“An excellent place to eat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2008

Caruso's Cuisine Restaurant is THE place to go, especially if you do not want to be along with a lot of other tourists or a loud crowd.
You could miss this restaurants location, so know it's on a side street and not on the beach. The restaurant is on the smaller side, and truly a gem. Most gem's (to me) usually are quaint, provide excellent service and the freshest food. The Food at Caruso's could not have been better. Proportions were just right. My ceasar salad was fresh, crisp and tasty. The thin crust pizza we ordered was a perfect crust for my preference. If you like a thick, doughy crust, order something else, like the scallops (it was the special of the day), large and fresh. Dessert, we ordered the lemon sorbet. it was refreshing, tasty and served creatively in a frozen lemon shell.
Go here, you'll love it!

“Everything we expected and more!”

A phenomenal evening! Lucas and Jen were wonderfully welcoming and - there was David, cooking right next to our table. The food was fabulous and beautifully presented. Excellent advice on the wine and food pairing added to the enjoyment of the meal. The best Italian food and service I have had anywhere! David even stopped cooking to come out and say goodbye to us as we were leaving. Don’t miss this dining experience!!

“Wonderful small place for Tuscan cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2008

Caruso's is a wonderful Tuscan style restaurant near the Esplanade in Capitola. Everything including the tiramisu (which the owner and chef describes with the classic light kisses of his fingertips as "my baby") is beautifully prepared in-house. In fact, they appear to do a pretty brisk business with pizzas to go to nearby hotels.

Service is friendly and engaging, and well paced to provide food at the right times without making the meal seem hurried.

The quality of food was outstanding. Shellfish were fresh and steamed to perfect texture. The pesto was light and smooth without being oily, sausage just peppery enough for zest and the gorgonzolla mellow and warm. The tiramisu is indeed the owner's baby, but the tartufo and the crema catalana were equally good and mirrored the owner's style: rich, zesty, mellow where called for without ever being over-powering or poorly balanced.

There are only seven tables so reservations are not accepted; my party of four was clearly pretty lucky to walk in mid-week in June 2008 at 7PM and snap up a ready table.

Comparisons with Bella Roma (another fine Italian restaurant in Capitola) are inevitable. I don't find it possible to rate one more highly than the other. Both prepare exquisite food, breads and desserts. One is Roman, the other Tuscan so where you might choose to eat may depend on your preferences. Both owners are the chefs and are very welcoming, and the atmosphere of their establishments reflect their personalities. Bella Roma is quieter, though by no means solemn or silent. Caruso's is more raucous and energetic. Your choice of establishment may depend on your mood or the occasion. Both very obviously have a loyal regular clientele. Clearly, if you have a party of more than four, Bella Roma is your choice as Caruso's has only four tables all told. I suppose you could walk in with a larger party, but you may have to wait a bit or appear earlier or later in the dinner hours. If reservations are important, Bella Roma is the only choice.

one of the best meals i've had in a long time. everything was exquisite from the homemade buffalo mozzarella and prociutto to the homemade gnocchi with scallops and pancetta in a basil cream sauce, and oh my god the tiramasu was like a cloud of heaven! great wine list too.
