We checked in on the 25th and were told about their off street parking with a joking comment that "if you get a spot there don't move". If we didn't get a spot in their lot we were told to just find a 30 minute or 2 hour parking spot and to check our tires from time to time for a white chalk mark. In other words...continuous babysitting of our vehicle. We circled the streets for the next hour and a half trying to even find a 2 hour spot. No luck. What a frustrating experience. The staff was unhelpful and kept repeating the same guidance. "Just find a spot". 90 minutes and we're still not parked. After not being able to park and relax we checked out and left and went to Monterey instead. If they will not fix the parking...pass on this one. Should also mention the tiny and tired old rooms with windy, narrow staircases that you will have to pull your luggage up. No elevators and no help from the staff. You're on your own.

jlloyd54, General Manager at Pine Inn, responded to this reviewResponded 28 March 2017

Good Afternoon,

It is true. Parking is a big issue for the Pine Inn as well as for Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Our parking lot can only accommodate half of the needed spaces and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Having said that, the Pine Inn has been trying, unsuccessfully, for thirty years to build an underground garage. The city keeps turning us down even though the owner of the Pine Inn has agreed to pay for the whole project.

I encourage anyone who has stayed here or is planning on staying here to write to the mayor and express your discontent.

Lastly, we do have a bell person on duty all day to assist with luggage.

Thank you

John Lloyd
General Manager

We were very much looking forward to staying at the Pine Inn, but the rooms were very disappointing - very small and very tired (virtually no enamel left in bath etc.). Staff unhelpful and rude. The Pine Inn oversold and under delivered. Avoid, somewhere a nice as Carmel must have much better options.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere, the rooms we had were very tired

This quaint hotel is the perfect Get Away. It is close to the water and right down town for walking to shops. It does not have an elevator, so pack light to carry upstairs.
The Pine Inn has all the amenities you need. I highly recommend.

We spent New Year's weekend at the Pine Inn. We had a lovely room and were treated to a festive and joyful experience. All the staff were friendly and in good holiday spirits. The Inn was very festive for the holidays. The bed was very comfortable and the temperature inthe room was perfect.

We traveled to Carmel during the week between Christmas and New Year. This is a VERY busy week in Carmel, so our experience may not be typical of weekday stays at the Pine Inn.

The Good:
Location. The walk to the beach is a pleasant, downhill 5-10 minute walk. (And quite UPHILL on the way back!) There a MANY, MANY shops, restaurants and galleries within a 5 minute walk. Access to Hwy 1 is about a 5 min drive. Yes, you can "see" the ocean, but even more cool is that you can hear it at night.
Decorations for the Holidays were lovely. The fireplaces and the tree were beautiful.
Staff- most of the staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Breakfast is served in the connecting restaurant. It is complementary and done fairly well. There is a bakery connected to the restaurant that serves sandwiches, coffee, tea and pastries. The gentleman who works in there is very nice.

The "meh."-
Parking. To the hotel's credit, they advertise that parking is limited on their website. It is REALLY limited. If you don't get a spot by late morning, you'll be parking on the street. If you plan on just staying in Carmel and walk every where, this isn't a problem. If you go out for dinner or a drive down the coast... you're on the street. Most parking on the street is limited to two hours until 7 PM. There is unrestricted parking about a block west of the hotel that you can move into after the throngs have left downtown.
Rooms- This is an OLD hotel- over 100 yrs old. It has been brought up to mostly modern standards, but, even those are showing wear. We stay in historic hotels frequently, so we're used to the "character" many of these buildings demonstrate (uneven floors, doors with huge gaps underneath, radiator heat, etc.) This one has a LOT of "character." There is no way to make hot water in the room - no coffee maker or microwave. (This is important to me... maybe not so much to others). Ice must be called for and delivered. (It is always delivered with a smile). Finally, you'll read a number of reviews that refer to street noise. Yes, this is an issue. The hotel is in a very busy portion of downtown and there are a lot of cars and people. Garbage trucks roll down the street every morning around 7 am. It can be and is pretty noisy.

Overall, we had a very nice experience. Can I recommend the hotel to you, yes, but please understand what this hotel is and isn't.
