Fine Motel, historic feel, great location.

BUT motel rooms are over the lovely il Fornaio restaurant and our room #19 was right next to chimney from the restaurants' mesquite BBQ/oven... While it can be a great smell, trying to sleep with thick BBQ smoke/aroma permeating our room was anything but pleasant! Cough, cough....

We got through the 1st night and asked to be moved in the morning. The manager apologized and sadly was fully aware of the problem....which begs the question why would they even rent this room??? She even stated that she was going to have to complain to the restaurant yet again. She offered to move us into a "suite" which turned out to be a room with access only from a separate entrance very far to the rear of the hotel up a long flight of narrow steps - not ideal. Plus it faced the same smoky courtyard and smelled (slightly less) of pungent mesquite! No thanks. We eventually were moved to an acceptable room later in the day.

Oh yeah - the motel does not have AC and open windows are the only source of air. And...FYI there are no elevators in this 3 or 4 story property either.

The manager offered to give us a 50% discount for the 1st night (of 2) to compensate us for our smoked out lungs and clothes that still reek, but then when she found out that we reserved our rooms via "Booking.com" she withdrew the discount offer....!? I tried to question why she couldn't still just credit my Visa and then work out the balance with Booking.com, but she just couldn't even begin to consider that as an option? Huh?

Carmel is full of wonderful hotel alternatives where I would hope that they show more respect for the paying customer, even if the customer pays through a well known intermediary.

I will not be returning to the Pine Inn.

Good Morning,

I am truly sorry that your stay was less than desirable.

With regard to having no elevators, the Pine Inn is a two-story property, the 1st hotel built in Carmel, circa 1889. Although we have no elevators there is a bell person on duty 24/7 to assist with luggage.

I also apologize for the confusion with Booking.com. Simply giving a credit card credit to the guest when working through Booking.com is difficult at best. They prefer that the guest contact them directly.

Again, I apologize for the smoke issues from the restaurant.

we found the pine in by accident and fell in love with it, we were coincidentally looking for a place for the following two nights, we walked in, spoke with donna, she showed me a typical room, loved it, booked it (reasonably priced) came back the next day, checked in and found out how really wonderful the whole place was-----from the room, the restaurant, the bar (happy hour) the breakfasts, (comp on weekdays) , the coffee gazebo, the courtyard and all the wonderful shops and restaurants in the area. we dont know when we will be back but this is where we will be staying again. also free parking!!!

A very nice inn, with a beautiful lobby, and a very nice dinning room. The inn is centrally located in Carmel( an upscale shopping Mecca). The only real negatives are parking and the lack of ease of lugging your bags. To be fair they will assist upon being asked.

Room Tip: Be extra dilligent in searching for the inn.

Quite simply every time I go to Carmel I stay at the Pine inn... The original hotel was built in the late 1800s I guess... but needless to say,it has been updated regularly since then. The lobby is a classic combination of French antiquity and A men's club at the turn-of-the-Last century. Many different types of rooms. European feel throughout.Reasonably priced compared to so many in tourist towns.free parking on a first come first served basis on a back lot behind the hotel. there is no elevator so be aware. Also the hotel is the location for one of the nicer Italian restaurants in town, El Fornio... they include free breakfast buffet at the restaurant every morning and it's consistent, and good. On this last stay they were doing a special where I received two $20 coupons per night to be used at El Fornio... such a good deal. And there is also a winetasting room connected to the hotel, Carmel Road wines. Coupons for the wine tasting we're also included. Spent two afternoons chatting with the lovely ladies at the wine room... you will enjoy this hotel, it is a short walk down to Carmel beach and in every direction to the great art galleries that are everywhere along with so many wonderful restaurants. One of my favorite galleries that has been there for years, "new Masters Gallery "it's on Dolores Street on the south side of ocean. You'll enjoy it. Say hi to Bill the owner if you go by.Great guy great gallery

The Pine Inn was definitely quaint and quirky. My British friends would call it twee. The decor in our suite varied from traditionally framed paintings to Bali art. The bedroom itself was very traditional. The sitting room felt like a gazebo, with the ceiling open to the covered hallway surrounding our room. While an effort to create a unique setting was clearly made, it lacked the basics of a good hotel room: privacy and quiet.

My biggest complaint about the room was that lack of privacy. The walls and windows were paper thin. We were awakened before 7 a.m., by the street sweeper. (Friends in an interior room with no walls over the street were also awakened this way!) We heard all conversations of our neighbors in the room next door. Being awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of your neighbor urinating is not pleasant and, frankly, unacceptable! (Honeymooners beware... your every move will be heard by others...)

While breakfast was included with our room, it wasn't served until 8 a.m., which I consider late on a weekday. Before that, you could get breakfast, in the same restaurant, but you had to pay for it. The waitstaff was gruff.

When you check in, there is a sign that explains that the building is not earthquake-proof. I would add that the labyrinth of hallways in the buildings (The Inn consists of many properties in the neighborhood, some of which are connected.) would be a fire hazard.

I cannot recommend this Inn and will not be returning.

Good Morning,

I sincerely apologize for the street noise, however the Pine Inn is an historical hotel in the middle of Carmel-by-the-Sea and there are times when noise from the surrounding streets can be heard.

With regard to the possibility of a fire hazard, the Pine Inn consists of three separate buildings. Each building has numerous exit routes in addition to having fire sprinklers and fire hoses. The Pine Inn just recently passed the yearly fire inspection with flying colors.
