This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we spent one week at the Borinquen and another on the ocean. I chose the Borinquen mostly based on reviews from this site and we were not disappointed. Our stay was in December and we rented a junior suite, which is totally worth the money for the views and the privacy. We were located on the highest point and were able to park our car up there, as a walk to and from the restaurants and other facilities is way too steep to do throughout the day. Our room had living room and separate bedroom with a king bed. The TV was broken when we arrived but quickly fixed. The furnishings are ok-somewhat dated. The bathroom was enormous and beautiful, but the water pressure was terrible and there was no way to ever fill the gigantic tub as the hot water ran out and it took over an hour to get to 2/3 full. Th bathroom needs several more hooks for hanging items.
The property is the reason to stay here. It is a fantastic working ranch, with about 12,000 acres of rolling hills, waterfalls, jungle, and pasture that horses and cows, and water buffalo roam. We took advantage of all their activities and saw it all both on horseback and ATV. Ask for Luis for you guide. He was fantastic and made the adventure amazing with his ability to spot monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife as we rode through the jungle. There is a zip line that is also not to be missed.
The resort bills itself as a spa which is why I am only giving 4 stars. While we did not purchase any spa treatments, there are three thermal pools and volcanic mud for general use. The outdoor showers were cold water and the "hot" pool was almost scalding, which is only a sign of improper maintenance. There is a natural steam room by the pool which is literally falling apart. My husband opened the door and it fell right off the hinges!
There are many criticisms about the food, but we thought it was really good and were never disappointed. However, the service was very uneven, especially in the evening dining room. This is very fancy in decor, but there was never a clear head waiter, language was sometimes a problem and food often took a very long time to arrive. With some proper service training this can really be an excellent dining experience. That said, the staff was so friendly and attempted to make every effort to please...they just need better training and in some cases, more people as the pool snack bar was often understaffed. If you drink, wine and beer are the better choices as we were never able to order a mixed drink that had any alcohol in it.
With some attention to detail, this property has every chance of being a 5 star resort and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Spend the extra on a junior suite...the views alone are worth it.

My wife, daughter and I spent 3 nights at Hotel Borinquen. The setting is a 10!. The activities and staff that run the activities are good. The food staff are good. We zip-lined, rode horses, did the mud baths, relaxed by the pool. All was good. New Years celebration (band, dancing, fireworks) was fun.

Problems: Check-in time is 3PM. We arrived about that time and were given the keys to our room. We did not have any towels and a lamp on the night stand was broken. I called the desk about the towels and lamp. A worker took the lamp and said he would be back. We never saw the lamp again. Long story short we finally got towels around 5:30 PM just in time to freshen up before dinner. The next day we got up early and did several activities. Returning to our room (needing a shower) approx. 3PM to find out it had not been cleaned. I called the desk and was told they would send housekeeping up to our villa. At 4PM I went to the lobby to again ask that our room be cleaned. Long story short - it was finally cleaned approx. Housekeeping was poor our entire stay. Front Desk administration very average for a "resort." Never felt the front desk understood the value of taking good care of guests.

We added Borinquen to our itinerary as our last night stay before flying out of LIberia because our son wanted to see a volcano. As it turned it out excursions there were cancelled due to volcanic activity. Nonetheless the setting was stunning. Our son loved the pool with swim-up bar. The thermal hotsprings and mud was a hit with my wife/son. I enjoyed a horseback trek in the morning to see some cascades and was also rewarded with views of howler monkeys. All of the staff was helpful and a pleasure. The setting is unique and gorgeous. There are numerous activities to enjoy. Many people combined the horseback trek with zip-lining. Along with the monkeys there were numerous toucan viewings. Happy we chose this place.

Our first time to Borinquen was three years ago and was an awesome experience. But something has dramatically changed. I bought four spa packages totaling nearly $1,000 for a 50 minute massage, body scrub, full facial and aloe body wrap. The spa began with the body scrub which was very nice until we went to take a shower to wash off and the water was freezing cold. I was told by the staff that they have had a problem with hot water for a long time as if I should grin and bear it. Sorry, no thank you I am hear to relax not freeze my butt off.

I guess it also bears noting that the hot springs/thermales were not hot. They were luke warm at best and absolutely filthy.

Before going to dinner we ordered pina coladas for the room. After two phone calls they arrived at a price of $10 each.

I have learned that the administration has recently changed here and hopefully the owner reads this. As a business owner myself I would fire this management team and start over. I am willing to bet that the administration will try to defend this somehow, but there is no defense at all.

The hotel is out of date rooms are old and outdated, but clean and decent maintained, setting is beautiful, sauna and hot pools completely run down, no maintenance at all, is even dirty, they do not have enough personnel to keep pools running at proper temperatures. I like the place but will not return, better options for hot water pools and spa in La Fortuna.

We just spent two weeks at Borinquen and absolutely loved the experience. The staff, from management on down were exceptional and did everything they could to make our stay memorable.

The facilities are second to none with great adventures from zip lining to horseback riding to hiking to some amazing waterfalls.

The bungalows are well appointed large with exceptional views of the mountains and cloud forests.

Weather was perfect. In the 80's during the day and low 70's at night.

Restaurants were good but could use a larger selection. Prices were fair and room service was exceptional with the same pricing as the restaurants.

You definitely need an suv to get into the hotel. Most cars would suffer some damage on the road into the resort. The road is safe but rough! The drive in is an experience in itself with fabulous views.

This is a great resort for couples or families looking for outdoor adventures or quiet peace full romantic getaways.

Room Tip: The Delux bungalow is amazing.
