Reviewed 11 June 2012

Stayed here with my family, beautiful grounds and common areas, rooms were very clean however room decor pretty blah...Spa was not great, does not feel like a 5 star resort...Service was excellent. Will I come back? Nope because it did not feel ultra luxurious.

I don't want to appear negative about the hotel because the service and staff are excellent but....If you are looking for the sophistication of a Park Hyatt as found in most Park Hyatt hotels then this is not the place to stay.

Dear PC2 - Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your stay last month. As you may have already known, Park Hyatt recently acquired this property, adding us to their growing list of resorts. Traditionally, Park Hyatt hotels have been located in urban city centers with decor and amenities suited for these particular locations. As Park Hyatt’s first coastal resort in the United States, our Aviara property has the unique opportunity of combining luxury with the relaxed atmosphere of Southern California.

We hope you stay with us again in the near future, and look forward to that opportunity to serve you.

Warm Regards,
Park Hyatt Aviara Resort

I had a great experience staying at the Park Hyatt Aviara for a work conference. The rooms were big and clean, the service was great and I was really happy with the food. There were even places to jog, which is important to me.

The only down side was probably intended by my employer when the site was chosen, but it's not near anything else (ie. bars, theaters, etc.) so it's a true destination resort. When we wanted to do activities, we were usually bused out so they had to be organized in advance.

Room Tip: Ask where your room is facing. I was facing the entry driveway so I had to keep the curtains closed...

Overall a really great hotel...but if you look really closely you can tell it's somewhere between premium and ultra luxury. From its heritage as a Four Seasons, the Aviara does retain some its ultra luxury character; beautiful grounds, large well maintained and well decorated room, amazing beds, and awesome service. However, there are chinks in the armor, little things, that distort the illusion of perfect luxury. First, let's tackle the good. The people are great. I mentioned at the front desk that it was my wife's birthday. That evening a bottle Prosecco and chocolate strawberries appeared gratis. Nice! The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and very courteous. I pulled my old truck up and the valet rather than looking down his nose at me for driving such a vulgar car on the premise said cheerfully "I love these trucks" and hopped and in pulled away. The pools were clean and the spa was incredible (or so my wife tells me). The food was also very good and not completely unreasonable in price.

So what separates the great from the truly amazing are the little things. The weeds in the crack of the side walk for example or the decision to use lesser mass produced art work in the rooms or the more laid back and less formal conversations that the staff has with its guests. These don't really bother me, its almost like a game...that's Four Seasons, that's Hyatt. Then there are the things that just make people annoyed. Those include 1) the $25 per day hotel surcharge and 2) the $30 a day non-optional valet surcharge. Sure they did talk about them, but seems like baking that into the bill would go along way in not having people surprised (especially the hotel surcharge). Overall, this is a very very good hotel - I'm sure the best in the San Diego area, or at least in the top five, but seems to fall somewhere between premium and luxury. I would recommend, but it wasn't special enough to return on my own dime.

Room Tip: Apparently a local BMW dealer is offering free rentals there. I saw several 7 series around, don'...

Was last here about 5 years ago when it was a Four Seasons. Was a bit concerned after reading mixed reviews, but am happy to report that it was a great vacation! Some of the decor/furniture here and there appeared a bit worn, but did not bother us very much. We upgrade to a deluxe suite at check-in and it was worth it. Room is spacious and well kept. Service was polite and not intrusive, and hotel grounds/amenities still top notch! One big bonus is the game room, where there are free video games/pool table/etc for the kids to hang out. They did not want to leave!
Will not wait another 5 years to come back!

The bed was so comfortable I didn't want to ever leave. It was like sleeping on a cloud. The room was large and clean and it was an excellent retreat for the night. The staff was very friendly and helpful and all the facilities felt like it was a five diamond resort. I especially love that they have a separate "adult-only" pool and it has underwater music.

When I think of the Park Hyatt brand, the following words come to mind – contemporary, distinctive, and elegant. In the case of the Park Hyatt Aviara the only word that applies is elegant.

It is evident that this is a former Four Seasons Hotel. The décor is refined, and there is an heir of pretention among the staff. Unfortunately, the color scheme is more sophisticated than stylish, and the service is disingenuous and inattentive. Regarding the latter, we were placed on an interminable hold while waiting to speak with a front desk associate. On two occasions, we waited several minutes at the valet stand before finally asking – “Could you please give us our car keys?” The delay was not due to demand. In the first instance the two valet attendants were exchanging pleasantries. In the second instance, the attendants were clearly trying to answer the age-old question - "How many attendants does it take to park one car?"

The highlight of the hotel was the guest room. We were upgraded to a partial ocean view at the end of the hallway. The balcony coupled with ideal weather made for a quiet, relaxing afternoon. Inside the room, the exceptionally comfortable bed would rank in our top three. The room was spacious and included a sofa, desk, flat-screen TV, and DVD player. The bathroom was expansive. There was an enclosed water closet, glass shower, and sizeable bathtub. The two sinks expedited our morning routine.

It was a cool, spring day, so we only passed through the pool area. There is an adult-only area, and the ocean can be seen in the distance. It should be noted that the resort is several miles from the ocean, so if you are expecting a beach vacation, this would not be the place.

Finally, the additional fees only added to our aggravation. The only parking option is valet, and there is $30 daily fee. Add in the tips, and parking becomes the equivalent of a lunch. It would behoove of this hotel to adopt the “all tips already included” policy which some five-star hotels have implemented. It would also behoove of the attendants to attend to the guests. After all, there is a $30 price tag for parking. There is also a $25 resort fee, so the total fees are now approaching a dinner for two. We are not immune to paying these fees – see our review on the Grand Hyatt Kauai – but these surpassed the reasonable threshold.

In summary, there are hotels which can command $500 per night. This is not one of them.

Pros: Spacious guest room , magnificent bed, adult-only pool

Cons: Inattentive, disingenuous service; valet parking and resort fee equal dinner for two
