Highly recommended charming Carmel Inn

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Apr 2017
Wonderful 2 night stay at Vagabond's Inn, short walk from centre of Carmel. Well equipped room, very comfortable double bed, TV incl. Netflix, working gas fireplace. Extra single bed in some rooms if travelling with kids. Charming hosts delighted to recommend restaurants and excursions, plus complementary afternoon wine + cheese and great conversation in central courtyard/fire pit. Breakfast pre-ordered and delivered to room. Complementary parking lot next to Inn. Highly recommended.

On a recent road trip, we decided to stay overnight in Carmel & booked Vagabond House Inn, a small hotel in a out-of-the-way location, yet only two blocks to the center of town. Parking was good. Room was clean and comfortable & decorated nicely. I would stay there again. There were just a few small incidences: 1) When we arrived it was nearly 7pm. The host who checked us in was friendly but was anxious to leave for the night. (we were the only guests at the inn that evening), so waiting for us to arrive was probably a bit later than expected. He DID however, offer us a discounted rate, which was very much appreciated. We carried our own luggage up the stairs and to our room. 2) When I booked the room, I was NOT told that there was a small "remodel" in progress across from our room. The next morning we were the only guests there except for a few construction workers outside our window. They were quiet & friendly, however, I believe we should have been notified during the telephone reservation process that construction was in progress during our stay. 3) Room Service was a bit funny - we placed our order the night before as requested by the front desk. The next morning around 8:30 am the room service waitress had a difficult time finding a place to put our food. It was a scramble to find a desk or table top large enough to accommodate our order. Awkward. 4) I have a suggestion for the Inn Keeper: Perhaps you can give your guests a secret code to access the coffee area that is adjacent to the lobby. That way guests can get coffee prior to the front desk opening at 8AM. That would have been better than perusing the town of Carmel @ 6 AM looking for a Coffee house. Yes, I would stay there again, if they will have us :-)

    Reviewed 26 December 2016

My husband and I have stayed at the Vagabond's House every December, for an average of 6 straight nights, for 20+ years. Over the last few years the Inn has had many lovely upgrades; the rooms have been updated to a more contemporary vibe. The room prices have gone up in keeping with the upgrades. Unfortunately along with the shiny new bathroom faucets comes a shiny new holier-than-thou attitude among the front office staff. The current manager, Thomas, has a sense of entitlement usually reserved for Hollywood A-listers, but we overlooked it when he took over for the previous manager because we loved the Inn. Since we had been such longstanding guests, we enjoyed a slight discount on our room. A few years into his run, we were told Thomas would no longer offer us a 'loyalty' discount during the holiday season but we could take advantage of said discount if we came at another time of year. I should mention that there were vacancies during our stay that year. This year, because of unforeseen circumstances, we needed to shorten our stay to 4 nights. I called in October to change the December dates (we made this year's reservation when we checked out last year). When I called I was told that there is a new 5 night minimum stay policy during the holidays and if we dropped our stay to 4 nights we would have to find other accommodations. Last year we were pretty fed up over the lack of hospitality at the Inn but decided to give it one more try. This was the last straw. We will not be staying here again. While the grounds are charming, the staff are not. There are an abundance of places in Carmel that offer both.

Stayed in room #11 with gas fireplace this October. Room was very stylish and comfortable with great extra features - Netflix and heated bathroom floors were especially appreciated. Staff was extremely helpful, recommending restaurants, shopping, and even booking discount tickets to the aquarium. Daily wine and cheese happy hour was another nice touch. Location is great, easy walking distance to everything in town. On-site massages were also great. We took a look at all the other hotels we considered while walking around town, and we definitely liked ours the best - particularly for the price range. Can't recommend this hotel enough. Would absolutely stay there again.

Room tip: Room #11 highly recommended - up one flight of stairs

Vagabond's House is heavenly and the perfect landing spot for a short weekend trip or a long retreat. The staff is helpful, welcoming, and deeply knowledgeable. The rooms have great character and all the right fixings (the bathtubs! the bed!) -- I haven't felt so relaxed in years. And the location can't be beat. Afternoon wine and morning breakfasts in bed added to the charm, along with the outdoor fireplace to gather. My long weekend there was an absolute dream, and I can't wait to go back.

Room tip: The renovated rooms (abt 1/2 of the rooms) have bigger tubs & a more modern feel

Highly recommend! If you want charm (reminded us of an English cottage), high standard of furnishings, exceptionally clean and a great location then book it! Breakfast is delivered to your room and the croissants are a must. Complimentary cheese and wine each evening is a very nice touch and it was fun to sit around the fire pit and meet other guests. Friendly, helpful staff and very tastefully decorated throughout. Many restaurants in easy walking distance and a good size carpark too.
