odd since the natural un-manicured surroundings are so much nicer then any gold course could be). We did a zip line and horse back ride which were excellent, and led by good guides, and they have a really nice sauna - but the problems are so huge I can't suggest going - and would never consider going back.

1. getting around- our room was about 1/2 mile up a hill from the food and pool - too far to carry wet or hungry kids. they don't allow you to bring cars on the property, and provide a golf cart service, which would be fine - if they actually showed up. you have to call reception to get a cart, many times when we called reception no one would pick up, or if we were at the pool, they had no phone or staffer around to call the cart, or we'd have to wait 20 minutes to get a cart. we decided to ignore the no car rule after a day and just drove where we wanted.

2. food - this is the biggest issue. probably the worst food I have ever paid for. really, really bad. because this is an 1HR away from anything - this is a big issue. with the exception of one very competent waiter, the staff was poorly trained - it would take 30 minutes just to get eggs in the morning, and at times was served by a waiter with an open sore on his hand. the dinning room itself is really dated, feels like a catskill resort trying to do a formal spanish dinning room. by the end of the trip we just decided to eat the food that came pre-packaged - mostly cereal and yogurt, and also considered driving the 1 hour to town to escape the slop they served.

3. maintance - the room itself was fairly well maintained, but had a mystery smell coming from some place near the mini bar, the shower had no pressure (we had to take baths), and the other the family we traveled with's room was infested by a termite swarm the last night (I'm not talking a few bugs in the room during the swarm, I'm talking thousand's, in the bed, luggage, everyplace). They were given a new room after someone from house keeping showed up with a can of raid and realized she was out matched. the grounds really need an update as well - astroturf around the pool really worn out, all the fan blades in the dinning room are broken off.

We tried to temper our expectations of our accommodations considering where we were traveling, but the high quality of the other places we stayed in Costa Rica just highlighted what a mess this place was.

We came here for a day trip that included a horseback ride, zip-lining, lunch, and a few hours at the Spa/mudbaths/pool.

The horseback ride was a typical tourist trek with unresponsive horses who just plod up the well-beaten path, but the views were excellent and I felt very safe on the horses. It was a fine ride for those who do not ride regularly.

The zip lining was perfect with experienced, helpful guides in a green jungle. Great views. Very safe.

We had a very tasty lunch with great service.

The afternoon was spent at the natural sauna, mud baths, hot springs, and pool. The pool was huge. My kids loved coating themselves with warm mud and playing in the big pool.

This is a perfect place for 1-2 days or just a day trip.

If you are touring Costa Rica, we highly recommend a few days at this wonderful getaway. Beautifully kept grounds, wonderful dining, spa, mud baths and horseback riding. We did it all in our two day stay. It got quite breezy at times but the cool mist coming off of the nearby clouds over the volcano were welcome. Overall very comfortable temperature wise. Very quiet and tranquil, not the spot if you are looking for late night partying.

We are spending 3 months in Costa Rica in a rental house right on the ocean. It is just gorgeous. However, after 2 months we decided we wanted a little change in scenery and weather, somewhere just a little cooler. I booked one night at Borinquen and as soon as we arrived, my husband - a very picky person - said, "Let's see if we can stay a second night." Not only were we able to book another night, but we were upgraded. Our room was just beautiful. Quiet, lovely view, 4 poster bed, very spacious (sitting area). Truly perfect. We couldn't believe how comfortable the bed was. The grounds are so well maintained, it is a very special spot. My husband did the zipline - his first at age 70!, which he very much enjoyed. And both days we spent a lot of time in the sauna, the hot mud and pools - your skin really does look and feel softer and smoother (actual fumeroles or hot pots are right there for you to see!). We had a delicious lunch at the little spot between the pool and hot tub. My suggestion would be to have a very late lunch and bring some munchies and drinks with you for the evening. A full, substantial breakfast is included. We did not engage in the other activities, i.e. horseback riding, etc. But everyone we spoke to enjoyed their treks immensely. People are brought from hotels during the day, but it never felt crowded and you have lots of time to have the place pretty much to yourself a great deal of the time. The room we booked looked lovely, the one we were upgraded to was fabulous, but if you can afford the suite, wow, they are located way at the top of the hill and have jacuzzis as well. No problem with the hills, you can be driven by golf cart anytime, to anywhere. We are well travelled and enjoy beautiful spots. Borinquen advertises "rustic elegance" and it delivers. Elegance, beauty, wildlife, adventure and relaxation. We loved it, highly recommend it and would return. By the way, it is like a 1 hour 15 min. drive from the Liberia airport. It is so easy and close and feels so very far away from everything. It is a perfect place to begin or end your visit to Costa Rica.

It was a very good time we had in Rincon de La Vieja. At the Borinquen we stayed two nights, in a Superior Bungalow. The Bungalow was really beautiful, I felt immediately comfortable as I went in. The bathroom is very luxurios, clean and you will have everything you need.
The stuff was very helpful and nice. They have a good restaurant, and you will eat there because the next place is a long bumpy drive away, you don't need a reservation. Bring a little flexibility as vegetarian. They didn't have every vegimeal ready, because they have to transport all the igredients up there. But they had a good alternative to make, so I was happy.
The wine was indeed good, which is not the normal in Costa Rica.
We didn't do any tour organised by the hotel, we just asked them how we get to the next entrance of the National Park, and they explained us a nice shortcut.
It's again a bumpy ride to the borinquen, like in most places we went on our trip. But a very beautiful place. It's so different from the coast and also from the midland cloud forests, I loved it.
Ah yes, there is also the hot mud and the hot springs. Cover yourself in mud and go for a walk on the short pathways around the hot springs. Just nice.

My husband and I spent the first 2 nights of our honeymoon at Borinquen. It was a lovely place--difficult roads to get there but great scenery. It's set back very remotely in the mountain side and the grounds are gorgeous. We were there in dry season but everything on the resort gorunds was green and gorgeous. Each room is a little villa-super cute and feels very special. They are each set apart so you never have to worry about noise. I loved hearing all the birds and wildlife in the trees around us each day. One of our favorite parts was their large natural sauna--a very unique experience! The rooms were nice and fit the scene of the surroundings very well. The staff were good and we never had any problems during our stay.

We recently stayed in two of the rooms at this resort and had a super time. I have to mention the excellent service Ricardo provided. He made sure we had all we needed and were comfortable. When my son was not feeling well one day he went out of his way to ask how he was. We also rode with Mario who was also kind and very informative about the local environment. Thanks !!! We saw a local marimba band perform at dinner one night. We have been to other hotels in the area but will be coming back to this one for sure.
