We've been to this charming hotel, well situated to town and the public beach, twice before and were happy to return for a two day get-away. It's better than ever. When the accomodations and management are already so good, it is the new small touches that register, e.g. a welcoming non-alcoholic sparkling drink while you check in; a small departing gift when we checked out. Our charming room was just as expected with large windows, nice breeze, deluxe linens including sparkling white seemingly-new towels, nice (not raggedy) waffle cotton robes, fresh fruit in the room, cookies at turn down, etc. We had reserved the Bed & Breakfast Package and breakfast was delicious, elegantly served and presented. We were raving over the freshly baked banana nut bread, the tasty fresh fruit and fresh squeezed oj - the sweetest and least-acidic I've had. Even the coffee was excellent, as though just pressed for us. Small touches like sea salt and home-made preserves made the meal very special and a wonderful, relaxed way to start the day. We will continue to return to beautiful Carmel regularly and look forward to many more memorable visits to L'Auberge Carmel.

I recently stayed in one of the most expensive rooms at the hotel. The price was $100 per night less than the Lodge at Pebble Beach or Spanish Bay. Our room was not up to par. Besides showing it age with a very dark decor, there were multiple maintenance problems. The front desk offered an immediate, significant price reduction the next day which I gladly accepted. However, there is attention to detail missing. For example, the box spring did not have a fabric skirt. So the the mattress with a beautiful spread was set in a frame, but you could see a plain box spring on the edge, hardly elegant. The restaurant was quite nice, but I found the wine list overpriced which bothers me in California, especially given Monterey is part of a wine country environment. The staff is extremely polite and professional. I think the furniture in the lounge and rooms is probably ready for an update.

The hotel has a pleasant, very friendly staff. Our room unfortunately was in poor maintenance condition and unattractive for over $600 per night. The shower did not drain, the television did not work properly (discovered at 10pm even after new remote batteries were exchanged, one chair had a stain in the middle (you would not want to sit there) and you will discover the bed mattress sits on an exposed box spring with no skirt. After the stain on the chair we didn't feel the chocolate brown carpet was clean.
The dining room is lovely, the courtyard quite nice. upon checkout we were given a discount.

A delightful little hotel to spend a romantic weekend. The service is perfect. The rooms are small but more than adequate for that romantic weekend away. Carmel best location on a quiet corner with a very charming center courtyard.

Room Tip: Ask for room 12 or 14

L'Auberge Carmel is simply the finest hotel - everything is fabulous. We were greeted with a warm smile; refreshing drink....valet parking....cold champagne awaited in our room. The courtyard setting is so inviting - beautiful flowers adorning window; comfortable chairs to set an relax, read a book. The room interiors are tastefully decorated...with all the amenities.

I thought long and hard before writing this review. I planned for this our last night in the USA to be the highlight, and in many ways it was. The welcome was excellent, the service, valet parking and later in the restaurant was first class. The room was clean and very comfortable. On the whole a very relaxing experience in a very nice town. But, and there has to be abut coming, the room was quite small. The bathroom had a perfectly adequate shower but no bath. In short the "wow" factor was completely absent. The complementary water was ok, but in similar hotels in the UK we had been given complementary sherry, whisky or gin. Dinner on the other hand from the tasting menu was first class. Would I eat there again? Yes. Would I stay there again? Probably not!

Room Tip: Eat here, but stay elsewhere

Dear paul611,

Thank you very much for staying with us at L'Auberge Carmel. Please accept my sincere apologies that your stay with us was not up to your standards. Being a former 1929 apartment, we have tried everything in our power to modernize the rooms yet keep the charm of the history behind L'Auberge. It is unfortunate that the "wow" factor was absent in your opinion. We do take all of our guests comments to heart and will use this to further our staff training. Again thank you for staying with us at L'Auberge Carmel and I hope that you will give us another chance to "wow" you.

Upon arriving at 9:00pm after a 7 hour flight delay, we were tired and hungry. We were greeted with smiles, warmth, comfort and helping hands. Though the kitchen was closed, the chef reopened and served us a delicious meal with wonderful wine. As they seated us in front of a fireplace, we sensed this place was special. We generally don't stay at small, boutique style hotels and were pleasantly surprised at the comfort and amenities L'Auberge Carmel offered. The whole hotel is very European in style and decor and its Old World charm is very appealing. The included continental breakfast was really a superb three-course meal with delicious breads and croissants. The location in the heart of town is perfect. The personal service and friendliness of the staff made us want to return. This is truly a jewel in a gem of a city!
