“Spectacular sunset from our patio”
Reviewed 13 November 2008

The Tamarack Beach Resort is the perfect romantic weekend get-away destination.

We've stayed here six times and love the oceanview rooms with their large, clean, nicely furnished rooms . It's also nice to soak away your troubles in one of two jacuzzis they have on-site.

Each ocean view room comes with its own luxurious balcony overlooking Tamarack Beach. I always bring my camera and once lucked into an awesome sunset shot with seven pelicans flying in formation in the middle of the photo.

Walk across the street down a ramp and you're at a nice wide beach that's great for sunning, playing or walking, with your favorite companion.

Carlsbad has a nice vibe, with miles of beaches, as well as plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. The nearby Flower Fields are a colorful attraction in Spring and Legoland, a fun amusement park for families with smaller kids, is really close by, too

For food and beverage, I recommend Pizza Port on Village Center Drive. If you like beer and some of the best pizza around, then you'll love this place. They have an extensive beer menu with most of the beer actually brewed within the premises.

I also recommend Kings Fish House. Decent prices, good service and some of the freshest fish around.

Carlsbad is close to another of my favorite places, La Jolla Cove. This is a breathtaking spot where the sea has carved many caves in the side of the sandstone cliffs.

La Jolla Cove is even more interesting at low tide, where you can walk through a sea cave or two and make your way across many interesting rock formations.

If you enter the Cave Store, you can take a self-guided tour of the inside of a large sea cave, Sunny Jim's Cave. Tour costs a fee.

The rooms are much larger then expected- I got a double queen room and it was huge! I got an oceanview room and it is absolutely lovely. I thought I'd be bothered by being on the 1st floor but I wasn't, as there are at least 6 feet between the sidewalk and the balcony. Parking was free, which was new to me after staying at different places during this trip. Also free WiFi, which is a must nowadays. 711 is up the street, there is a fridge in the room. The air-conditioner worked well. The pool and hot-tub were also nice. There seemed to be lots of families staying here, no young couples really. I would still recommend for a short beach getaway as i feel it ended up being a good value.

Just got back from a two night stay at the Tamarack resort. It was a spur of the moment trip and I had never even seen this hotel. I was very pleasantly surprised by the location and the hotel. The rooms were quite spacious. We had an ocean view room. As another reviewer mentioned, the ocean is across a very busy street so we couldn't hear the ocean even at night.
The pool was very appealing especially for those with families. One thing I really liked, there were two spas, one for families and another for adults only.
The breakfast was as expected. It was called a continental breakfast so I wasn't expecting much. It included fruit, muffins, bagels, cereal, and yogurt. There was a toaster available to toast your bagels.
The staff was very friendly and accomodating.
A wide selection of movies are available to choose from. There is no charge and no limit.

We stayed 2 nights at the Tamarack on a weekend. The location directly across from the beach is excellent. The grounds of the Tamarack are beautiful and kept very clean. The room was also very clean and had been recently redecorated--so recently that it still smelled of fresh paint! We appreciated having a mini-fridge for drinks and snacks. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. We had a couple of complaints, though. The showerhead was very low, especially for my tall husband. Breakfast was a disappointment. First, we had to figure out where it was since there are no clear signs. Then we had to tell the attendant exactly what items we wanted, which seemed pretty stingy. The selection of continental breakfast items was quite limited, and there was not even a toaster to toast our bagels. Overall, though, we had an enjoyable stay.

We were scheduled for a three night stay but left after one very noisy night. We stayed in room 123. All went well until about 1:30 A.M. We were awaken by people in room 122 who were talking and laughing very loud. Our sliding glass door to the balcony was left open to let the air in while we slept. The people in room 122 had visitors that continued the loud talking and laughing and appeared to be smoking something so stong smelling we had to close the sliding door. We got dressed and went to the lobby to request some assistance. No one was on duty. We returned to our room but the noise from room 122 was still going on (about 2:15 a.m.). We went to the lobby and still no one was on duty. We went outside and walked along the walkway overlooking the water. We returned by walking through the lobby and still no one was on duty. The people from room 122 had now joined others near the jacuzzis and were very loud. The noise stopped about 3:00 a.m. We packed and left the hotel about 5:00 a.m. Thankfully we were able to find a clerk to check us out. If you want peace of mind go someplace else. This was our worst nightmare come true.

The Tamarack Beach Resort has a very nice atmosphere and a cozy feel. It has a great view of the beach, which is only across the street. The rooms are very pleasant, with a homey feel to them. Also has a great pool, spas, BBQs, rec room, and gym. It is also in a great location, close to good restaurants and shops. I go to the Tamarack Beach Resort and I would love to live in this place.

We stayed at the Tamarack for four nights in July. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and they do offer nice touches such as free morning papers, pool toys, and planned activities. The outdoor public areas and pool are attractive and very clean. A nice courtyard with patio furniture and grills is available for guest use. The location is convenient to Carlsbad Village and the beach, but be aware that Carlsbad Blvd. is a very busy 4-lane street. If you have an ocean view room, you won't necessarily be able to hear the surf over the traffic, and that's something of a disappointment. There is only one hotel actually on the beach in Carlsbad, though.

The breakfast is simple (large muffins, bagles, and croissants that look like they're from Sam's, yogurt, fruit, cereal, coffee, juice, and milk) but it is in fact free for those staying in hotel rooms. As an earlier review indicated, there is a price list posted on the table, but there is (now) also a sign that indicates that the breakfast is free for the listed (hotel, not condo) room numbers. You simply give your room number to the attendant; nothing is billed.

On the other hand, I agree that "tired" is a good adjective for the room decor. Our room was clean but the carpet and bathroom are especially showing their age, as is the recreation room. I have a sense that it has something to do with the property being majority time share with a limited number of hotel rooms. (No one so much as mentioned the words "time share" to us, btw, though there is a resale desk in the lobby). For a place that caters to families, the lack of laundry facilities for non-condo guests is an inconvenience. In another location the rooms would seem quite overpriced, but summer in Southern California is expensive.
