Reviewed 9 December 2013

This was our first stay at the La Costa Resort. I had visited her many times as a child, but this was a first to stay. It was decorated for the Holidays which was very nice. Although it was a very cold weekend the warmth of the lobby/restaurants and rooms was very welcoming. The staff in the restaurants were very wonderful. We will stay again

I recently stayed here while attending a business function at the resort. Overall i really enjoyed my time at he resort, and I found the service to be excellent, but I couldn't help feeling that the rooms could use a bit of updating. This was especially true of the bathroom in my room, which was charming, but did not look that clean. Also I found the bed quite average for this level of hotel.

Having said that, the resort is very nice. The quality of food was very good, the grounds are manicured, and the wi-fi worked very well. I would recommend this place especially if you are playing their excellent golf courses, but otherwise found it just a bit above average.

This place is great to visit year round but in the summer they have live bands playing music in the main courtyard area at sunset. Lots of beautiful pools (an adult one too- less noise) and restaurants serving gourmet meals that are very tasty. I love visiting La Costa Resort. You can also play golf there (I'm still learning).

Dear Lacaltex: So glad that you loved visiting us! Perhaps on your next visit you'll have time to try a golf lesson. We know that you'd love our head golf instructor, who's been named one of Golf Digest's "Top 40 Under 40" instructors. In the meantime, hope you're enjoying the game!

We usually stay at La Costa a few times a year to visit relatives nearby. The hotel is an oasis. Service is warm and friendly, the rooms are always clean, cheerful and extremely comfortable. Service is first class. We have only tried some of the restaurants, which are excellent. Fitness facilities, spa, pools, golf and tennis are also world class. Even though we llive in nearby Los Angeles, a visit to La Costa always feels like a real vacation. The staff is always helpful and accommodating; Hannah Carlson in the loyalty department is a jewel. We are picky travelers but we cannot recommend this resort too highly.

La Costa is our favorite local getaway. The facility is gorgeous and the staff is amazing. My kids love the pool area, the kids arcade and the golf course. I was incredibly impressed with the fitness classes offered - they are on the level of a high end gym. This is so unique for a hotel/resort. My next visit will be scheduled around these classes!

For a number of years, our family has celebrated Thanksgiving at Pelican Hill, renting a number of villas and cooking turkeys for the holiday. At least on two occasions, there were 47 of us (many siblings with kids). We were awed by the villas, the setting and the common areas. The swimming pools were the big draw for the kids. We also loved the Cove and hung out at the beach.

But Pelican got way too pricey. So we shopped around and found an old friend, La Costa near Carlsbad, now an Omni. There were only 27 of us this year, but the rooms we selected were close to one another and adjoined a large patio where all of us shared Thanksgiving together.

Rating: way beyond what we expected. The rooms were more than ample. No, they aren't 3000 sf villas, but the kitchens were well stocked with utensils. No, there were no fruit baskets on arrival, but the set-up of the tables, chairs, linens, china, silverware, heaters, and other items we needed was cost free and executed by professionals. Shawnee, the booking person assigned to us, was on top of it. She was attentive, imaginative, and determined to make this the first of many years we assemble at the Omni La Costa.

The main draw turned out to be the kids pool areas. Humble in comparison to the circular pools of Pelican, but more to the point: fun for the kids, even in November. Lifeguards everywhere. Safety is clearly a concern and it shows. Pelican lunches by the pool are served on trays. At La Costa, nothing quite that fancy. But to the kids, a smoothie is a smoothie.

And that leads to the question of price. A massive difference. I'll trade Donald Bren's Pelican view of the ocean from the villa for the smiles of our kids as we set off Estes rockets in the parking lot, or my nephew's laughter as we massacred the 17th hole of the fabulous La Costa Championship course - especially when you consider how much less the cost of this outing was as compared to prior stays at Pelican Hill.

Were we paying for cache or pretense at Pelican? I'm not sure, but I know value and that's what we got at La Costa. The shops look commercial, but there was a reason people patronized them: the ice cream, baked goods, and coffee were well worth the walk. Not at Pelican Hill. A walk to their shop from the villas requires a compass and time. The game room? Still haven't found it at Pelican Hill, but had to drag the kids away at La Costa. Kidtopia at La Costa is the spot for those under 8. The spa is beautiful at both, but compare prices.

There's more. But I'm sure you get it. Whether you travel en masse or alone, Omni La Costa is worth a long weekend or more.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms in the 6000 range are adjacent to fountained patios.

Great hotel! Great amenities! Awesome for kids! Make sure you have all your reservation details in writing - Hotel employees do not know room details and may advise you with wrong room details. You may be very surprised when you check in! a Villa is not really a Villa its just a regular room.

You're correct that we do offer a variety of Villa accommodations, some are two bedroom Villas with full kitchen and living and dining room, some are studios, etc. We provide email confirmations for our guests to clarify what has been reserved and are sorry that confusion occurred in your case.
